WELCOME to Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Parish
January 7, 2018 Epiphany of The Lord
PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT
I read in the Advent Blue Book about a blessing for a Christmas tree that could be a good thing, but I wondered if it would not be better to look at the Christmas tree, or any tree for that matter, as a blessing for us who can see and hear God through the wonderful creation spread all around us, a visible sign of His love for us. Trees fascinate me. I have heard of tree lovers and I am not so sure what that means for other lovers of trees than myself. The life of a tree goes on and on. It can just remain there and make sure that the sap carries life year in and year out. It can be transformed into board and planks and the odd hockey stick, a baseball bat, a canoe, a toothpick. One of them carried the Body of Christ and the first to experience the blood of the saviour of all creation. Most of us know where Maple syrup comes from. The inside wooden structures of our church building carries within itself the secrets of forests, lumberjacks and fine tuned carpenters. One is never alone in an empty church…not counting the angels and the member so the Body of Christ already on the other side of death. This place is one of the many wonderful buildings reflecting God’s presence in our city. It is good to take some time to appreciate it, to give thanks to God in praise for the wonderful gift. Another great gift that never ends could be described as ‘family’. So many different families nowadays. My family is just as different as many others. If trees fascinate me, that includes family trees, with trunks, branches, bark, leaves and the odd bird using it as a home, a good place to live. I cannot go on and on with my family and bore you to death or even worse, lead you to drinking and a slower but more extensive period of dying. For an example, on one branch you can find some French Canadian food and drink, some Swedish colors and the odd India spice and a connection with Mother Theresa’s religious family. Another branch has a reflection of the charism of healing, with nurses and a twig of doctors and a teaching leaf. Others are supported by Justice systems, sports telecommunicators. The stump and the early branches covers aging bark and has seen many a summer to be covered with frost surrounded by a carpet of snow, or sod needing a haircut. The matriarchs and patriarchs can be found in the stories recorded in Sacred Scripture first lived in flesh and blood before the recording by the Spirit of God’s inspiration to a memory that managed to reveal itself in word, music, poetry and the odd discourse. Yes, that is my family in tree language. To be loved and cherished by the eldest type of an acorn having within self a hidden tree.

Catholic Women’s League Now that the busy pace of the Christmas season is behind us, we turn our attention to the New Year and what it will hold for
us. We have for you a perfect opportunity to regroup and reflect. We are pleased to bring you an invitation to attend a Spiritual Presentation on the Power of Prayer, to be held here at OLPH on Thursday, January 11th from 9:30 till noon. Although this invitation is coming to you courtesy of the CWL, you do not need to be a CWL member to attend; rather, all parishioners and their guests are welcome. The facilitator will be our own Mary-Margaret Patterson; a gifted, articulate speaker, and it is with pleasure that we are able to bring her talents to us. Each person attending is asked to bring along their favourite mug or cup. Please plan to attend, bring a friend, and help us to put the word out! Our first Executive Meeting of 2018 will be held on Tuesday, January 9th at 5:30 p.m. in Fr. O Hall. This meeting will be the hand-over of responsibilities, and all outgoing and incoming Executive are invited to attend. See you there!

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in Winnipeg
January 18-25, 2018 City-Wide Ecumenical Worship Service 7:30 p.m., Sun., Jan. 21, 2018 at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg. Note that an Ecumenical Choir is being formed for the city-wide ecumenical worship service. The resources for the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity have been prepared by an ecumenical team from the Caribbean. Today, Caribbean Christians of many different traditions see the hand of God active in the ending of enslavement. The Caribbean ecumenical team chose the song of Moses and Miriam (Exodus 15:1-21) - a song of triumph over oppression - as the motif of the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Please see poster in the church main bulletin board by the main entrance of the church for more information.
