Easter Sunday

EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 16, 2017 VOL. 63 NO. 15

SHEPHERD’S VOICE “You restored our Life”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the pain and sadness brought about by the death of our loved ones: father, mother or son or daughter - may one find great comfort in the Resurrection story. The big boulder of stone has been rolled away, and Mary of Magdala tells us that the tomb is empty. In due time, the light of the resurrection will scatter the darkness of pain and fill ones heart with the light of hope and new life. The resurrection story challenges us to transcend every experience of separation and sad-ness, pain and loss. Yes, death does not have the final say! How many of us are still stuck and suffering from the sting of death? When the other disciple who runs with Peter to the tomb peers into the sepulcher, he sees and believes. Mary Magdalene is overcome with grief and sorrow over the disappearance of Jesus’ body. Her heart cries out to see Jesus in her desire to take hold of his corpse. She gives voice to the sentiments of people who have lost a loved one or are buried in the darkness of pain. “Where is Jesus? Where is my Teacher?” The eyes of Mary Magdalene will later open to the truth that Jesus lives in all his disciples. She will continue to see Je-sus in the Apostles, in the women who have rushed to the tomb with her, and in herself. The “seeing”, the opening of one’s eyes of faith , does not happen in an instant. In fact, the Gospel is precise in saying that Mary Magdalene and the Apostles also not yet understand the Scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead. In due time, Mary Magdalene will receive something much greater than what she has pleaded for. She will not get back a corpse; she will experience new life! Jesus will restore Magdalene’s life; she will see and believe. We will see Jesus not only in the resurrection on the last day. We can see Jesus even now in one another if we use our eyes of faith and start caring for one another. If, like Mary Magdalene, we choose to walk by faith and follow the exam-ple of Jesus, he will reveal himself to us as the risen Christ. It is interesting to note that Peter, John and Mary were the first witnesses of the Risen Christ! Would it not be because even if Peter denied Jesus, Jesus forgave him after Peter wept bitterly? For John, well he is the one who has the title as the disciple who Jesus loved, and Mary because she loved Jesus so much so that in the end it is truly love that makes one see and believe in the Risen Christ. We have to believe that our short life here on earth if we live by faith in Jesus, try to follow his path, then death will be going back in the infinite love and mercy of God, the author of Life. In his own way, God will make us, and all those who have lost a loved ones, understand that our beloved continues to live in us as we strive together to follow the risen Christ. Happy Easter to Everyone! Alleluia! God Bless, Fr. Roni

2017 E E M C The Easter collection directly funds the diocesan Vocations Office, the education and formation of seminarians, and the Permanent Diaconate Office. These offices provide a benefit not only to our diocese but the entire church by informing, educating, establishing relationships with, and placing in service those who want to continue the teachings of God’s word. These offices foster discernment to all vocations, whether it be to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, conse-crated single life, or marriage. All are taught that God has a plan for every life he creates and in order to fulfill that plan, they must listen for His voice. Our Lady of the Rosary’s quota for 2016 is $8,975. Please be generous.

A special thanks goes to all who: ♦ made this Lent so meaningful. ♦ gave to the 40 Cans for Lent drive ♦ gave of their time to clean palms to get them ready for Palm Sunday ♦ gave of their time to set up the different environments during the Triduum ♦ give of their time and musical talent at masses ♦ continue to come and hear the word of God

Also let us thank our priests, Father Roni and Father Ding. Thanks for your guidance and devotion to our parish. We are indeed a fortunate, vibrant parish. For these reasons, we need to continue to thank God for our blessings.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Easter is nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was com-plete, on the Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the as-tronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The traditional rule is that Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles be-tween March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mind-bending exceptions and charts with “golden numbers,” “dominical letters,” and “epacts” measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually over-rode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
