From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Happy Pentecost! Today’s Solemnity commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Our Lady and the apostles in the Cenacle. It celebrates the “birth” and the first preaching of the Gospel of the nascent Church. We might also call it the principal feast of the Holy Spirit. During my elementary school days, I learned a Lenten hymn of three verses, each addressed to a Person of the Blessed Trinity. The third verse of course, called upon the Holy Spirit with these words: “Holy Spirit, grieved and tried, oft forgotten and defied, now we mourn our stubborn pride, we beseech Thee hear us! For some reason, that hymn I committed to memory. Perhaps it was due to the fact that we students attended Mass and sang that hymn every day during Lent throughout my grammar years! I recalled that verse as I read one of Pope Francis’ recent daily homilies during which he stated that “the Holy Spirit is always to some extent, the unknown of our faith.” As we celebrate Pentecost, I thought I would share with you how the Holy Father explains this:

Now so many Christians do not know what the Holy Spirit is, what the Holy Spirit is like. And sometimes we hear: But I’m doing just fine with the Father and the Son, because I pray to the Our Father to the Father. I receive communion with the Son, but with the Holy Spirit I don’t know what to do. Or they say, ‘The Holy Spirit is the dove, the one who gives us the seven gifts.” But this way the poor Holy Spirit is always last and does not find a good place in our lives. Instead the Holy Spirit is ‘God active in us, God who reminds us,’ of all that Jesus said (Jesus’ promise in Scripture) who ‘awakens our memory,’ When the Holy Spirit is ignored, a dangerous slope appears. A Christian without a memory is not a true Christian. That memory which comes from the heart…is a grace of the Holy Spirit. Let us ask for the grace of memory in order to be persons who do not forget the road we have traveled, the graces in our lives, the forgiveness of our sins, that we do not forget that we were slaves and the Lord saved us!

With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Frè-m ak Sè-m yo,

Nou ta kab rele'l tou fèt prensipal LespriSen an. Lè-m mwen te nan klas primè, mwen te konn chante yon kantik TanKarèm ki gen 3 vèsè, chak vèsè yo adrese a yon pèsonn de la Sent Trinité. 3e vèsè a, bien sur, fè apèl a LespriSen, aflije epi te eseye, souvan abandonen epi defye, kounye a nan lapenn fyète ak tèt di nou an, nou sipliye W, tanpri koute lapriyè! Pou yon rezon kèlkonk, mwen memorize kantik sa a. Petèt sa rive lè fèt ke nou menm elèv nou asiste Lamès e chante kantik sa a chak jou pandan TanKarèm epitou pandan tout klas primè mwen yo. Mwen raple m yon pasaj mwen teli nan youn nan dènye prèck ke Pap Francis yo, kote li deklare ke "LespriSen an, nan yon sèten mezi, toujou enkoni nan lafwa nou". Kòm n-ap selebre LaPankot, mwen kwè li ta toujou bon si mwen ta pataje avèk w kijan Pap la eksplike LespriSen an:

Kounye a anpil kretyen pa konnen kisa LespriSen an ye, a kisa Li sanble. Pafwa nou tande: Men tout bagay mache byen pou mwen avèk Papa a ak Pitit la, paske lè map lapriyè Papa a, mwen di Papa nou ki nan syèl la, mwen kominyen avèk Pitit la, men ak LespriSen an mwen pa konn kisa pou'm fè. Oswa yo di "LespriSen an se yon kolonb, sila ki bannou 7 don yo". Nan fason sa a LespriSen an pa manifeste nan nou kidonk Li pa kap jwenn yon bon plas nan lavi nou. An nou mande memwa lageas pou kapab vinn des moun ki pap bliye wout nap gen vwayaje ansanm nan, anpil lagras nan lavi nou, padon pou peche nou yo, ke nou pap bliye nou te esklav e Granmèt la te libere nou.

Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. Gervasio

News From Your Parish School Spring is in the air, really! The recent rain and chill hasn't dampened our plans at Our Lady of Sorrows School. Our school trips have been in full bloom. In addition to the many exciting trips that each of our grade levels have experienced, our upper middle school students enjoyed a very unique day! By special invitation, our students in Grades 7 and 8 attended Law Day at the Mercer County Court House. The students experienced mock trials, explored the justice system, and met the people that are leading the court system in Mercer County. A most special thank you is extended to the Mercer County Courts from the students at OLS. They felt very special taking the seat of a prosecutor, or a jury member, witness, or defense attorney! This was truly a vivid example of law at work—Law Day at Mercer County Court! Our Second Grade students are no strangers to the legislative branch of the NJ government! While sharpening their written skills (read handwriting as well as letter writing), our Second Grade students penned letters to NJ Legislator, Senator Linda Greenstein. Linda Greenstein represents the 14th legislative district. The Second Grade students asked for her support for the many public school students educated in private schools such as Our Lady of Sorrows. As students, all the services offered in a public school should continue to be available while children attend a private school. These services include school nursing, speech development and special education instruction for students with differentiated needs. Private schools decrease the general costs of public education by teaching large numbers of students. Speech, individual instructional, and nursing services should be maintained for all students. The children's letters asked Senator Greenstein to remember them when voting for school budgets. Our youngsters are reminding us to be advocates for education and to ask our representatives to continue to support private school services. Isn't it time for your children to "Try OLS on for Size"? Just like a good pair of shoes, it's fun to just try them on for size. On Thursday, June 7, Hamilton Township schools are closed for a professional development day. OLS has planned a special "Shadow Day." Simply call the school office to schedule your child's appointment. I promise, they'll enjoy a great day being shadowed by a current Our Lady of Sorrows student. We'll even treat them to lunch! Find out just how nice a school day can be. We offer financial assistance as well as scholarship programs. Call the office (587-4140) to schedule your child's "Shadow Day."

Lord, how are you calling me to follow you? God created each one of us for a particular calling as a way to follow Him. Through the Sacrament of Baptism we become a child of God and thus we are called to live in holiness through the love of God and neighbor! It is important to remember that our true vocation does not come from the world, or from ourselves, but rather an invitation directly from God to follow Him! If you are interested in learning more about a vocation to the priesthood, join Rev. Msgr. Ralph Stansley for this month’s discernment meeting, Sunday, May 22, at Our Lady of Good Counsel (137 Upper Ferry Road, West Trenton) from 4 – 6 p.m., as he shares his experiences of the priesthood and leads a discussion about discernment and vocations. For further information and to register, please contact the Diocese of Trenton Office of Vocations ([email protected]; 406-7449. It would be great to see you and hear how the Lord is working in your life!

Come Celebrate a Special Anniversary Liturgy

for Married Couples

IF WE LOVE EACH OTHER, GOD LIVES IN US, AND HIS LOVE

HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO FULL EXPRESSION THROUGH US.

1 John 4:12

In his book, Loving for a Lifetime, Richard Johnson, PhD, explains that sacred unity flows from togetherness as we more fully understand that the love relationship between marriage partners is a reflection of the love relationship between Jesus and all the children of God.

On June 4, there will be a special liturgy at the 5:00 p.m. Mass to honor the sacrament of marriage for couples who are celebrating anniversaries of 1 year, multiples of 5 years, or more than 50 years, during 2016.

Following will be a Wine and Cheese Reception for the married couples participating in this liturgy.

All married couples wishing to attend this liturgy, please complete the information below and drop the form off at the rectory office or email the information to [email protected] by Friday, May 27. If you don’t receive confirmation , please call Barbara at 587-0759. Names: ___________________ and _____________________ __________________________________
