Holy D[y of th_ @ssumption of th_ Bl_ss_^ Virgin M[ry M[ss S]h_^ul_:

Friday August 14 5:30 PM (Spanish)

7:00 PM

Saturday, August 15 8:00 AM & 12:00 Noon

The mo o on my alma mater’s crest reads, leges sine moribus vanae. It is a phrase ascribed to the first century BC Roman poet, Horace. The phrase translates, laws without morals are useless. It could easily pass as a Scriptural proverb or a maxim coined by one of the Fathers of the Church. What it teaches is that no amount of legisla on or regula on, whether in the area of civics or within the Church really ma ers unless they are promulgated and embraced by a virtuous cons tuency.

This teaching is directly contrary to the false wisdom of modernism, secularism, and socialism, which try to convince us that we can find all of answers, and total fulfillment, through science, technology, and, increasingly, government. But it is a false hope upon which every single socialist regime has foundered.

Legisla on and regula on do not solve the deep seated problems of society any more than science and technology do. Title 39 of the NJ Statutes deals with Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regula on. It is dozens and dozens of pages long. If we were all virtuous, the only regula on we would need is the admoni on to drive safely. We would know not to speed; not to tailgate; not to drive under the influence; to ensure that our vehicles are in good running order; and so on. But we are sinners. And so we need guidance; and enforcement; and, where necessary, correc on. The Chris an virtues do not tell us what is allowed. Rather, they form us into responsible Chris an men and women. People who are prudent, just, temperate and courageous. The Chris an virtues of faith, hope and charity form us for our ul mate happiness, which is friendship with God. Every law and regula on has loopholes that corpora ons pay millions of dollars to lawyers to find for them. And one loophole is no sooner closed than another is found. No amount of regula on can subs tute for the living out of the Chris an virtues. And when we embrace these virtues and live them out and make them habitual, then surely we will make fewer imprudent and reckless choices that contribute to human suffering.

I just finished re-reading Michael Crichton’s 1990 classic novel, Jurassic Park, about an ill-fated a empt to harness the power of gene cs to re-create the epoch of dinosaurs for the amusement of the rich and the enrichment of the investors. As everything begins to go awry, a mathema cian brought in to assess the project comments: “Science can make a nuclear reactor, but it cannot tell us not to build it. Science can make pes cide, but cannot tell us not to use it. . . . . We are witnessing the end of the scien fic era. Science, like other outmoded systems, is destroying itself. As it gains power, it proves itself incapable of handling the power. . . . Gene c power is far more potent than atomic power. And it will be in everyone’s hands. It will be in kits for backyard gardeners. Experiments for schoolchildren. Cheap labs for terrorists and dictators. And that will force everyone to ask the same ques on – What should I do with my power? – which is the very ques on science says it cannot answer.”

Only in the realm of religion can we find answers to these ques ons. That is why good, healthy, orthodox Chris an forma on is so important for our youngsters. That is why we promote the importance of religious educa on. That is why we shake our heads with sadness when our Catholic schools are closed because there ae too few, clergy and laity alike, willing to priori ze and support them. That is why we are saddened when sports takes priority over religious educa on and a endance at Mass.

Science and technology have created what appears to be a new world. But it is in reality a world that presents the same old challenges, only differently packaged. Governments propose to dictate the answers, but they fail miserably. Science can create a new world, but neither science nor government can help us decide what to do with that world, or how to flourish in it.

Only God is the answer.

BACK TO SCHOOL COLLECTION WEEKEND OF AUGUST 15-16

We realize this year is different from other years with the virus and all the restrictions. But we still have needy families that will need school supplies for their children. These charities include

the Catholic Charities, The Ozaman Family shelter and a number of other charities that help families. Whether all the schools open in September or the children will be taught on-line, the needs are the same as any other year, such as pencils, pens, binders, and backpacks. If you are able to contribute to this collection, we thank you.

RCIA & Adult Confirmation Mass – Saturday, Aug 22 at 5:00PM Vigil Mass

Due to COVID-19, the Easter Vigil and Pentecost Sunday Masses could not be celebrated on April 11 and May 31 respectively. As a result, the Sacraments of Initiation for Adults and Adult Confirmations will occur during the 5:00PM Mass on Saturday, August 22. Please be advised there will be 5 Adult Baptisms, 17 Adult Confirmations and 17 Adult First Holy Communions during that Mass which means the Mass will likely be a minimum of 1 hour and 30 minutes. In addition, the 17 RCIA Elect, Candidates and Adult Confirmandi will be joined by their godparents and sponsors as well as family members. Due to the current seating capacity restrictions at Mass, we ask parishioners who regularly attend the 5:00PM Vigil Mass to consider attending Mass instead on Sunday, August 23. Thank you for your understanding and prayerful support of our RCIA Elect, Candidates and Adult Confirmandi.
