Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School
Parent-Student Handbook School Year 2018-2019
2
Welcome to Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School
This handbook is published to inform parents/guardians and students of the policies, rules
and regulations for Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School. Both parents/guardians and
students are responsible for reading and supporting all of the policies, rules and regulations as
presented in this handbook.
We recognize that parents are the primary educators of their children, and that the school
serves as an extension of that responsibility. The faculty and staff of Our Lady of Las Vegas
Catholic School take this responsibility seriously and endeavor to assist you in developing
Catholic Christian attitudes and behaviors as an integral part of your child’s growth process.
Should misunderstandings arise between home and school, the first avenue of discussion should
be with the classroom teacher or activity supervisor; he/she is the person best able to provide you
with the facts. Then, if the situation needs further resolution, the Principal will be happy to assist
you.
Please keep in mind that your support of school policies, rules and regulations is
imperative. Your child is to respect the authority and expertise of the school staff; this is
essential if a positive learning environment is to exist. The faculty/staff of Our Lady of Las
Vegas Catholic School strives to work with you in order to provide each child with the best
Catholic, academic education possible.
The Diocese of Las Vegas and Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School reserves the right
to unilaterally change the policies contained in the handbook at any time, to cancel any policy, or
to decline to apply any particular policy to a given situation if in its discretion to do so would
best serve the interests of the Diocese of Las Vegas.

class instruction due to excessive absences and tardiness. Refer to the school calendar and plan
any vacations to coincide with what is already scheduled. Please note: If a student is absent for
more than twenty days in one school year, promotion to the next grade may be denied.
STUDENT MEDICAL &
EMERGENY INFORMATION
Parent Inventory/Enrollment Sheet: During the registration process, parents are requested to
alert the school staff to student medical concerns. Allergies, serious medical problems, and
emergency information must be complete and current.
Immunization records: Shots must be current as mandated by the Nevada State Dept. NRS
439.550.
Medication: The school secretary DOES NOT have access to any type of medication for your
child(ren). Any medication from home is to be brought to the office and dispensed by the
secretary.
A note with a signature by a parent/guardian that includes the date, time the medicine is to be
given, and the correct dosage must accompany the medication. For situations of medication
disbursement that are ongoing, where School Personnel must give medication, a Medication
Form must be filled out, signed, and returned to school before dispensation may begin. This
form must be filled out annually.
17
Medical Appointments: If at all possible, please do not make medical appointments during
school hours. If necessary, we ask that you send a note to the teacher the day prior to the
appointment. Requests for student dismissals must be made in writing to the homeroom teacher.
Parents/guardians are to come to the office (never to the classroom) to sign out a student.
Telephone: Parents should only call the school in times of emergency or to request a
conference. Students are permitted to use the phone in emergencies or in cases of illness. It is
both the parent’s and student’s responsibility to make sure lunches, school articles, and
plans for after school, are made before the child comes to school in the morning. Any
forgotten or misplaced items must be brought to the school office, not the child’s classroom. The telephone in the school office is a business phone. No child will be called from class to the
phone during school hours. No child will be allowed to call home for homework, projects, etc.
Emergency Drills and Procedures: Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School conducts practice
drills monthly. Fire and Emergency Evacuation Plans are posted throughout the school in
classrooms and other occupied rooms. Fire drills are conducted each month except November,
February, and May. In those three months, a shelter-in-place drill is conducted. Tornado and
earthquake drill procedures are also reviewed with all classes.
We do a Shelter-in-Place when a “Lock Down” procedure is warranted. If an entire campus
evacuation is necessary, all children will be led to Howard Wasden Elementary School at 2831
Palomino Lane. Parents will be given information regarding this emergency evacuation through
the school office.
LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS
Students of OLLV are not permitted to leave the school grounds alone, for any reason.
If the child must leave for reason of illness or appointments, a parent/guardian must come to the
school office to get the child and sign him/her out. A written note for early dismissal must
accompany the child on the day of the appointment. The note then must be presented to the
homeroom teacher. Whenever a child leaves school before the end of the school day, a
parent/guardian must sign the child out with the school office. This is for your child’s safety.
18
NON-CUSTIODIAL PARENT (BUCKLEY AMENDMENT)
This school abides by the provisions of the Buckley Amendment with respect to the rights of
non-custodial parents. In the absence of court order to the contrary, a school will provide the
non-custodial parent with access to the academic records and to other school-related information
regarding the child. If there is a court order specifying that there is to be no information given, it
is the responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the school with an official copy of the
court order.
CURRICULUM
The curriculum at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School is based on the guidelines and
objectives developed and published by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, as adapted by the
Department of Education, Diocese of Las Vegas. Our Lady of Las Vegas School complies with
all mandates regarding curriculum matters as required by the State of Nevada.
The curriculum guide includes Scope and Sequence Charts for objectives to be introduced,
developed and mastered in all subject areas in Grades K – 8. Subjects included are Religion,
Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, P.E., Health and Technology.
EVALUATION AND GRADING
Diocesan Testing: The Standardized Achievement testing program used by the Diocese of Las
Vegas is the Terra Nova Common Core test and is administered to Grades 2 through 8 in the
third week of September. Results of all testing is shared with parents as soon as the school has
the information.
Progress Reports: EDLINE is a computer-based program utilized by all teachers in 1st through
8th grade to communicate the student’s academic and behavioral progress as well as classroom
news. Student grades are required to be updated by the teachers every week. Written reports are
sent home at mid-trimester to the parents of students in all grades, pre-k through grade
eight. The first mid-trimester progress report is reviewed at the parent/teacher conference in
early October. This conference is mandatory. If the parent is unable to attend at the scheduled
time, another time must be scheduled.
Report Cards: The report card is the central means of communicating the progress of your
child(ren) to you. Report cards are distributed at the end of each trimester. Each report card will
be sent home in a white report card envelope. The white envelope must be signed and returned
to your child’s teacher or to the school office. The actual report card may be kept for your
records.
SLE Progress Report: Each trimester during the school year, a progress report assessing your
child with regards to the Student Learning Expectations will be sent home in October, February
and May.
19
THE DIOCESAN GRADING SCALE
All special subjects such as P.E., Music, Art, and Technology will be counted in the student’s
GPA. They will, however, weigh less since they are not taught everyday. These grades will be
averaged together and then divided by the four subjects. This grade will then be averaged in
with the other major subjects.
Honor Roll (Grades 6 – 8): There will be one honor roll each trimester. Students meeting the
criteria will receive certificates for their accomplishment.
Silver: an overall 89% grade point average
Gold: an overall 94% grade point average
Principal’s Award: Nothing lower than a 94% grade point average in each subject area.
*If there are any Ns or Us in the areas of conduct, effort, character, behavior, or work
habits on a student’s report card, or if the student is on a disciplinary contract, he/she will
not be considered for honor roll.
Students who have met the eligibility stated above will receive certificates three times a year for
their accomplishment.
Promotion/Retention: The decision to promote, place or retain a student rest in the authority of
the Principal. The Teachers’ professional expertise and input will weigh heavily upon this
decision. Promotion in the primary grades depends upon the proficiency achieved in Language

Arts and Mathematics. Retention, if necessary, is more beneficial in these grades than in the
upper grades.
Parental awareness and cooperation is the key. The parent/guardian must be aware of the child’s
progress. OLLV send home each trimester a report card and a mid trimester progress report that
show the student’s progress to the parents. Parents should set up an appointment to see the
teacher if there are concerns.
Students with irregular attendance or poor work may be retained or conditionally promoted.
When it is necessary to retain a student, the parents, teacher(s) and Principal will meet and try to
reach a mutual agreement. However, the Principal has the final decision whether to retain or not
of not accepting the student in the next grade if the student is incapable of academically
performing at that level.
HOMEWORK
Homework is necessary to accomplish the optimum instruction within the classroom while
promoting independent study habits. Homework is due on the date assigned; however, the
teacher for special circumstances may make exceptions. When students are absent, they will
have up to one day per absence (not to exceed one week) to make up missing work.
Students are not allowed to call home for parents to bring their homework
UNIFORM POLICY
All students are to be dressed in the proper school uniform that is purchased through the
approved uniform stores. Students who do not come to school in proper attire will be sent home.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Participation in Extra-and/or Co-Curricular Activities: Extra-curricular activities include,
but are not limited to: Choir, Altar Servers, Student Council, Geography and Spelling Bee,
Science Fair, Yearbook, Cheerleading, Forensics, National Junior Honor Society and Sport
activities sponsored by the Catholic School Sports’ League. There is a nominal $10 fee required
from each athlete per sport; payment is required prior to participation.
At Our Lady of Las Vegas School, the belief is that academics, effort, and conduct are of prime
importance because they are the building blocks for future success. Therefore, academics, effort
and behavior must be at an acceptable level before students may participate in extra or co-
curricular activities. These activities are privileges, not rights.
The students must have and maintain a minimum 2.0 (70%) grade point average (GPA) and have
satisfactory conduct and effort. Any student who wants to be part of an extra or co-curricular
activity must have an eligibility form signed by his/her teachers. When a student is on academic
or disciplinary probation, he/she may not join any new activity during that trimester
If a student is absent for any part of the school day, he/she will not be permitted to
participate in any extra-curricular activity on that day.
CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS
Classroom Parties: The classroom teacher will permit classroom parties or celebrations after
receiving approval from the Principal. Food is not to be brought into the classroom unless
specifically requested by the teacher. Classroom parties are permitted on the days and hours
assigned.
Student Birthdays: To honor a student on his/her birthday, the child is treated to his/her own
non-uniform day. A student whose birthday falls on non-school days or Mass days, will
establish his/her “School birth date” with the teacher. Parents may provide a treat to be shared
by the class. Please send individually wrapped treats to the school office in the morning. Please
DO NOT SEND CAKES, which need to be cut and distributed. Cupcakes are an easier
alternative. Invitations to parties may be distributed in the classroom only when EVERYONE in
the class is invited (or all boys or all girls are invited).
Reminder: “Attention Getters” such as balloons, flowers, or other surprises are not to be sent to
school; they will not be delivered to a classroom.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips are privileges not rights, for students in grades K-8. The school and/or individual
teachers provide the opportunity for the student to learn through experience plan field trips.
Before departing, students are required to bring a signed permission slip from their
parent(s)/guardian indicating approval of the trip and allowing participation. Also, trips may be
withheld as a consequence for poor academic accomplishment, excessive missing work, or
unsatisfactory conduct.
24
EIGHTH GRADE EXPECTATIONS
The eighth grade is a very exciting time for the students. Besides being an enriching year
academically, there are many activities in which the students are able to be involved. There are
dances, field trips, (one being the big end of the year trip) etc.
Please be advised that any student, who has unsatisfactory conduct, excessive missing work
and grades of D’s or F’s, will be excluded from one or all of these activities.
These activities are privileges for those who have done what is expected of them and not
rights just for being in eighth grade.
Any 8th grade student who is excluded from the end of the year class trip, and attends the
trip on his/her own anyway, forfeits all graduation activities, including the Awards dinner
and the actual Graduation.
All tuition payments as well as any and all other payments and fees must be paid in full, (no
later than Tuesday, May 9, 2019) before a student will be permitted to participate in any
graduation activities, beginning with the 8th grade end of the year field trip.
Transportation for all Our Lady of Las Vegas students will be through an approved bus company
of the Diocese of Las Vegas, Nevada.
LUNCH PROGRAM
Every student must have a pre-arranged plan for lunch before they arrive at school. They are
encouraged to either bring a nutritious lunch or purchase hot lunch at school. Glass containers
and carbonated drinks are not allowed. Forgotten or misplaced lunches must be delivered to the
school office by 11:30 a.m. Fast food is only permitted when the teacher is arranging a special
treat for the entire class. Students are responsible for leaving the eating area clean.
LOST ARTICLES
Lost or Damaged Textbooks: All textbooks must be covered. Only workbooks may be
covered with contact paper. Because of the high cost of texts, the family will be held responsible
for replacement costs.
Library Lost and Damaged Books: Lost and damaged books must be paid for before checking
out any more materials. Due to the rising cost to replace books and the need to keep our library
up to date for all our students, students are charged for books returned damaged. When books
are lost the student is charged the fee for the book, the processing, and shipping of a replacement.
Students who do not respond to the library in regards to lost or overdue books may lose their
library privileges, are subject to disciplinary action, and will be turned over to the school office
for collection. Library Fines are accessed for books returned later than six weeks.
Lost and Found: All clothing items, book bags, ties and other personal items must have your
child’s name on it. Lost articles will be placed in the lost and found, located by the picnic tables.
25
STATEMENT OF EXPECTATIONS
Spiritual Expectations: Parents are the primary teachers of the faith. It is crucial that all
Catholics attend Mass every weekend as a family. Your commitment to Christ will directly
influence your child’s commitment to Christ and His Church. Your faith is the reason our school
is in existence. Your child’s success in life depends upon your dedication and commitment to
our faith.
Academic Expectations: Catholic education is a great privilege and our students must learn to
respect it as such. Students will be issued a conduct referral and/or detention following academic
infractions: Poor conduct/attitude in class, poor effort, lack of attention, and missed homework
assignments. Conduct referrals, detention slips, suspension notices, and notes from teachers
must be signed by the parent and returned to school the morning of the next school day.
Students not adhering to this rule will be sent to the office to call home. *Parents/Guardians
must realize that even if a notice does not come back to school with a parent signature, the
notice will still be filed. Just because a parent/guardian is not aware of a situation, the
notice did not get home, or the parent/guardian refuses to sign the notice does not mean the
situation did not take place.
Behavioral Expectations: Inappropriate behavior must not interfere with order in the
classroom. Punishable behavior includes: disruptive words or actions, cheating, intentionally
injuring another person with physical or verbal abuse or defacing/destroying school property.
Behavior on the school campus will also be monitored. Conduct referrals and/or detentions will
be issued for inappropriate behavior, failure to keep hands to self, rough play, or use of foul
language on the playground. Any student who does not follow the school rules with regards
to behavior may be asked to leave the Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School.
Parent Commitment/Cooperation: Parent cooperation is vital to a student’s success. Support
of school rules and verbal reinforcement of the teacher and school staff encourages the positive
efforts of the student. It is crucial that you support your child’s teacher when speaking with your
child. Trust your child, but support the teacher’s actions, especially in disciplinary matters.
Parents MUST BE PRUDENT in home conversations with their children. Lack of support can
undermine our teachers’ authority and have a direct, adverse effect on your child’s attitudes
towards school. Always schedule an appointment with the teacher to get a clear picture of the
situation.
The aftercare program begins promptly at 2:40 pm for grades Pre-k and Kindergarten and
2:50pm for grades 1-8. Only school employees should be on campus at this time. Please
remember to conduct oneself in a Christian manner at all times, and if you have concerns voice
them through a conference with the Administration and not to other parents while on school
grounds.
26
Prohibition of Bullying, Intimidation and Harassment
Bullying, harassment and/or intimidation of any student on school property, at school-sponsored
functions or through electronic means (on or off campus) are prohibited. Our Lady of Las Vegas
Catholic School is committed to each student’s successful education within a safe and respectful
atmosphere.
All reports of bullying are to be reported immediately to the Diocese of Las Vegas Director of
Safety and Emergency Management.
As used in this policy, “bullying, harassment, and/or or intimidation” means unwelcome,
intentional conduct that is not authorized by law which is either severe or is repeated over time in
a situation where an imbalance of power exists between those involved.
Intentional conduct means the act or conduct is willfully, knowingly, and with deliberate
intent to hurt or harm a person or that person’s property.
An imbalance of power can exist on the basis of, but not limited to, a students’ physical
strength, their access to embarrassing information, or popularity to control or harm
others. Power imbalances can change over time and vary in different situations, even if
they involve the same people.
Bullying, harassment, and/or or intimidation can take various forms, including physical
or social, oral or written (including electronic writings).
Bullying, harassment, and/or or intimidation may be motivated by an actual or perceived
personal characteristic, which include, without limitation, race, religion, national origin,
socioeconomic status, disability, sex, sexual orientation, etc.
Behavior that may not qualify as bullying, harassment, and/or or intimidation may
nevertheless be inappropriate and subject to disciplinary action.
Investigation of Reports
Within one business day of the receipt of a report the school, with guidance from the
Director of Safety and Emergency Management, will commence a preliminary investigation into
the allegation to obtain further information and to ascertain whether the allegation has merit,
which may include speaking with the alleged bully and the alleged victim. If, after the initial
investigation, there is substance to the allegation, the parent(s) of the alleged victim will be
contacted within the next business day. Additional investigation, as well as reports to the
authorities, may occur thereafter depending on the facts and circumstances of the matter.
Bullying, harassment, intimidation, and the making of false reports are all considered serious
infractions.
Not Allowed on Campus: No unnecessary items or valuables are to be brought to school (ex.
money, cameras) unless the classroom teacher has given permission. *Cellular phones are
permitted on school grounds as long as they are in the student’s backpack on off and must not be
27
used on school grounds, unless it is late in the day, perhaps after a sporting event. There is
always a phone available for emergencies in the school office if a call is necessary.
An automatic detention, date to be specified by the school, will be the consequence
for any student who uses his/her cell phone on school grounds. The phone will be
taken away and the parent may pick up the phone in the school office. Repeat
offenses will carry more severe consequences.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grades will have their phones collected by their homeroom teachers at
the beginning of the day and they will be returned at the end of the school day.
STATEMENT OF DISCIPLINE CODE
Discipline is an essential element of Christian life. Self-control, respect for peers and adults,
pride in school, nation, and faith are basic attributes expected from students who attend Our
Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School.
Good conduct, on the part of each student, is essential for learning. When a student is constantly
disruptive, teachers are prevented from doing their jobs. This is not fair to the other students
who want to learn or to their parents who are paying for their child’s education. Our Lady of Las
Vegas Catholic School will do everything it can to help the student when a situation of consistent
misconduct occurs. Conferencing with the teacher, principal, and parent will always take place,
and if necessary, the pastor, as well. Students who are consistently misbehaving will be asked to
leave Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School.
We encourage students to grow in self-control and steps are taken to help those who fail to make
a satisfactory adjustment to school. Parents are told about incidents of misconduct. Teacher
conferences are held.
On a more positive note, steps are taken to reward students who display satisfactory behavior; for
example, “Student of the Month, Discipleship Awards, Most Improved Student, and certificates
and other awards differing from class to class depending on the teacher.
DISCIPLINE POLICY
Discipline is a very important part of the education process. It is the reason certain rules are set
in place. Please see the following Graduated Discipline Policy and the steps taken for those
students who choose not to follow the school rules.
1st infraction: Teacher will speak to the student.
2nd infraction: Teacher will speak with the student and contact the parent.
3rd infraction: Principal will speak with the student. Teacher will meet with the parent.
4th infraction: Conference with the teacher, parent, and principal. Detention for student
28
Future infractions may constitute additional detentions and possibly suspensions. Some students
may be placed on a contract in the hope that this will help the student remain on track. If the
negative behavior continues, the student may be asked to leave OLLV.
OLLV Middle School Discipline/Sign-In Policy
Students will be required to “Sign-In” for the following reasons in each class:
--Lack of Preparation
--Missed Homework/Classwork
--Discipline Concerns
--Dress Code
After 10 total “Sign-Ins”, students will be assigned a detention
After 2 detentions, a Required Parent/Teacher/ Principal Conference (RPC) will be scheduled.
“Sign-Ins” are accumulated per trimester. Additional discipline issues will be dealt with at
the teacher’s discretion.
INFRACTIONS
Conduct Referral/Detention: Infractions such as refusal to do work, talking in class, gum
chewing, harassment of others on school grounds, and common incidents that take place
frequently in the classroom may constitute a conduct referral or detention. Parents are notified of
these infractions.
Required Parent Conference (RPC): A Required Parent Conference is a procedure taken for
those students who continually disregard the rules of the school. If the parent does not contact
the school and conference with the principal within two days of receiving notification of
unsatisfactory conduct, the student will not be allowed in school until the conference takes place.
The student must accompany the parent to the conference to discuss consequences, review the
Parent/Student Handbook, and sign a disciplinary contract, if necessary. If a second RPC is
needed, the parent/guardian must meet with the principal and the pastor. A disciplinary contract
will be put in place. If a third RPC is required, he/she will be suspended from school until the
school administration decides whether the student should remain at Our Lady of Las Vegas
Catholic School. Both the student and parent/guardian will be asked to come to school to be
informed of the decision.
**If a student is allowed to remain at OLLV, both the student and the parent/guardian will
be asked to sign a statement to the effect that: If a student is involved in any further
inappropriate behavior of this kind, the student will be asked to leave the school.
29
Grounds for an RPC but not limited to:
1. Conduct that harms the good name of the school
2. Violation of school rules and regulations which include but are not limited to:
a. Violence---ex. Fighting on school grounds, physical harm or injury to another,
extreme loss of self-control (tantrums)
b. Vandalism—deliberate destruction or damage of school property or personal property

vulgar signs or gestures, racial slurs (reference to a student’s color or heritage)
f. Constant uniform infractions
g. Continuous inappropriate conduct
h. Cheating on tests, quizzes, and projects
i. Forgery
PLEASE NOTE: Cheating on Tests and Quizzes is a very offense. A student who cheats
on a test will receive a zero for the test on which he/she has cheated and an unsatisfactory
grade for conduct on the next report card. Students who copy or allow others to copy
homework will receive a zero on the assignment. A parent /guardian will be notified of the
offense (receiving an unsatisfactory on one’s report card) will automatically keep him/her
off any extracurricular activities and/or loss of privileges.
FORGERY: Any student who forges his/her parents signature on any sign and return sent
home by the school will receive an unsatisfactory on his/her report card and will lose
his/her privileges.
Plagiarism: Students are taught what plagiarism is and the seriousness of trying to pass
someone else’s work off as one’s own. Copying an author’s work, word for word, from any
source, such as a book, magazine, internet site etc.,.. A zero for the assignment will be
asked to do it over for no credit, and receive an unsatisfactory on his/her report card for
the Trimester. This may affect any awards for the trimester, end of the year awards, or
extra-curriculum activities.
Suspension: Suspension is the temporary removal of a student from the classroom and/or
school. The primary purpose of suspension is to give the student, parents, and school, the time
needed for resolving a problem. There are two types of suspension: In House Suspension (when
a student is not admitted to class but carries out the suspension time on the school premises.) At
Home Suspension (when a student is excluded from school and remains at home until the
required suspension time is completed). The type of suspension and duration of the suspension is
determined by the Principal. During the days of the suspension, the student will receive zeros for
all graded work done on that day or days. MOST SUSPENSIONS ARE HOME
SUSPENSIONS.
30
Grounds for Suspension but not limited to:
1. Extremely poor conduct
2. Consistent violation of the school rules

the internet, or any other form of media
**Students who have had a problem with behavior throughout the school year, who are
allowed to remain at OLLV, may be placed on disciplinary probation for the next school
year.
Search/Inspections/Seizures—No one has a right of privacy in the lockers, bags, backpacks,

CONFERENCES AND GREIVANCE PROCEDURES
Conferences/Complaints: Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled after the first six weeks of
school. It is requested that all additional conferences be arranged by telephone, note, or email.
Conferences should be held in a spirit of cooperation with mutual goals of communication and
with the best interests of the child as paramount. An issue, concern, or complaint must first be
addressed to the teacher for resolution. If an issue remains unresolved, a conference with the
principal, parent and teacher will be scheduled. Principal conferences are scheduled only
following parent-teacher conferences.
Please do not just drop in on a teacher and expect to have a conference. Teachers are more
than happy to meet with parents but ask that all conferences be scheduled in advance through
written communication, phone, or e-mail. Scheduling a conference in advance gives the teacher
time to get prepared, so the meeting is productive.
Safety Procedures For the safety of all students, per a Diocesan Directive, there have
been some changes made to the drop off and pick up procedures at
Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School.
Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will not longer enter
the campus through the east parking lot. (Beside Bevan Hall II)
They will enter and exit through the West Parking lot Main Gate
with all the other students.
Upon arrival on campus, only Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
parents will be permitted to walk their child(ren) to the classroom.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Simple Parking Lot Procedures for Arrival and Dismissal: The safety of our children is our
primary concern. All drivers are respectfully asked to and are required to follow these
procedures. Please be reminded of the serious fact that during dismissal procedures the teachers
are on SAFETY PATROL and are not permitted to conference with parents. In unity, Christian
respect, and good cooperation, we ask all parents to participate in the school regulations for drop
off and dismissal.
The East Parking Lot (Beside Bevan Hall II): This parking lot no longer for Pre–K and
Kindergarten parents only. This lot may be used for any and all OLLV parents. Simply park
your car in one of spaces and walk to the Main Gate.
The West Parking Lot (Main Parking Lot): Please enter and exit from Campbell Drive.
In the morning enter the first Campbell Drive entrance into the parking lot, make a left turn and
drive all the way up to the of front of the school in a single file. Students are to exit their cars
from the passenger side. Drivers are to remain in their vehicles.
In the afternoon enter the first Campbell Drive into the parking lot, make a left turn and form
four rows in front of the school. Your car will be facing west and headed towards the second
exit onto Campbell Drive. Drivers are to remain in their cars.
Dismissal of the students to their cars: When the students are dismissed through the front gate
of the school, the Assistant Principal or designee will announce “STUDENTS WALK TO YOUR
CARS.” When all students are in their cars and the parking lot is secure, you will hear the
Assistant Principal or designee say, “TEACHERS, “HOLD ALL STUDENTS” “WE ARE
MOVING THE CARS” At that time, the cars will proceed forward in order of row, onto
Campbell Drive. New cars will be pulled in by staff to make four new rows and the process will
continue until all of the students have been dismissed.
Supervision of Students Before and Afterschool: In situations where students fail to be picked
up at the appointed time, a sweep of the school grounds will occur daily. This will occur for the
safety of the students. The sweep will include the areas around Campbell and Alta Drive. Any
student waiting in these areas for pick up or “rides” without written parent permission will be
escorted to the Extended Care program.
For student safety: Parents are NOT to tell their children to wait and/or to be picked up in front
of Bevan Hall. Although picking up your child in front of Bevan Hall may be easier for you, the
parent, it is dangerous for the child.
Parking or Waiting in your car in the Red Fire lanes is prohibited at all times. Anyone not
adhering to the rule will be fined accordingly by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Respectful Learning Environment
42
Increasingly, the media has been filled with disturbing stories about bullying in our nation’s
schools. We all know that bullying can cause pain and embarrassment and at the very least has
no place in any school or institution that is about the dignity of human persons, about life. The
fact that some of the most prominent incidents have not happened at a Catholic school does not
imply that we can be complacent. Our challenge as Catholic educators is to be alert to any
behavior that does not align with the values we hold and attempt to promptly stop such
behaviors, should they occur.
The Diocese of Las Vegas believes that everyone should enjoy our schools equally, feel safe,
secure and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity, athletic ability, intelligence,
religion and nationality. This is essential if a positive learning environment is to exist. As stated
in our school’s Mission and Philosophy Statements, our schools are committed to developing a
framework for moral reasoning and ethical decision-making. The faculty and staff of each
school takes this responsibility seriously and endeavors to assist you in developing Catholic
attitudes and behaviors as an integral part of your child’s growth process. Further, our
curriculum, Schoolwide Learning Expectations, and Life Skills support the necessary
opportunities which allow students to grow in a school community of faith where Gospel values
are nurtured and sustained.
On July 1, 2010, NRS 388.123-139 became law. It prohibits bullying in general and
cyberbullying specifically. The definition set forth in Policy 4260 (Prohibition of Bullying,
Intimidation, and Harrassment) states:
Harassment, intimidation, or bullying– is an intentional electronic, written, verbal, or physical
act that:
• Physically harms a student or damages the student’s property.
• Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education.
• Is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening
educational environment.
• Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school.
Conduct that is “substantially interfering with a student’s education” will be determined by
considering a targeted student’s grades, attendance, demeanor, and interaction with peers,
participation in activities, and other indicators.
Conduct that may rise to the level of harassment, intimidation, and bullying may take many
forms, including, but not limited to, slurs, rumors, jokes, innuendoes, demeaning comments,
drawings, cartoons, pranks, ostracism, physical attacks or threats, gestures, or acts relating to an
individual or group whether electronic, written, oral, or physically transmitted messages or
images. There is no requirement that the targeted student actually possess the characteristic that
is the basis for the harassment, intimidation, or bullying.
The law encourages schools to adopt policies that ensure “a safe and respectful learning
environment.” The victim is not responsible for being a target of bullying. Such behaviors will
not be tolerated. As stated within our Parent/Student handbooks, such behaviors may result in
suspension/expulsion.

Diocese of Las Vegas
Respectful Learning Environment
We believe all Diocese of Las Vegas students should:
Value student differences and treat each other with respect.
Not become involved in bullying incidents or be a bully.
Be aware of the school’s policies and support system with regard to bullying.
Report honestly and immediately all incidents of bullying to a faculty member.
Be alert to your surroundings, especially in places without adult supervison, e.g.,
bathrooms.
Support students subjected to bullying.
Talk to teachers, counselor, and parents about concerns and issues regarding bullying.
Work with other students and faculty, to help the school deal with bullying effectively.
Be a good role model for other students and support them if bullying occurs.
Participate fully and contribute to classroom lessons dealing with bullying.
Students who have been bullied or have seen someone being bullied, should tell the bully to stop
the behavior and speak to an adult, (parent and/or faculty member) about the incident.
We believe all Diocese of Las Vegas parents should:
Work in partnership with the school to encourage positive behavior, valuing differences,
and promoting sensitivity to others.
Discuss regularly with their child their feelings about school work, friendships, and
relationships.
Inform faculty of changes in their child’s behavior or circumstances at home that may
change a child’s behavior at school.
Keep themselves and their child informed and aware of school bullying policies.
Alert faculty if any bullying has occurred.
Support the faculty’s intervention policies.
THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION RETAINS THE RIGHT TO AMEND THE
HANDBOOK FOR JUST CAUSE. PARENTS WILL BE GIVEN PROMPT
NOTIFICATION IF CHANGES ARE MADE.
