LITURGY CORNERToday’s Gospel is one of many “well-known” stories about Jesus, sometimesreferred to as “the Road to Emmaus”.The Risen Jesus, thought to be astranger, joins two of the disciples alongthe road to Emmaus. They wereconfused by the “stranger” because heseems unaware of all that has happened.

As they walk, Jesus “explained to them what referred to him inall the scriptures”. Later when they shared a meal together, they recognized Jesus in the “breaking of the bread”. Most ofus have experienced attending Mass in a church we’ve neverbeen to. We immediately notice how some things are“different” - how it looks, what the priest does, even receivingthe Body and Blood of Christ might be different. But , the Massis entirely familiar. We hear familiar prayers and readings; weparticipate in familiar gestures like sitting, standing andkneeling; we pray the Our Father and extend the Sign of Peaceto those around us. Together we join with a community ofbelievers and welcome the Real Presence of Jesus in ourmidst. It could explain why this Gospel is a favorite for somany people. We, like the disciples, have all been on thatroad, among strangers. Yet we still know the Real Presence ofJesus and we have recognized our brothers and sisters inJesus Christ as we come together for the breaking of thebread. Enjoy your week. Remember to see Jesus in the facesof all the “strangers” we encounter each and every day!

FAITH AT HOMEJesus promised to be with us always, butoften we fail to recognize Him becausewe have different ideas of what He mustbe like. For example, maybe we expectto see a glorious Lord and he appears tous instead as a simple walking

companion. Adults: Have I ever experienced Jesuswalking with me in times of trouble? How did I recognizeHim and how did I respond to His presence?

Children: Do I feel Jesus near me when I am troubled orsad? What do I talk to him about?

A Family Perspective: Families, as the domestic church, have the opportunity to make the family meal a time ofprayerful encounter with one another and with Jesus. Ata family meal we share our experiences of the day andconnect them with the experiences of others in thefamily. We can also enjoy the meal as an opportunity toreflect upon our family life in light of Scripture. At theirbest our family meals can connect us to Jesus too. As youeat, talk together about how the disciples discussed theirexperiences in Jerusalem and how they came tounderstand them differently when Jesus interpreted thoseevents in the light of Scripture.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTMy name is Andrew Gigantino and I am currently aLife Scout working towards the rank of Eagle. Istarted as a cub scout, five years later I had achievedmy Arrow of Light, the highest award in cub scoutingand crossed over to the Boy Scouts. I have been a

life long parishioner of OLM. I am a Minister of the Word and alsohelp out with the Knights of Columbus activities. One of therequirements for an Eagle Scout is to demonstrate leadershipthrough a service project which benefits the community. For myservice project, I will be beautifying the grounds in front of theAmerican Legion Post #155 in Whippany. They have a grass stripalong the front of its property. There are old, decaying telephonepoles alongside the grass which serve as car parking stops andmark the property line. I plan to remove them and install a vinylsplit rail fence across the front of the property. Mulch will be placedunder the fence to help with grass cutting. The Legion would alsolike fifteen new car stops installed in front of the property whereveterans meet and public events are held. I am asking for a tax-deductible donation so that I can purchase the vinyl split levelfence, cement, mulch, car stops and miscellaneous supplies. With your support we can beautify the American Legion Post#155. Donations are greatly appreciated. All tax-deductibledonations should be made out in the form of checks to “BSA Troop155" and send to: Andrew Gigantino, 5 Knollwood Rd, Whippany,NJ 07981. Thank you for your support and involvement, AndrewGigantino, Troop155

My Dear Friends,

This Sunday, April 15th is the last session of our Religious Formation Program, both PreK-8th and theConfirmation Program, 9th and 10th graders. It has been a great experience for me to visit the programs andshare with our children, parents and catechists. Religious Formation is one of our priorities here at OLM andat every parish of the Universal Church. It is the most powerful way we can spread the good news of theGospel as our Lord commanded us to do as his disciples. Our children are the future of the world and, therefore of the Church. It is a great joy to see them coming to Church and learning their faith.

On behalf of the entire community I would like to thank our children for coming here to our Program. They fill our church with energy and their smiles bring happiness to every one of us. Every time I visit theirclassrooms I feel renewed and encouraged to go on with my mission. We are proud of being able to helpinfluence their future and help them grow embracing the values of the Gospel in their lives. Growing up inour modern world is not always easy. There are many distractions: internet, games, cellphones, sports… they are all good things in moderation. However, they can also become an impediment for the normal andhealthy process of maturing if we don’t give all these goods the place they deserve in our lives. I am sohappy and grateful to see that you, our children here at OLM, know how to put aside other things that may be good for you and make the decision to come to our Religious Formation Program to make your faith in the Lord grow bigger and deeper. We love to have you here. We love to see you growing physicallyand spiritually. May God bless you always and keep you always with Him. May you never walk away fromthe Lord, the One who gave you your lives, the One who loves you unconditionally and even more thanMom and Dad.

I would like to thank our parents for entrusting your children to us. As I always say, it is a privilege to be ableto teach our children our faith. This is your mission as well. Our Program here and all of us are only meant tohelp you on your mission. We are very happy to support you and your children. The best way to teach is byexample. Words are blown by the wind if they are not supported by a worthy way of life. You parents arethe first teachers of your children. Thank you for being here with them. Thank you for coming as a family topass your faith on to your children. Whenever we see a family together at church we have the certaintythat the Kingdom of God is growing in our midst.

To our catechists and to our Coordinators for Religious Formation and Confirmation Program, I have nowords to thank you enough for your dedication during the whole year. You also have a family and work todo, yet you make time for the good work of the Lord. You are doing a challenging job with great love andgenerosity. Thank you for your testimony of faith and for fulfilling your mission as true disciples of Jesusamong all of us. You help us to build up our Parish Family, the Church and the Kingdom in the world.

We are having the 11:00Am Mass dedicated to our families from our ReligiousFormation Program. Afterwards, we will have some sharing at the Parish Center tocelebrate the ending of the Program for this year. May God continue to bless us andour mission here at OLM.
