Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/ Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,

These are some of my favorite readings. In the first reading, over and over again we are invited to come and experience the great love God has for us. There is no cost to receive God’s love. He gives it to all freely and without limits. There may be times when we do not feel the full affects of God’s love because a wall has been erected between us, not by God, but by us and our sins. God always loves us, no matter what.

We see this in St. Paul eternal question, “What can separate us from the love of Christ?” Romans 8:35. He goes into a litany of problems and events that could happen, but nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. This is how we can cope with the numerous events and situations that we experience every day.

In the Gospel we have a story of Jesus and His Father showing us this love in the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Jesus saw the needs of the people who had followed him. He asked his Father by looking up to heaven and blessed the loaves and fishes. The people on that day experienced the great love that Jesus and the Father have for us their people. Let us be grateful for their love and let it flow through us to others.

Estas son algunas de mis lecturas favoritas. En la primera lectura, una y otra vez se nos invita a venir y experimentar el gran amor que Dios tiene para nosotros. No hay costo alguno para reci-bir el amor de Dios. Él la da a todos abundantemente y sin límites. Puede haber momentos en los que no sentimos plenamente los efectos del amor de Dios, porque un muro se ha levantado entre nosotros, no por Dios, sino por nosotros y nuestros pecados. Dios siempre nos ama, no importa qué.

Esto lo vemos en la eterna pregunta de San Pablo: “¿Qué nos puede separar del amor de Cristo?” Romanos 8:35. Se mete en una letanía de prob-lemas y eventos que podrían suceder, pero nada nos puede separar del amor de Cristo. Se trata de cómo podemos hacer frente a los numerosos eventos y situaciones que experimentamos todos los días.

En el Evangelio tenemos una historia de Jesús y su Padre que nos muestra este amor en el milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces. Jesús, al ver las necesidades de las personas que lo habían seguido. Le pidió a su padre mirando al cielo y bendijo los panes y los peces. La gente en ese día experimentó el gran amor que Jesús y el Padre tienen para nosotros su pueblo. Demos gracias por su amor y dejamos que fluya a través de nosotros hacia los demás.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 3Blessed Mother Teresa, one of the great examples in our time of what it is to be Catholic and what it is to be a good steward, said “Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life. Night and day He is there for us. If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist; come back to that Adoration.” It is appropriate for us to remember that Eucharist means thanksgiving in Greek for it was Christ’s ideal sacrifice for each of us.

The verses in today’s Gospel are often titled “Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand.” As they are wont to do, scholars and histori-ans have examined this, which actually states, “Those who ate were five thousand men, not counting women and children.” Some have concluded that there may have been double that number or more. Nevertheless, the point is not the number fed; the reality is that Jesus is able to feed everyone who wishes to eat of the Bread of Life. The Lord has fed literally billions through the Eucharist. The Lord has resources beyond our wildest imaginations. We must nonetheless seek those resources through Him. Practicing stewardship recognizes that, and it leads us to lives of holiness, and to the “everlasting covenant” mentioned in today’s first reading. See more at: www.thecatholicsteward.com.

August 15 – Holy Day of ObligationThe Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15, is a holy day of obliga-tion this year. Our Masses on Friday, August 15 will be at 8:30am and 6pm in English and 7:30pm in Spanish. Plan on joining us to celebrate God’s grace in taking the Blessed Virgin Mary to heaven, body and soul.

FAM Food Collection – Eagle Scout ProjectFAM (Family Assistance Ministries) assists children, families and individuals in need with housing assistance, gas vouchers, utilities, etc. in addition to operating South County’s only food bank. Food donations are down in summer. Cole Grace, parishioner and Troop 737 Scout, is organizing a special food drive for FAM for his Eagle Scout project. He will be collecting food donations at Our Lady of Fatima after all the Masses on the weekend of August 9-10. He will also be doing collections at the Albertson’s by San Clemente High School on August 16, 23 and 30. Cole’s goal is to fill the FAM’s pantry during the lean summer months with as many much needed food staples as possible. Food donations and prayers that his efforts will be successful are appreciated.

Religious Education: Faith Formation for Children/Educación Religiosa: Formación de Fe para NiñosRegistration for Faith Formation for Children (FFC) for the 2014-2015 school year is now open! You are invited to register your chil-dren for our FFC and Sacramental Prep program. You can registers at our parish office from 9am-6pm Monday thru Friday. We’ll be hosting a parent meeting on September 10 at 7pm. At this meeting, you’ll receive a parent handbook, and meet our FFC teachers and volunteers. Classes will begin on September 24. Teen Confirmation 2014-2015/ Confirmación de Adolecente 2014/2015Attention teens! OLF is beginning a new Confirmation program this year, using Matthew Kelly’s new and engaging program called Deci-sion Point. Confirmation One candidates will meet in the evenings on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, October through May. On the 2nd Sunday of each month candidates will meet in the church hall from 6:30–8:30pm and a pizza dinner will be served. On the 4th Sunday of each month candidates will meet in small groups of 8-10 teens in private homes. In a small group setting candidates will have a greater opportunity to explore their faith and become a family of friends traveling together on their faith journey. Second Year Con-firmation candidates will have an updated program, and will meet in the church hall on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, 6:30-8:30pm. Registration for both Year One and Year Two candidates is now open - register online at www.olfchurch.net.

Adults - would you like to enrich your faith with a family of friends? Faith enrichment opportunities are available for adults interested in volunteering with the Confirmation program. No experience necessary. All teachers will attend workshops instructing them on how to lead a class and on the theology of the class. Atención Adolescentes! OLF está comenzando un nuevo programa de la Confirmación este año, con un nuevo y atractivo programa de Matthew Kelly llamado punto de decisión. Candidatos de primer año de Confirmación se reunirán por las tardes en el segundo y cuarto domingo de cada mes, de octubre a mayo. El segundo do-mingo de cada mes los candidatos se reunirá en el salón McGowan de 6:30-8:30 pm se ofrecerán refrigerios. El cuarto domingo de cada mes los candidatos se reunirán en grupos de 8 a 10 adolescentes en casas particulares. En un grupo pequeño los candidatos tendrán una mayor oportunidad de explorar su fe y convertirse en una familia de amigos y juntos compartirán su camino de fe. Los candidatos de se-gundo año de Confirmación tendrán un programa actualizado, y se reunirán en el salón MCgowan el primero y tercer domingo de cada mes 6:30-8:30 pm. Adult Faith Formation / Invitation to JourneyThe Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which people become members of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is concerned with the total formation of the person into:

◆ Believing with the Church

◆ Living with the Church community

◆ Praying with the Church

◆ Serving with the Church community

The RCIA is intended to serve:

◆ The unbaptized who would like to learn more about the Catholic Religion

◆ Those baptized in another religion who think they might like to become Catholic

◆ Those baptized Catholic who have not completed the Initia-tion Sacraments, Eucharist or Confirmation

◆ Those who have not been raised in the Catholic faith

The RCIA team will host a meet and greet on July 29 at 7pm in McGowan Hall - room E and will meet every Monday night after this date to begin the process of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Are you interested in helping with the RCIA?There are two major ministries that serve those interested in becoming Catholic.

1. Sponsor:

Sponsors are members of the parish who are willing to walk with the catechumens and candidates throughout the process. Your duties are to be in contact once a week, preferably in person but at least by phone. You help them to become involved in parish activities, get to know others in the parish and find answers to their questions. Through this you will likely develop a lifelong friendship. Sponsors must come to know their catechumen or candidate so that they can speak on their behalf at various ceremonies throughout the forma-tion period. This ministry does not require prior experience or special training, just a welcoming spirit.

2. Catechist / Team Member: Team members facilitate adult learning through small group gatherings. Team members present topics and facilitate discussion. Presentations might be on some form of prayer or some topic about God, His people or the Church. Resources are available to help one to prepare. A presenter is never alone during their presentation. Other team members and at least one master catechist will be pres-ent to assist the presenter. Catechists are required to move toward getting diocesan certification. Team members are also members of the parish who have a sincere interest in welcoming the participants and encouraging them along their journey.
