AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neigh-bors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The car-penter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the ten-sions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus be-gins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eter-nal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love.

Dear Friends, Please mark your calendars for Saturday, March 2nd. On that day we will be hosting the heart of St. John Vianney, the Curé d'Ars, Patron Saint of Dioce-san Priests. More will following future Bulletins, but I want to thank the Arch-bishop for being the only parish in Marin to host St. John Vianney’s Heart.

Before Christmas, I gave you a rosary from the Holy Land. I also told you these rosar-ies sparked an international incident. Let me explain. Last March, I wanted to get 1500 rosaries to give out to my parishioners. I asked a friend who had a friend in Bethlehem named Jack in Jerusalem and he agreed to send the ro-saries to Novato, since I did not have enough room in my luggage. Guess what? The rosaries were never sent. Since the order for rosaries were sealed with a handshake (people in the mid-dle East rarely use paper receipts), I though I was up a creek. Enter Issa. Issa is the person who came to OLL in early December to sell his Holy Land wares. Issa is from Bethlehem and knew Jack. Issa sent his cousin George in Bethlehem to confront Jack about not sending the rosaries. Things got so heated between George and Jack, that George stood in the doorwayto Jack’s shop, so that the Bethlehem Police got involved. Since Jack was losing a lot of busi-ness, Jack agreed to send the rosaries just in time for Christmas. Thank you , Issa and George, for helping me get the 1500 rosaries I already paid for. You made my parishioners very happy. Today is Super Bowl Sunday. Even though Jared Goff is from Novato, via Marin Cath-olic and Cal, I cannot root for an L.A. Team. I hope it is an entertaining game. Have Great Week! Father Brian

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
