Newsletter 5, Term 1, 2020 Thursday 27th February

Dear Families,

Welcome to the newsletter for Week 5. This week, with our Ash Wednesday celebration, we began the session of Lent, the 40 days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving that characterise the lead up to the joyful mystery of the Easter season.

During the next few weeks we are encouraged by the Church to examine our lives for those areas that limit us as people of hope and service. We ask God’s help in this discernment through prayer, we practise giving something up in our fasting to help with discipline in our lives, and we actively give to others in service and respect of their inherent dignity.

We will be encouraging our children during our Religious Education units at this time to examine their lives in an age appropriate way, with an emphasis on what it looks, sounds and feels like to be better people, people who are hope filled and of

service to those around them in a life giving way. I pray that you, as parents, may also find the time and space in your busy lives for some work around these themes for yourselves and your family.

GRADUATION COMMITTEE Graduation for our Grade 6 children may seem like it is still a good way off, but these things have a habit of being here before we know it. With this fact in mind, there are a number of people anxious to make a start on the planning for this event. If you would like to be part of the working party around this, please email me with your name and the name of your child by Friday 6th March. Once I have these expressions of interest, we will then convene an initial meeting on Tuesday 10th March at 7pm.

SCHOOL CROSSING AND TRAFFIC SAFETY This issue continues to be of concern. All members of our community need to be responsible for using the designated crossings on Miller Street and Nicholson Street and to obey instructions of the Crossing Supervisors. Parents and children continue to cross these roads at points other than the crossings putting people unnecessarily at risk.

I am aware that our regular Miller Street Supervisor, Joe, has taken leave to have some surgery and that this crossing has not been supervised until Mrs Oxley was drafted to help the last two mornings. I have contacted Moreland Council and asked that this be attended to as a priority for our children’s safety.

I again remind parents who are dropping off and picking up that you are not to park either side of the crossing in the No Standing areas, to ensure visibility, nor to park in the staff carpark or driveway so that you are not backing out into pedestrian traffic.

Gracious God today begins a period of inner

reflection and examination. The days stretch

before me and invite me inward to that silent,

holy space that holds your Spirit. This

special time beckons me to see my life

through Christ's eyes and the truth and

reality of your love incarnate.

Give me the grace to enter the space of

these days with anticipation of our meeting.

And, when I open my soul to your presence,

let your loving kindness flow over me and

seep into the pockets of my heart.

I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen.

2020 SCHOOL PHOTO DAY – 6th MARCH Parents, please refer the flyer attached to this newsletter for details. All parents are required to dress their children in their full Summer Uniform on Photo Day, Friday 6th March, even if Friday is your child's Sports/PE lesson Day.

A separate photo order form for student portraits and class photos has been sent home with every student today. On-line ordering is simple and easy and does not involve returning forms back to the school.

Parents who wish to pay by cash will need to complete and return the order form back to their child's classroom teacher by the 5th March.

If you have 2 or more children attending OLHC School and wish for your children to have an additional Sibling Photograph taken together on our photo day, you can also order on-line, up to the 5th March 2020. Cash orders will need to be completed by contacting our School Office to obtain a separate Sibling Photo Order Form.

Please do not call the School Office to order photos on Photo Day. The deadline for forms to be handed in is Thursday, 5th March.

All students will have their photograph taken for our records and ID regardless of whether parents place an order or not.

Thank you for your assistance. Cathy Windsor (Administration Officer)

CELEBRATING STUDENT ART Year Six students have been exploring the tricky concept of screen printing. See the Art Check Out later in the newsletter for an example of the work completed.

WORKING BEE SATURDAY 14th MARCH Our first Working Bee for the year has now been scheduled for Saturday 14th March. More details will be sent out soon but the big job to be completed is making safe the path from the church to the school yard so that we can open the gate near the church as foreshadowed in last week’s newsletter.

PARENT HELPER WORKSHOP One of the many ways OLHC families support our students and teachers is by offering their time to be Parent Helpers in the classroom.

On Wednesday 18th March at 9.00 am we will be conducting a Parent Helper Workshop in the staff room. The workshop will take about 45 minutes to complete. The workshop will go through what being a parent helper involves, how you can best support the students and the teacher and explain the code of conduct expectations. A note will be sent home this week for you to indicate if you will be attending the workshop.

The following need to be in order before you can commence working in the classroom:

• A valid Working with Children’s Check (the school office will need a copy of this)

• Completion of a Parent Helper Workshop (either in 2020 or in previous years at the school)

• A signed Code of Conduct form

We look forward to seeing you there! Ashlea and Sylvia (Learning and Teaching Leaders)

RESOLVING ISSUES AS THEY ARISE From time to time issues will arise that necessitate communication between home and school. In the first instance these are best addressed between the parent and the class teacher, either in a face to face meeting, over the phone or via email. Kathryn Quinn, as Assistant Principal and Wellbeing Leader, and I are also available to speak with parents as needed. This week it was my pleasure to be involved in a few Pupil Support Group meetings and to witness the developing relationship between teachers and parents as we work in partnership for the best interests of the children.

CSEF (CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND) Parents who have a current Centrelink Healthcare card may be eligible for a fee discount of $125 per primary school student. Please refer the following link or contact our School Office. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/about/programs/health/csefflyer.pdf

CONGRATULATIONS ANNA LYNCH Anna Lynch has provided extracurricular music lessons at OLHC for many years now. What some in our community may not know is that Anna is a world class champion billiards player. Anna was recently nominated as one of only four finalists for the VicSport Governor's Award for Victorian Female Athlete of the Year. Anna claimed her 16th Victorian Billiards title in 2019 and continued her form at an Australian level with a national Billiards Championship. She reached the pinnacle though with a World Women’s Billiards Championship, becoming just the sixth Australian to win the title in an incredible year. A role model for rising Billiards players, Anna also assists in coaching and supporting the sports community throughout Victoria. Congratulations, Anna, from all of the OLHC community on this spectacular and well-deserved honour.

2020 PARENT REPRESENTATIVES Each year the Parent Association calls for volunteers to be Parent Representatives. The role of Parent Representative is to act as a ‘liaison’ for their individual classes and to attend Parent Association meetings (if possible) so that important Parent Association and School updates can be shared with the other class parents. The roles also help promote connectedness between the classroom families which has long lasting benefits for the school community.

Thank you and congratulations to the following parents for volunteering for this role:
