Page 2 From The Pastor’s Desk… Also Known as Chardonnay W(h)ines! With Halloween coming this Wednesday, every year I get asked if it is OK for Catho-lics to celebrate Halloween? My response? ABSOLUTELY YES! However, there is a caveat to my endorsement. Celebrate Hal-loween as a Catholic holiday, not a secular

one!! There are plenty of ways that we can celebrate this occasion with-out violating any of the teachings of the Catholic Faith. Here are three practical ways to do this. Remember the saints! Instead of focusing only on just fun and merr i-ment, let us emphasize that Halloween is short for All Hallow’s Eve. Hal-loween is the vigil to the celebration of All Hallow’s Day or All Saints Day – a holy day of obligation. The word “hallow” means holy. So the origin of Halloween is holy! It is a meaningful celebration of the lives of all the saints and these saints include our loved ones who are now in heaven. Halloween is an opportune time to remember the saints with our family and friends. Celebrate Halloween by coming to our 7:00pm Mass on October 31st, the vigil of All Hallow’s Day! Talk about spiritual warfare! Halloween is full of references of evil spirits and dark forces. The occasion is an opportune time to evangelize others about the reality of these evil elements. We can talk to our friends and family about spiritual warfare. More importantly, we can share with them that God is powerful and He will faithfully protect us from harm. Halloween is a day to reflect on Christ’s triumph over sin, death, and Sa-tan. It is our day to laugh at Satan! Dress appropriately! There is nothing wrong with wear ing a costume to join in on the merriment but we need to keep in mind what the Bible says about dressing modestly. We can still participate in the fun without having to wear something that is shameful in the eyes of God. Similarly, we must be careful about costumes that glorify supernatural evil or super-stition. Catholic parents can counteract the costumed characters of vio-lence and darkness by sending their children dressed as one of the saints. Imagine that! A saint showing up at your door instead of a gross bloody Dracula!! It is true that Halloween has been badly corrupted and hyper-commercialized just like Christmas and Easter, but, just as that should never stop Catholics from fully celebrating the great feast of the Church, neither should it stop Catholics from enjoying Halloween as a celebration of the great feast of All Saints. So, have some fun – and Happy Eve of All Saints!! Have a blessed week!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who re-fused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was ex-pelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at www.tyburnconvent.org.uk. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God’s love and care for us. “Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back re-joicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm 126:5–6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joy-ful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATON (Grades K-5)

The Communion of Saints and You Did you know that the Communion of Saints includes all those who have been saved by Jesus Christ—those who are living on earth and those who now live with God in heaven. “Communion” means that we share in the life of Christ, brought about by the action of the Holy Spirit. Even though each of us is a unique individual, we are joined together in a common love for God, common worship, and common work for the coming of God’s Kingdom.

So how can we remember our call to sainthood? Help your children get to know the Saints and their particular stories that inspires us to hear the Lord’s personal call to sainthood. Here are a few suggestions to delve into the legacy of the Church’s strong models of faith.

As a family, create your own book of saints. Have each family member choose a favorite saint focusing on how this saint showed unusual courage, devotion or dedication to others and how we can learn from his or her example.

Create an inspiration box based on the lives of the saints. On small cards, write an inspiring quote from a saint or something about a saint you particularly admire.

Pray a Litany of Saints as a family. For example, a parent prays “Saint Elizabeth” and the children are invited to reply “Pray for us.” Include in your list the saints and holy people you named in your discussion. Conclude with a prayer of thanks for the example of these people to live as Jesus’ disci-ples and your promise to glorify God with your lives!
