convenientinsomeways,wasthroughSamaria.Jesus’followerswenttothenearbyvillageofSychartoprocurefoodwhileHesattiredandthirstybywhatiscalledJacob’sWell.Itwasaboutnoon,thehottestpartoftheday,andaSamaritanwomancametothewelltodrawwater.JesusbreaksthreeJewishcustomsinHisexchangewiththewoman.First,Hespoketoawoman,somethingforbiddentomenwithstrangewomen;second,shewasaSamaritanwoman,agroupwithwhomJewsdidnotnormallymix;third,HeaskedhertogiveHimacupofwater,whichwouldhavemadeHimceremoni‐allyuncleanfromusinghercuporjar.Thewomanwasrightfullyshocked.However,JesustoldherthatHecouldgiveher“livingwater.”Atthattimesomespringwaterwascarbonatedanditseemed“alive”asitbub‐bledupfromtheground,soitwascalled“livingwater.”JesusmeantthatthewaterHeofferedwasaliveinadifferentwaybecauseitcouldbothgivelifeandquenchspiritualthirst.Althoughthewholesituationisamazingtothewoman,sheisparticular‐lystruckbyhowmuchJesusknowsabouther.ShereportstoherfellowSamaritans“HetoldmeeverythingIeverdid.”Thatisnotwhatshefoundsosurprisingthough.Whattrulyastonishedherwasthatinspiteofthatknowledge,Jesusstilllovedher.Jesuslovesusaswell,despiteourmanyshortcomingsandsins.Formorere lectionsandinformationonStewardshippleasevisithttp:/www.catholicsteward.com.
