Pope Francis, himself, asked Catholics around the world to participate in programs like CRS Rice Bowl to do exactly that: to build a culture of encounter! In his 2017 Lenten message, he says: “Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day. Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love. The word of God helps us to open our eyes to welcome and love life, especially when it is weak and vulnerable... Lent is a favorable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor. The Lord who overcame the deceptions of the Tempter during the 40 days in the desert, shows us the path we must take. May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God's word, be purified of the sin that blinds us and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need... I encourage all the faithful to express this spiritual renewal also by sharing in the Lenten Campaigns promoted by many Church organizations in different parts of the world, and thus to favor the culture of encounter in our one human family... Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and poor. Then we will be able to experience and share to the fullest, the joy of Easter!” ~Pope Francis

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE LENT SPECIAL THIS

YEAR? IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO SIGN UP FOR THE SMALL

GROUP FAITH SHARING GROUPS… the program is in both Eng-

lish and Spanish and sign up sheets are in the vestibules of both

OLPH and St Philip Benizi. The small groups gather weekly for six

sessions to share their personal experiences of Jesus Christ and grow

together in their faith and pray. Check it out and sign up...THE

JOURNEY/EL CAMINO ...Part I explores Jesus and his way of life:

You view Jesus through Mary's experience ~ her openness to God.

The experience of the women who suffered for years from hemor-

rhages and finally sought healing from Jesus sheds light on our own

need for healing . Friends brought a paralyzed man to Jesus for heal-

ing, but Jesus changes the focus of healing to forgiveness and ex-

plores the mercy of God. When Jesus meets the Samaritan women,

she opens her heart to him ~ and this helps us to see that we should

trust him. Philip the Apostle helps us to see that every act of Jesus is

really showing us what God is like ~ thus we can explore our own

sense of God. The Centurion, who stood at the foot of the cross as

Jesus is dying, gives us insight into the ways salvation comes into

our lives, even in the midst of crisis. Part 2 (My Encounter with the

Community of Jesus) will be offered in the fall ~ and explores Jesus

and his community.

The Eucharist is: Jesus truly present - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity! At the moment of Consecration, during the Mass, the "gifts" of bread and

wine are transformed (transubstantiated) into the actual Body and Blood of

Christ, at the Altar. This means that they are not only spiritually

transformed, but rather are actually (substantially) transformed into the Body

and Blood of Christ. The elements retain the appearance of bread and wine,

but are indeed the actual Body and Blood of Christ. This is what is meant by

Real Presence: the actual, physical presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Christ

instituted this Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in order to remain with

mankind until the end of time (Jn. 14:18). Pope John Paul II in one of his

homilies said, “It is pleasant to spend time with Him, to lie close to His

breast like the Beloved Disciple (cf. Jn 13:25) and to feel the infinite love

present in His heart ... If, in our time Christians must be distinguished by the

“art of prayer”, how can we not feel a renewed need to spend time in

spiritual conversation, in silent adoration, in heartfelt love before Christ

present in the Most Holy Sacrament?”

El Santísimo Sacramento es: Jesús realmente presente - Cuerpo,

Sangre, Alma y Divinidad!

Knight’s of Columbus Council #3154 Here Ye Here Ye!! Let it be

known that the Annual St. Paddy’s Day Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner

is coming ! Mark your calendar for Sunday March 12th 2017. Wine and

Beer bar opens at 3:30 and meal starts at 4PM. Come and take the

chance of seeing that ol’ Irishman Pete O’Chiappetta doing a jig. Let’s

not forget that there is a raffle drawing throughout for roughly 19 prizes,

including a nights stay at the Village Green and maybe an oil change

from D&D Automotive. Speak with a Knight for tickets or prior to Mass

on Saturday and Sunday we will be selling. Thanks!

LENT IS HERE...ASH WEDNESDAY IS THIS WEEK... fasting and

abstinence regulations: All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain (not

eat) from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

All Catholics between ages 18 and 59, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and

Good Friday. To fast means to eat only one full meal. Two smaller meals

may also be taken for good heath but together they should not equal a full

meal. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including

coffee, tea, milk and fruit juices are allowed. Those with chronic illness or

other severe health issues and pregnant women are exempt from this

regulation.

HOW TO FAST DURING LENT … Fast from judging others, apparent

darkness, pessimism, dwelling on illness, words that pollute, anger, worry,

unrelenting pressures, negatives, complaining, hostility, bitterness, anxiety

and self centeredness. Feast on Christ dwelling in others, the reality of light,

optimism, God's healing power, phrases that purify, patience, Divine

providence, unceasing prayer, positives, appreciation, tolerance and peace,

forgiveness, hope and a silent loving heart.
