A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar So many conflicting voices and influences make parenting

difficult. In today’s gospel Jesus encourages parents to

bravely “give testimony” and trust He will give us the

“wisdom” to be good parents. You are not alone in parent-

ing; a loving Father is standing with you.

Liturgy Notes As expected at this time of the Church Year, our Scripture Readings focus around “stay alert”, “be ready” “keep your oil lamps full” and be prepared for the “Second Coming of Christ”. That will indeed, be quite a day.

These readings are very similar to the ones we hear particularly on the First Sunday of Advent. As the very word “Advent” refer to the Second Coming of Christ. In the case of our music this weekend, the same theme follows. As some may initially think of the hymn “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” as a Thanksgiving hymn, they would be right. If others thought of it as a text of an end time message or the imploring the Second Com-ing of Christ call, they would also be correct. This great hymn connects both Thanksgiving and Christ’s return message within the context of this piece. We sing of the Lord “supplying our need”, “corn, harvest & wheat”, then in the final two stanzas it’s clear that the message is of “purification from sin”, “fire”, “angels assisting” and finally harkening the Lord to “quickly come”. While many of us think of “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” (Battle Hymn of the Republic) as a Patriotic song, this one too, has a second message. You may even notice that his hymn is found in the “Second Coming” section of our hymnbook. Written by Julia W. Howe, this text links the judgement of the wicked at the end of the age with the Ameri-can Civil War. Scriptural links to the referral of ‘Judgement” in this song are found in the Old Testament (Isaiah 63) and the New Testa-ment (Revelation 19). The Motet at the 10 AM Eucharist “Never Weather-Beaten Sail” writ-ten by English composer, poet and physician Thomas Campion (1567-1620) echo’s some of the same themes expressed already in this col-umn, namely “O come quickly dearest Lord” in the refrain.

What Gives Us Human Dignity and Worth? Are you a valuable human being? Are you wor-thy of life and rights? If so, why? Is it because of your age? Your appearance? Your size? Your intelligence? Your success in life? The amount of money you have? Your race? Your gender? Your capabilities? Or is it because you are a human being? If you have inherent worth simply because you are a living hu-man and not because of external characteristics, then what of a preborn baby? Abortion is wrong for the same reasons as hu-man rights violations are wrong--- because it victimizes a hu-man being with inherent worth and dignity. ~ Pro-Life Articles

The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the Sacrament of Penance.

What is an Indulgence ? “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punish-ment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain pre-scribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.” “An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.” Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead. ~ Catechism of the Cath-olic Church 1471 The spiritual treasury that the Church draws on in granting an indul-gence is the infinite merits of Christ’s redeeming actions in the sight of God. In 1967, Pope Paul VI, clarified the Church’s teaching on the prac-tices of indulgences (Indulgentiarum Doctrina). Some Means of Gaining a Partial Indulgence:

Praying the Magnificat or Hail Holy Queen Praying the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love and the Creed Making the Sign of the Cross Visit to the Blessed Sacrament Visit to the Cemetery

Conditions for Gaining Plenary Indulgence: Sacrament of Reconciliation Reception of Communion Prayer for the Holy Father, Pope Francis

Some Means of Gaining Plenary Indulgence: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for at least one-

half hour Scripture reading for at least one-half hour Way of the Cross Rosary prayed in a Church or family group or reli-

gious community, etc.
