April 12, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence Easter Sunday
Dear Parishioners, Happy Easter! I hope that you and yours find the joy the Lord wishes you. Christ is risen! Indeed, He is risen! And there is cause for rejoicing here. Is there? This COVID-19 Pandemic has changed our lives and challenged us like nothing else. I know people are hurt-ing, alone, afraid, and bored. And we have a long way to go before it gets better. This is a time to reflect on the importance of our faith lives. When I have every reason to doubt that Jesus is truly with me and loves me my faith in Him demands that I stop and think. Who is Jesus? Does He love me? Is He here with me now, in this moment, even though I’m in such torment. One way that we ask those kinds of questions is the same way Jesus did. “My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?” Or as He said it in his native Aramaic “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani” Those words are from Psalm 22, which in and of itself reminds us that Jesus is teaching us something, not just yelling out in frustration like perhaps we have been doing over the past few weeks. In their book The Gospel of Matthew Curtis Mitch and Edward Sri write this about the passage” “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani” is a quote from Ps 22:1 in the Aramaic language Jesus commonly spoke. Matthew’s crucifixion scene has already alluded to this psalm several times (27:35, 39, 43). In quoting Ps 22, Jesus expresses intense suffering. He identifies himself with the psalmist, who was ridiculed and abused by his enemies and felt as if God had abandoned him. However, the psalmist goes on to express tremendous trust in God in the midst of this trial, confident that God will rescue him. By quoting the opening line of this psalm, Jesus evokes the whole of Ps 22, which describes God’s rescue of his suffering righteous one. Therefore, Jesus’ words My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? do not represent despair but anticipate the confident hope of the suffer-ing psalmist that God will rescue him and vindicate him in the end. ( Mitch, C., & Sri, E. (2010). The Gospel of Mat-thew (p. 360). Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic.) In his encyclical Spe Salvi “Saved in Hope” Pope Benedict XVI wrote “The Christian faith has shown us that truth, jus-tice, and love are not simply ideals, but enormously weighty realities. It has shown us that God—Truth and Love in per-son—desired to suffer for us and with us. Bernard of Clairvaux coined the marvelous expression: Impassibilis est Deus, sed non incompassibilis—God cannot suffer, but he can suffer with. Man is worth so much to God that he himself be-came man in order to suffer with man in an utterly real way—in flesh and blood—as is revealed to us in the account of Jesus’ passion. This means that in all human suffering we are joined by one who experiences and carries that suffering with us; hence [consolation] is present in all suffering, the consolation of God’s compassionate love—and so the star of hope rises. (Benedict XVI, Saved in Hope: Spe Salvi (San Francisco: Ignatius, 2008), 39.) Man is worth so much to God that he himself became man in order to suffer with us. In Jesus God has united Himself to us to conquer sin and death and to lead us to Heaven. The idea of His suffering with us reminds us of the basics of our faith, that God is always with us. Do we believe this? And if we do, can that faith help us in this time. I think so. But we need to understand that God did not send us COVID-19 and all the suffering that has come with it. But He is suffer-ing with us during it. That is what true love means. Good times. Bad times. Sickness. Health. No matter what the sea-son, God is with us. That is His promise. And that can be our source of consolation and peace as we struggle to find the joy of Easter amidst the sorrow of our current circumstance. As someone put out on Facebook, “The Churches are emp-ty, but so is the tomb.” Jesus Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen! Happy Easter everyone.
God Bless, Fr. Chris

C.S. Lewis Book Club: Lawrence, MA 2019-2020 Calendar
Facilitator: Rev. Andrew M. Beauregard, F.P.O.
Most First, Third and Fifth Mondays of the Month St. Augustine Chapel
128 Ames Street, Lawrence, MA 6:50pm Doors Open 7:00pm Opening Prayer/Introduction of the Evening topic 7:10pm Discussion of a work of C.S. Lewis (see below) 8:25pm Closing Prayer/Announcements
We will meet on the following Monday evenings listed, including state or national holidays. In the event of two or more inches of snow falling after 6:00pm, the evening is cancelled. Please do the “assigned readings” before the evenings listed below and think about the readings ahead of time so that you can contribute something to the topic. Lewis’ style is simple, yet profound. What does he tell us about God, Jesus, our common humanity, prayer, the Christian life and life everlast-ing? These are not technical talks; but a friendly atmosphere where we can freely contribute our insights. Prior knowledge of C.S. Lewis’ life or writings are not necessary—just an open heart seeking the truth in love. In most cases, all of the works can be found at your local library, perhaps even on line. You may decide to purchase the individual books at a local bookseller or on Amazon. Books will NOT be provide, so please come with your own copy. Thank you. A Note From Fr. Chris . . .
Hello Everyone, I have a somewhat unusual request. One of the people who comes to our parish occasionally also works with mentally ill people who are living independently, most of them in single room occupancy places. They all have limited income and regularly use food banks. Many of the food banks don’t have food and some of the food banks I’ve heard are closed which places these folks in a predicament during these difficult times. If you are able to donate anything please consider taking part. The staff will come by and pick up the food items and distribute it accordingly. Please leave these food items on the screened porch at the Parish Office located at 22 Plymouth St., Methuen, MA Non-perishable items such as peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, mac and cheese, etc...the usual items that can help peo-ple in these situations get through. If you can help, please do so. If you do come, please remem-ber our social distancing guidelines. If someone is dropping something off on the porch, please wait in your car until they go. Thank you, stay healthy, know that you are in my prayers and God Bless! Fr. Chris
