Fourth Sunday of Easter April 21, 2013

This has been a bad week for America: letters containing danger-ous chemicals mailed to our leaders; a terrible explosion in Texas; and most scary of all, a terrorist act in Boston. Sadly, there is much other bad news that has become so normal that it does not get onto the front page: acts of gang violence and random violence in our cities; kidnappings across the border; rapes, and domestic assaults on women; child pornography; incredible cruelty in our prisons, and more. All these things show the face of evil. Our new Pope has reminded us that “calumny”, or repeating malicious lies about people, is also a sign of the presence of evil.

Evil destroys people physically; and even worse, it causes emotional wounds which are so deep and traumatic that it seems they can never be healed—wounds which can destroy individual lives, and which can play out in families through future generations and future centuries.

The readings today speak directly to this reality, not minimizing, but bringing words of hope, comfort and strength. These words were first addressed to the early Christians who were betrayed, tortured and executed for their faith.

In Revelation, it is not just a few, but a great multitude that no one can count, from every nation, race, people and tongue who have survived the terrible encounter with hatred, violence, lies and death. Revelation tells us that God Himself is sheltering them. The Lamb is leading them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. We also hear the words of Jesus: I will give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.

Let us take courage. Let us hide ourselves under the shadow of God’s wings, and cry out to Him day and night—abandoning our-selves to God’s mercy. Let us place all those we love, who have been wounded in the battle, into God’s healing hands. Let us fight evil to our last breaths…especially the evil temptation of making our own ongoing choice for hatred and revenge. That’s how evil gets its power and its pathetic triumphs. In our nation, there has been a great outpouring of good in response to this week’s evil. That is the way to go. Overcome evil with good.

Despite the reality of evil, God is always continuing his GOOD pur-poses for the world and for all human beings. His ways are not our ways. He is completely just, completely merciful, has complete knowledge and COMPLETE LOVE. He has won the victory for love.

To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever. Amen.

CHU ́A NHẬT IV PHỤC SINH- C FOURTH SUNDAY OF TH LNT
