PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT

It just so happened that this past week I have been visiting with death. That might seem strange at first reading. Because I am a priest, one of the many gifts of the priesthood is that when one of our loved ones is either sick or in a stage of life that indicates that life in the body is coming to some difficult stages and loving ones, because they care, are present and sometimes just want someone to pray with them or to bring a presence of support of some kind. I am writing these few words because not everybody would have this type of an experience that I consider a precious gift. I am aware that words cannot reflect the experience adequately. There is a beauty, probably not perceived by those around and about their own business, but the Spirit of God is there and is seen in the eyes, the smile, the quietness, the silence of the person surrounded by care givers and family and friends. The quality of the presence gathered by the sick disciple is also something to be thankful for. Often, one single person, carries and speaks without words, loads and loads of love and respect that sticks to my priesthood. When I get the chance to reflect on the experience I learn how much I am ignorant about God’s love for all of us. There is a line in a French hymn found in the breviary that is quite astounding, if you let it sink in the experience of the moment. It is about the Body of Christ. It goes on to say that my death, and your death, is welcomed in the Body of Christ, therefore we are to be with Him through the death of His Body, to journey in Love with Him during His eternity. That very same elated moment, I find with young people in love and wanting to discuss a marriage ceremony, or holding a baby in my arms, or alone surrounded by silence in the dark sacred space that cannot be contained in the building I have learned to appreciate. I am aware that we are in the midst of the synodal process as an archdiocese. In the world around us we toss around the term ‘neo-evangelisation’ quite a bit, all that is good. I have come to believe that nothing can replace a direct and personal experience of the presence of God, available to each and everyone He created in His own image, which is Love and Life in His eternity. He did say, and I believe, that He would be with us till the end of time. We have to let our own body sink into His and welcome Him in the secrecy of our being.
