A Letter from the Pastor’s Desk…

You may remember that in the past Our Lady of Lourdes Parish has provided each parish family

with a copy of books by the author Matthew Kelly. Rediscovering Catholicism was the first one

distributed. Then we gave out Rediscover Jesus. Then last year the challenging Kelly book called

Resisting Happiness.

This weekend we're distributing as a gift to all parishioners the Mass Journal published by Matthew Kelly's group

(DynamicCatholic.com).

The purpose of the journal is to provide all of us who attend Mass an opportunity to takes notes and reflect on our ex-

perience of liturgy beyond the hour we spend together each weekend.

In my younger years, my nephews and nieces would regularly attend the Masses I celebrated. They all lived on Long

Island so it was easy to have them attend and very often we'd meet after Mass over breakfast or lunch to discuss what

they had seen and heard at Mass that weekend. Something similar is what we're hoping will arise from the Mass Journals

we're giving out this month.

In truth, for many of us, our experience of Mass, while important for the time we're in Church, becomes something we

put away once we head out the doors of the church building. Our hope is that the Mass Journal will help us to write, re-

flect and discuss all that we experienced at Mass and carry with us beyond into the week ahead.

Please take a copy of The Mass Journal and truly use it to make the experience of Mass a chance for ongoing reflection,

prayer and contemplation. Thank you.

The celebrations of Mass during the week of Christmas were outstanding. That doesn't happen without the direct in-

volvement of many good people. So let me take a moment to thank some of those who made our Christmas something

truly special.

These include my brother priests and deacons, J. C Laws and the terrific parish choir, Our Cantors, Altar Servers, Eucha-

ristic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Greeters, and the parish counters who happily had more work to do with the larger than

usual collection!

I think our Office Staff and all of those who helped to decorate the Church and the rectory and who made it outstand-

ingly festive to match this joyous season.

My thanks go out to all of you who supported the Parish Outreach Office in providing Christmas gifts and food for many

families in the area who might not have known Christmas joy this season without your goodness and generosity.

And let me offer a personal word of thanks to all of you who prayed for my Mom, who took ill shortly before Christmas.

As many of you know, our family spent the Christmas holidays in the hospital with her. It was a beautiful lesson in the

real meaning of Christmas. Truly, the home is where the heart is and our hearts were home in that hospital because that's

where our love was. And throughout, my Mom Cecelia was uplifted by the knowledge of your prayerful support. I am

truly grateful.

Blessed New Year to you and your family.

Msgr. Jim Lisante

Parish Outreach Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est

“We Care” Blankets

As our wonderful group of “Care

Blanket” volunteers continue to meet on

Wednesday mornings from 10:00-

11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of

their love, time and talent in crocheting

and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is

nothing less than a beautiful thing!

Since our group began in November 2009, the completed

blanket count stands at 2,762. I’m sure in no time at all we

will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our

lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring

love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care.

Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet

hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort. If you

are interested in joining our group please contact Parish

Outreach at 516-541-1260.

“Paper Goods”

On occasion, the folks who come to us for

food assistance will ask if we can provide help

with paper products such as toilet paper or

paper towels. Food donations, as you know,

remain our first priority! However, it would

be a helpful addition to the folks we serve if

we could offer some assistance with paper

goods. All donations are greatly appreciated!

Thank you for all you to help those in need.

Parish Outreach “Food Pantry”

To all the good people of our parish family, I cannot thank you

enough for all you do to embrace the disadvantaged in our commu-

nity. Your continued support and great generosity of food dona-

tions, paper goods, school supplies and recent winter coats is a tre-

mendous blessing! We could not do all we do without you! Thank

you! Thank You! Thank You!

Currently our food pantry is in need of:

“Ministry of Consolation”

Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a

wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our

Lady of Lourdes “Ministry of Consolation” team.

The most valuable gifts we can give are those that

come from the heart. The precious gifts of our

time, love and compassion are especially needed

during the time of the loss of a loved one.

Created to provide warmth, caring and personal

attention to assist families in preparation for the

funeral mass, this particular ministry can never

have too many helping hands. Whether your inter-

est be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give

some thought as to sharing your time and talents

and being a part

of this ministry’s call to love and care for one an-

other.

Our Parish depends solely on your generosity to meet each week’s expenses. Our regular Sunday collections account for more than 60% of our operating budget. Your continued support, especially during these difficult economic times, is both needed and appreciated.

conversion of hearts and minds so that all might have reverence and respect for the God-given gift of life, from the moment of con-

ception until natural death. Please pray for an end to violence in all its forms.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION: Make a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in danger of being aborted.

You are asked to ‘spiritually adopt’ one unknown baby and pray that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life

as God intended. Daily prayer: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I

have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen)

HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer & Healing, Gatherings, and Hope

& Healing Weekend Retreats. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental

Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Call 866-575-0075 or email: [email protected]

VISIBILITY MATTERS: Weekly prayerful presence at Planned Parenthood, Massapequa - Saturdays 10:30am-12pm, 35 Car-

mans Rd, Massapequa (across from the mall parking lot). For info: 516-541-8056.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: The pro-life organization STOPP – Stop Planned Parenthood – recently issued its 16th annual survey.

For the first time, the number of Planned Parenthood facilities in the US has fallen below 600. There are now 597 facilities. There

were 700 facilities in 1973 when Roe v Wade was decided, and 938 facilities in 1995 when PP was at its peak. In 2017, Planned Par-

enthood closed 32 medical facilities in 16 states and opened in 5 new communities in 5 different states. Planned Parenthood closed

its last facility in Wyoming in 2017. Wyoming and North Dakota are the 2 states in which Planned Parenthood currently does not

operate a single medical facility. Overall, Planned Parenthood has lost 341 physical facilities over the past 22 years. Planned Parent-

hood has tried to offset the loss of facilities by opening larger and more upscale buildings to attract new customers and accommodate

those who went to the now-closed facilities. A careful analysis of the Planned Parenthood customer count which is given in its an-

nual reports from 2006 through 2015 shows that Planned Parenthood closed 24.9% of its facilities and saw its customer base drop by

23.6%. These decreasing numbers have influenced Planned Parenthood’s single most profitable activity – abortions. Over the last 8

years Planned Parenthood has averaged 328,302 abortions a year. An estimated 50,000 babies will be saved in 2018 because so many

Planned Parenthood centers have closed.

Steven Ertelt of LifeNews.com stated that “Over the New Year’s weekend, Planned Parenthood issued its newest annual report. Al-

though Planned Parenthood bills itself as a woman’s health organization, in reality it is little more than an abortion business. Multi-

ple exposés indicate that it does not provide adoption referrals or prenatal care for women, but it does more abortions than any other

company in the US. The report shows that [Planned Parenthood] had a record income of $1.46 billion and the fifth highest annual

profit - $98.5 million – in its history. In fact, the newest annual report indicates that Planned Parenthood killed over 320,000 unborn

children in abortions. That is well over 1/3 of all the abortions that take place on an annual basis in the US. Fortunately, the number

of abortions continues to fall in almost every state.” Planned Parenthood’s latest report indicates that they performed 7,000 less abor-

tions last year than the year before, and it is the lowest annual abortion number reported by PP since 2007. PP also received $10.9

million less in government funding, and reported that they had lower numbers of female birth control customers, emergency contra-

ception kits, PAP tests, and pregnancy tests. The number of unique customers remained the same – 2.4 million individuals. Even

though the numbers declined, PP achieved record income and profit levels. Jim Sedlak of American Life League stated that “Planned

Parenthood spent the last year reducing medical activity and increasing community and political organizing [resulting in] 721,000

new donors, 250,000 new volunteers and 90,000 people joined its new Planned Parenthood Defenders.” The latest PP report shows

that PP committed 321,848 abortions, had 3,889 adoption referrals, and provided 1,346 individuals with prenatal care. Please pray

for an end to abortions, and if possible, continue to witness at the nearest Planned Parenthood facility.
