We are experiencing a growing number of phone calls or emails after 2 PM from parents telling us of a change in a student's dismissal plans on that day. With the growing number of incidents on each day, it becomes more difficult to make sure that we are getting the messages to your child in a timely manner and ensuring that your child understands the change. For our younger students an unexpected change causes confusion and at times, anxiety. What is the best way to handle dismissal changes? Sending a note in to your child's teacher in the morning, which then gets sent to the office, means that the teacher and our office staff knows in the morning. We then create a list of changes and inform the bus supervision staff so that they know of any bus changes. It also means that we have a record of all changes in case a child does not end up where you expect them to be.

Principal's Message

Principal's Message: End of Day Dismissal Changes As student/family schedules change there is often aneed to let the teacher and office know that your child'sdismissal plans have changed. We are experiencing agrowing number of phone calls or emails after 2 PMfrom parents telling us of a change in a student'sdismissal plans on that day. With the growing numberof incidents on each day, it becomes more difficult tomake sure that we are getting the messages to yourchild in a timely manner and ensuring that your childunderstands the change. For our younger students anunexpected change causes confusion and at times, anxiety. What is the best way to handle dismissal changes?Sending a note in to your child's teacher in themorning, which then gets sent to the office, means thatthe teacher and our office staff knows in the morning. We then create a list of changes and inform the bussupervision staff so that they know of any bus changes. It also means that we have a record of all changes incase a child does not end up where you expect them tobe.

If an occasional occurrence happens where you needto make the changes during the school day, we askthat you notify us prior to 2 PM so that we can ensureall people who need to know of the change get thatnotification. It is best to send a note in the morning butif you need to make a change during the day, it is bestto send an email to the teacher as well as to the officeemail which is: [email protected]. Sending it onlyto the teacher is a problem when that teacher is out.We also ask that any play dates be arranged prior tothe day of the play date. As always, if you have any questions, concerns orideas to share please contact me atkaren.raymond@sau24 or 428-3476.

Environmental Camp

Henniker 7th grade students spent four days at Environmental Camp at the SargentCenter Nature's Classroom in Hancock, NH, during the week of October 11. Throughout the trip, students learned about team building, conflict resolution, peerleadership, compassion, and perseverance all while being citizenscientists. Activities included assembling a catamaran from pine poles, rope, andtwo canoes; a high ropes course; conducting water surveys, and exploring the nightsky. During the trip, the students also learned independence as for many of them itwas their first time away from home. The many facets of environmental science, communication, and collaboration that students learned while at EnvironmentalCamp will be referenced all year back in their classrooms at HCS.

Students collected data on water temperature and pH as well as identifiedvarious macroinvertebrates. One great find was a dobsonfly which then proceeded

to eat a mayfly nymph and dragonfly nymph. After analyzing the data collected, students concluded that the wetlands ecosystem at Sargent Center was healthy.

Evelynn and Emma help their peers on thehigh ropes course. The girls are pulling a ropethat causes wooden beams that are 35 feet offthe ground to come closer together so theperson above them can move across.

1st Grade Pumpkin Picking

With fall, comes pumpkins! First Graders have been learning about the life cycle ofa pumpkin. As one of our activities to help teach about pumpkins, we go to apumpkin patch. We have a great resource right in our own town, the Connor

Pumpkin patch on Old Concord Road. For the past few years, Patrick Connor hasgenerously allowed the children to pick pumpkins from his field at a minimal cost.

This year we were able to conduct a pumpkin experiment when we got back to ourclassrooms. This included weighing, and measuring the circumference and height of

the pumpkin. Oh, we also found out that pumpkins float!

2nd Graders Hunt Bugs with iPads
