PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

I am happy to be back in the parish after having a wonderful time with my family and friends, the most that I enjoyed on vacation was the company of my little nephews and nieces, being able to play and pray with them. August will be my last month of duty as Pastor of SSPP. On September 1, Fr. Javier Ibarra will take the responsibility of pastoring the parish. Needless to say we need to pray and support our new pastor. What encouraging is this Sunday’s gospel as we see the disciples struggling to survive in a moment of turmoil! In the hour of the disciples need, Jesus came to them. When the wind was contrary and life was a struggle, Jesus was there to help. In life the wind is often contrary. There are times when we are up against it and life is a desperate struggle with ourselves, with our temptations, with our sorrows and decisions. At such a time no one needs to struggle alone, for the Lord comes to us across the storms of life with hand stretched out to save, and with his calm clear voice telling us take heart and have no fear, I am with you. Pope Francis comments on this gospel is very encouraging too, he says: “This story is a beautiful icon of the faith of the Apostle Peter. In the voice of Jesus who tells him: “Come!”, he recognizes the echo of the first encounter on the shore of that very lake, and right away, once again, he leaves the boat and goes toward the Teacher. And he walks on the waters! The faithful and ready response to the Lord’s call always enables one to achieve extraordinary things. But Jesus himself told us that we are capable of performing miracles with our faith, faith in Him, faith in His word, faith in His voice. Peter however begins to sink the moment he looks away from Jesus and he allows himself to be overwhelmed by the hard-ships around him. But the Lord is always there, and when Peter calls him, Jesus saves him from danger. Peter’s char-acter, with his passion and his weaknesses, can describe our faith: ever fragile and impoverished, anxious yet victori-ous, Christian faith walks to meet the Risen Lord, amid the world’s storms and dangers.” the key of happiness and perseverance in our faith is to follow the Lord Jesus and His message. If we begin to negotiate with the world, we are keeping away from the presence of the Lord and the result is that we may sink in ourselves, in our own selfish desires that will lead us to desperation and sadness. Lord I will follow you wherever you go, that has to be our resolution. He will lead us to the fulfilment of our vocation.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: Please consider bringing your child for an earthly Christian formation. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an "atrium," a room pre-pared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials they use to help them absorb the most essential procla-mations of the Christian faith. In an atrium the child can ponder a biblical passage or a prayer from the liturgy by tak-ing the material for that text and working with it - placing wood figures of sheep in a sheepfold of the Good Shepherd, setting sculpted apostles around a Last Supper table, or preparing a small altar with the furnishings used for the Eu-charist.

Seminarians: the seminarians are back just for a day. They will be leaving for their annual camping trip in Colorado from the 13 to the 26 of August. Pray for them.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
