From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In the Catholic Church, the month of November is the final month of the Liturgical Year, and is a period of several weeks wherein God’s people traditionally engage in various practices that focus our attention prayerfully on the reality of “the last things”—Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell. The Church does this not to be morose or negative, but rather to be true to her calling to proclaim the Gospel in all its fullness.

The primary way whereby the Church helps us to focus on these realities that pertain to the end of our earthly life and to the life that awaits us in eternity is through the celebration of the Liturgy. The first two days of November are occasions on which we celebrated All Saints Day (November 1st) and All Souls Day (November 2nd). The first celebration, the Solemnity of All Saints, honored all those whose holiness of life on earth has already brought them a full share in the glorious life of heaven. The second celebration, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, represents the Church’s loving intercession for all our brothers and sisters in Christ whose earthly life has ended in death, and who now await the Last Day when Christ himself shall come to judge the living and dead.

Throughout November the Church’s Liturgy, through the prayers and Scripture Readings that it offers us, strives to draw our attention to these “last things”, precisely so that we can more earnestly, more sincerely and more authentically prepare for them. So when you come to Mass in November—indeed, whenever you come to Mass, but especially in November—remember that we are not merely trying to get an obligation out of the way for another week. Rather we come as men and women who are mortal creatures seeking from God the mercy we need to be ready to welcome Christ when he comes on the Day of Final Judgment, and the sanctifying grace necessary to gain from him the immortal life of Heaven.

Grace and peace to all,

Fr. Kevin

Remembering Those Who Have Died

During the month of November, beginning with the Feast of All Souls, we remember all those who have died, including parishioners from this past year. We invite you to bring a picture of your loved one and place it on the memorial table near our All Souls Banners. You can also write their names in our special Book of Prayer. We will keep all of them in our pray-ers. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen

Family Faith Sunday November 3rd

How do we live a joy-filled life through the gift of the Ten Commandments, firmly grounded in God’s Word?

All families are welcome to come to our next Family Faith Sunday in the Walmesley Center Gym starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 10:45 a.m.

Families are encouraged to attend the 11:00 a.m. Family Mass if your schedule permits. The Ten Commandments are important to our lives as Catholics. They reflect the covenant God made with the ancient Israelites. The Ten Commandments helped to keep the Israelites faithful in their relationship with God, and they do the same for us today. The commandments flow from our dignity as children of God. We have been redeemed by Jesus Christ, God’s Son and our Brother. We are temples of the Holy Spirit. We belong to a community of faith and are surrounded by a Communion of Saints. Therefore, there are things we do and things we do not do. The commandments are aimed at our happiness as we live up to our dignity.

In the ”The Joy of the Gospel”, Pope Francis wrote, “The study of the sacred Scriptures must be a door opened in every believer. It is essential that the revealed work radically enrich our families and our efforts to pass on the faith.”

Come and participate in fun, thought provoking activities with your children and learn how the Ten Commandments matter and how it benefits each of us as God’s people!

Expressing Gratitude

Gracious God, in the busyness of my day, I sometimes forget to stop to thank you for all that is good in my life.

My blessings are many and my heart is filled with gratefulness for the gift of living, for the ability to love and be loved, for the opportunity to see the everyday wonders of creation, for sleep and water, for a mind that thinks and a body that feels.

I thank you, too, for those things in my life that are less than I would hope them to be. Things that seem challenging, unfair, or difficult. When my heart feels stretched and empty, and pools of tears form in my weary eyes, still I rejoice that you are as near to me as my next breath and that in the midst of turbulence, I am growing and learning.

In the silence of my soul, I thank you most of all for your unconditional and eternal love. Amen

This Week’s Readings at Mass Jesus Changed Plans

• Wisdom 11:22-12:2 - God’s mercy • 2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2 - Exhortation to faithfulness • Luke 19:1-10 - Zacchaeus the tax collector

Questions of the Week

1. When has someone who was busy or in high demand changed plans to be available for you or a loved one?

2. Is there a particular area in your life where you feel particularly driven or pressured but perhaps God is inviting you to slow down, change directions, or reconsider your path? Please share.

Why we Sought Asylum in the United States

Are you concerned about the asylum-seekers arriving at our southern border? Do you have questions about why and how they come, and what happens when they arrive? Are you curious about the legal process? OLG Immigrant Ministry invites you to meet two families seeking asylum in Seattle and the family sponsoring them on Sunday, November 17 after the 11:00 a.m. Mass in the Walmesley Center (food provided…children welcome)! Both families were separated from their children at the border; the adults deported while the children remained here in detention centers. Meet some of the people behind the stories, hear about their realities, and find out how to get involved.

Clean water can transform lives. This one thing can reduce and prevent a number of illnesses. This is all possible thanks to the federal government's "USAID" programs. Visit www.crs.org/stories for more information!

Knitters And Crocheters Needed!

Do you knit or crochet? Why not join us? We knit and crochet hats and scarves for the needy. We also knit and crochet prayer shawls for Hospice patients. Beginners welcome! We meet monthly on the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of the month from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m in the Pastoral Center. You can bring your needles/hooks, yarn and what-ever patterns you wish to work on, or pick some up at the meeting. Snacks will be provided. Christmas Wreaths

We would again like to make available to you Christmas wreaths made by the farm worker women of Oregon. Your purchase of a wreath supports the women as they work towards economic and leadership development. The wreaths are beautiful and long lasting and are well worth the cost of $35. We will be taking orders after all Masses on the weekends of November 9/10 and 16/17 in the back of the church. The wreaths will be available for pickup after Mass on 11/30 or 12/1. After 20 years, we have decided this will be our last year of taking wreath orders so if anyone is interested in taking on this great service project, please let us know.

New Daytime Inquiry Group Starting For Those Interested In Learning More About The Catholic Faith.

You will have an opportunity to share your questions and curiosity about the Catholic faith in a welcoming and supportive environment. Sessions will take place on Mondays, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. For more information, contact Helen Oesterle at 206-935-0358, Ext. 108 or [email protected].

Caring For God’s Creation

It might be tempting to buy disposable or single-use items for the sake of convenience, but they create tons of needless waste. Kick the habit of buying single-use things and invest in products with a longer lifespan in order to reduce waste. Some examples of disposable or single-use products that you might consider phasing out of your shopping list are: Coffee pods, plastic tooth flossers, disposable razors, toothpicks, cotton balls, and makeup remover wipes.

50+ Social Activities Group

MONTHLY - On the 2nd Thursday of the month, at about 9:30 a.m., come to The Chelan for our breakfast meeting. Come after Mass, 9:30 a.m. is just a goal. Come anytime just once or come monthly to have a voice in helping to choose our upcoming activities.

Christmas Cruise will be on Wednesday, December 4th, starting at 11:30 a.m. More details to come.

We can talk about MOHAI, and the trip to Taproot Theater or Burien Actors Theater next spring. Questions: Call Judy Killion at 206-285-3329.

Providence Mt. St. Vincent Bazaar and Bake Sale

The Providence Mount St. Vincent Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale will happen on Friday and Saturday, November 15th and 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Main Lobby of the Mount (4831 35th Avenue SW, Seattle). The Bazaar will include both new and gently used items - holiday decorations and gifts as well as house-hold goods, books and various unexpected treasures. All proceeds will benefit the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation to support resident programs and services.

Please Respect NO PARKING Zones Around The Church

This past weekend we had a medical incident at Mass which required paramedics and a fire truck. Due to people parking in “NO PARKING” and “FIRE LANE” zones, it was very difficult for the fire truck to leave. For the safety of everyone, please do not park in these areas. Our parish is blessed with lots of spaces for parking, including our two lots and street parking next to the church. We encourage you to come a little early so you can park your car and arrive at Mass on time!
