Eye to eye with Jesus 2

In the Breaking of the Bread

Father of all creation, on the road of our daily life, whether at home or at work, may we help our families and others to know of your love and compassion. May our hearts burn with the zeal of those who walked the road with Jesus, so that when our days come to a close, our eyes will be opened. In our common acts of sharing and feasting, may we see the Risen Lord in one another. May the peace and blessing of your Son rest on the tables where we gather. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

In the time between Easter and the Ascension, Jesus appeared to his disciples in the burial garden, in closed rooms, and by lake shores. It’s tempting to view those stories as mere throwbacks to Scriptural times. It was easier for them, we tell ourselves; they actually saw Jesus himself.

We often forget that more than once, the disciples failed to recognize Jesus until his actions revealed his divinity. Why was that? Were their minds clouded? Or is it possible that he wore a different face than the man they had known? Maybe, just maybe, it was as difficult for them to recognize the face of Jesus as it is for us today.

Modern life keeps us in motion and constantly stimulated. The irony is that with so much to see, we miss a lot. We avoid eye contact with people holding signs at street corners; we avoid eye contact with peo-ple who exhibit signs of disability or mental illness; we avoid eye contact with people going through tough times, because we don’t know what to say or we don’t want to get involved.

Eye contact invites communication, and communication leads to relationship. However fleeting, we are, in that moment, responsible for honoring the dignity of another person. We are compelled to act, but we don’t know how we can take on another burden when we’re already so heavy-laden that we fell we’re tread-ing water. We’re afraid the weight of one more thing will pull us under. If we don’t notice people, we think, at least we’re not being rude.

So we barricade ourselves behind our ear buds. We bury our faces in our “smart” devices. And all too often, we miss the face of Christ walking by us on the street – or even in our own homes. Social media brings us into contact with people long lost to us, but too often we rush through online interactions in such haste that we forget or fail to consider the dignity of those on the other end of our words.

Jesus Christ is still appearing in our world, every, every moment. But if we do not consciously seek his face among those we encounter, we run the risk of not recognizing him at all. ©J.S. Paluch Co.

Come to learn about the Catholic Church

Do you hear the Lord calling you to membership in his Church and life as a disciple of Jesus? You are invited to begin the journey of faith toward Baptism through RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.

An invitation is also extended to anyone from an-other faith tradition who is interested in Catholicism, or Catholics who wish to return to active membership and receive their First Communion and Confirmation.

Come learn about the Catholic faith in a comfort-able environment where questions are welcome! At our Inquiry sessions – Wednesdays at 7 p.m. from May 3 to June 14 – participants explore the basic teachings of Catholicism. No commitment is asked during Inquiry. However, this series does provide a foundation for the full RCIA process that follows, if you choose to continue.

For details, contact Kathy Steighner, RCIA Co-ordinator, at (909) 626-3596, ext. 4221.

Our Lady of Fatima novena

Parishioners are encouraged to begin a novena to Our Lady of Fatima on May 4, nine days before the centennial of her first appear-ance on May 13, 1917. The prayers are available online at wafusa.org.

One hundred years ago, Our Lady appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal. Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta were pasturing sheep in the Cova de Iria where Our Lady appeared six times to them in 1917. During those troubled times, World War I raged in Europe, the Catho-lic Church was being persecuted in Portugal, and Vladimir Lenin was planning the Communist Revolution in Russia.

L'Osservatore Romano, the official publication of the Vatican, explains the distinction between the public revelation of Scripture and Church Teaching, and the private revelation of apparitions or visions of the saints. Public revelation commands our faith for all time and is fulfilled in the mystery of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Private revelations such as Fatima and Lourdes are sometimes recognized by the Church. Such messages can be a genuine help in understanding and living the Gospel in a particular moment in time. They are an aid which is offered, but which the faithful are not obligated to use. Both Fatima and Lourdes honor Mary as a model and help for Christians.

Outreach Expo May 28 ‘Cry of the poor, cry of the earth’

Responding to Pope Francis who challenges us to hear “the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth,” OLA will host an exposition of out-reach ministries and organizations on Sunday, May 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

This exciting, first-time event will bring together multiple groups from OLA and the local community which engage volunteers to serve the poor and promote the care of the environment. These include St. Vincent De Paul Society, Stephen Ministry, Crossroads Inc., Fair Trade Ministry, Uncommon Good, Jeff Domond Foundation for Haiti, Get On the Bus, Immigration Rights Team, Knights of Columbus, Just Act & Just Faith, Sustainable Claremont, Sierra Club, Catholic Relief Ser-vices, East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless, Inland Val-ley Hope Partners, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and more.

The inspiration for this event comes from the acclaimed book by Pope Francis, Laudato Si - On Care of Our Common Home – which has been the topic of study groups and workshops at OLA.
