Dear Parish Family, This fourth Sunday of Advent gives us an overview of the Christmas story, told from the point of view of St. Jo-

seph, dependable and faithful St. Joseph, Mary’s devoted betrothed. St. Joseph’s role in the Nativity was filled with stress. His bride to be returned to her small town, pregnant, after

a three-month trip. This was a severe scandal, punishable by death. There was naturally gossip to deal with, and his thought that he should divorce her quietly, rather than punish her publicly. As we know, God was with St. Joseph and spoke clearly to him through an angel in a dream, and he received peace, knowing that he was an active part of God’s plan for salvation.

Seizing the opportunity to extract his bride and himself from the chatter of their small town, St. Joseph followed the decree of Caesar to return to the town of his birth to pay taxes.

On a donkey they went, carrying whatever food and supplies the little beast could bear, through the unpaved roads, crowded with other people doing the same thing. Of course, the time came for Mary to give birth to Jesus. St. Joseph frantically looked for a place to stay, finding inn after inn full, and finally found a sympathetic innkeeper who let them stay in his stable. The stable! It was like a garage, but full of cows and sheep. But that’s all the innkeeper had, and St. Joseph was grateful for it. After the birth, Mary laid Jesus in a manger – the trough where the animals ate. What a scene for this honest, hardworking man to welcome the Son he was entrusted, by God, to raise.

Through all his trials, God gave St. Joseph peace, perfect peace, that night in the stable, far from home, with his newborn Son sleeping in a feeding trough.

And we can have peace, too, if we turn toward God and listen for the voice of His angels. We can look around our chaotic world and see Him sleeping peacefully amidst the noise. We can take comfort in His word and believe.

Have a blessed, peaceful Christmas. God bless you always, and please pray for me.

Love, Fr. Bryan _________________________________________________________________

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY OFFICE CLOSURE The OLC Church rectory will be closed on

Tuesday, December 24th and Wednesday, De-cember 25th in observance of the Christmas hol-iday. The office will re-open on Thursday, Decem-ber 26th. We wish you a joyous and blessed Christmas.

THANK YOU, DECORATING VOLUNTEERS! Our church is beautifully decorated

for the holidays because of some won-derful volunteers! A number of parish-ioners came to church on Saturday, December 21st, to decorate the church for Christmas. They did a marvelous job. Thank you so very much for helping.

OPLATEK ~ CHRISTMAS WAFERS The tradition of Oplatek, or

Christmas Wafers, originated in Poland during Early Christian times. The entire family gathers with the Oplatek and shares it with one another. The tradition is one that is easy, fun, and deeply meaningful to introduce to the family anytime during the Christmas season. If you would like to obtain some Oplatek, it is available at the Rectory.

WEEKLY OFFERING Collection and mass at-

tendance information for the weekend of December 14/15 is unavailable due to the early bulletin publication date.

As always, thank you for living your financial commit-ment to our parish. We appre-ciate your generosity.

CHRISTMAS GIFT APPEAL Our annual Christmas Gift Appeal focuses on capi-

tal improvements. In years past, we’ve raised money to renovate our Church Hall, and that project will begin in the near future. This year, on unanimous recommen-dation of the Finance Council -- supported by Ben Rauch’s thoughtful input – Fr. Bryan designated a new sound system as the object of the 2019 Christmas Gift.

The case for a new sound system is strong. For example, there are no speakers in the rear of the church or the vestibule; the pulpit and altar micro-phones aren’t connected to the outdated and defective mixer and can’t be adjust-ed; the celebrant’s wireless mic constantly crackles and “drops out” during homi-lies. These are just three examples of the issues. In short, the present sound system is well past its useful life and no longer serves the needs of our parish and our liturgies.

The goal for this year’s Christmas Gift is to raise $75,000. This goal is realistically achievable if each family or individual parishioner makes a Christmas Gift of $350.

As always, this number is not a floor or a ceiling. Your Christmas Gift to OLC depends on what your conscience dictates and your means allow. We trust your 2019 Christmas Gift will be as generous as possi-ble.

Yours in faith, Parish Finance Council
