  • WORDS FROM OUR SHEPERD

When the Pandemic with COVID-19 started this past March and all the churches were closed until the end of May, some churches started live-streaming their Masses.

When that happened, I thought two things: 1. Since some parishes were streaming their Masses there were enough choices for those who wanted to watch online, and 2. This is not going to last long. Now seven months later, with no end in sight, I realized that I was wrong and things are not returning to normal quickly, if at all. With that said, Our Lady of Grace will start live streaming the 4 pm Saturday Vigil Mass on October 17th. The Mass can be seen by going to the parish website and on the right-hand side of the main page, beside the picture of the altar, click on the words “click here” to view the Mass. The Mass will be saved for a week until the following Saturday. Those who are unable to view the Mass on Saturday can then view it at their convenience. Eventually we hope to also live stream the weekday Masses on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

The Pandemic also caused Eucharistic Adoration to be halted. I am happy to announce that Eucharistic Adoration (on a limited basis) will start up again on Tuesday October 20th. The hours will be after the 8 am Mass until 6:00 pm. I ask those who will be coming for Adoration to continue to wear a mask and wipe down the area in which you are sitting and/or kneeling before you leave.

Have a Blessed week! Fr. Bill

    FAMILY PERSPECTIVES

The landowner in today’s gospel entrusted his land to the tenants. They did not own the land. Our children are entrusted to us. We do not own them. They belong to God. Tend to them well so God will be pleased with our parenting efforts.

    NEIGHBORLY LOVE

We can never love our neighbor

too much. —St. Francis de Sales

    TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In 1971, the Va can Congrega on for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the na onal liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to par cipate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adapta ons for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, understandable texts, a simplified Lec onary, more ac ve par cipa on, and most surprisingly, new Eucharis c Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharis c Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a mely Christmas gi for the children of the world.

The prayers are the first to be wri en fresh in a modern language—not La n, but French and German—then translated into English, Italian, and Spanish. With a sense of cau on, these new prayers were approved for three years, un l 1977, but it soon became apparent that they had truly been embraced. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

SAINT TERESA OF JESUS (1515-1582) October 15

Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you. Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Muslims and becoming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother’s death, when Teresa was fourteen, inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary’s order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mystical prayer and John of the Cross’s collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God, lacks nothing. When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace—and humor. Discovered devouring leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, “When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!” To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted: “What we really need around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms!” God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are her “Breviary Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

NEXT WEEKEND we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The envelope is in your monthly packet. Thank you for your generosity.

    GOD REVEALED TO THE NATIONS

What wonderful images we have today of the reign of God! Isaiah speaks to us of a great feast—a heavenly feast—a feast of abundance with rich foods and choice wines. It is the Lord’s own affair, Isaiah explains, when God will unite all nations, dry every tear, and destroy death forever. Then, too, will the entire earth rejoice in the Lord and bask in God’s saving grace.

Jesus speaks of heaven in terms of a feast as well. Here, the kingdom of heaven is likened to a king’s wedding feast given for his son. This is a feast of abundance also, with the fattened cattle prepared just so. But many of the people invited don’t want to come, so the king invites anyone who would honor his son by their presence there. And Paul tells us that whether we live abundantly or in humble circumstances, we can do all things in the Lord who strengthens us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Annual Mass of Remembrance The Annual Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated this year on Friday, November 6th at 7 pm. All parishioners are encouraged to attend this beautiful liturgy. The deceased of our parish family from the past year (October 2019–September 2020), will be remembered in a special way at this Mass as their names will be read in a Litany of Praise. There will be a lighted, personalized candle on the steps of the sanctuary in their memory and available for the family to take home at the end of the Liturgy.

During the month of November, we remember and pray for those that are no longer with us. The Book of the Dead is unavailable this year. Instead, the All Souls Remembrance envelopes (in your monthly packet) will be used to remember your loved ones.

ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE envelopes were mailed to you with your monthly contribution envelopes. Additional envelopes may be found by the collection baskets as you enter the Church.

    • Please place your completed envelope in the collection basket during any of the weekend masses.

    • Your stipend will be recorded and the envelope will be placed in the basket on the steps of the sanctuary for you. Please do not place your envelope directly in this basket.

    • Loved ones listed on the envelopes will be prayed for during the month of November, the month dedicated to praying for All Souls.

    • Additional envelopes will also be available at the rectory office.
