Help the Homeless Did you know that 3,892 men and women slept on NY's city streets on the night of February 6, 2017?
These are men and women, just like us, but lacking the opportunities and security, family and support that we have been blessed with. Mychal's Message is now accepting donations for a new project - solar foam ridge sleeping mats - named in honor of NYPD Det. Steven McDonald who died in January of this year. A donation of $25.00 will provide a sleeping mat for a man or woman who lives on the streets. These mats will be handed out on the breadline on the morning of September 10th.
Donations can be mailed to Mychal's Message, PO Box 6404, Lancaster, PA 17607 or online at www.mychalsmessage.org or at Mychal's Message Facebook page.
May God bless you for your generosity.

Our gospel reading for this Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time presents us with the fundamental ques on for the life of faith. The Lord Jesus asks his disciples at Caesarea Philippi: “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” (Ma hew 16:13). The disciples answer Jesus with something of a rote answer; they report the musings of the crowds to Jesus which he is surely aware of: “Some say John the Bap st, others Elijah, s ll others Jeremiah or one of the prophets” (16:14-15). Jesus will not accept an answer that is respec ul but non-commi al on the part of the disciples. Jesus con nues to educate the disciples through the revela on of what his messianic mission involves. Jesus is the messiah who will liberate his people from the power of sin and death through his own willingness to suffer and die for them. It is noteworthy that Ma hew includes Jeremiah amidst the naming of the prophe c figures so central in the history of Israel. Jeremiah knew the pain of rejec on as he served as the L ’ own messenger. Jeremiah, too, and more importantly, announces a Messiah who will suffer rejec on. Jesus is intent on ensuring that his disciples have a more profound insight into his person and his mission than what the crowds are somewhat casually a aching to him. And so Jesus is more insistent in his ques on and his tone as he proceeds: “But who do you say that I am” (16:15). There is the central ques on. Jesus draws the disciples into personal reflec on on what it means to be his follower. The ques on of the personal iden ty of Jesus should not be just a ma er of academic concern for the disciples. The iden ty of Jesus and the rela onship of the disciples to him will have drama c consequences for their future and the degree to which they themselves are willing to stand by Jesus through his Passion, Death, and Resurrec on and beyond. “Who do you say that I am?” Our answer to the ques on is the key to interpre ng our life, experience, and our future. Peter’s confession of faith follows this intense ques oning by Jesus: “”You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (16:16-17). Peter confesses Jesus not as a Messiah invested with poli cal power or military strength but as the Son of God who is the source of salva on, as the One who is the key to a share in divine life. Peter has insight into who Jesus is, what his presence in the world means for the future. Peter, for all of his failings, is always open to the powerful grace of God that draws us into communion, friendship, with him. Peter understands in his heart the importance of living his life closely united to the divine life of Jesus himself. Jesus charges Peter with the work of the Church and promises that the Church is the privileged means in this world as the mediator of salva on: “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” (16:18). The Church is called together by Christ as the remnant of his chosen people; the Lord Jesus entrusts care for this Church that is completely his own to Peter and to Peter’s successors. The Catechism of the Catholic Church notes:
The word ‘Church’ (La n ecclesia, from the Greek ek-ka-lein, to ‘call out of’) means a convoca on or an assembly. It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose. Ekklesia is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was established by God as his holy people. By calling itself ‘Church,’ the first community of Chris an believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the Church, God is ‘calling together’ his people from all the ends of the earth. The equivalent Greek term Kyriake, from which the English word Church and the German Kirche are derived, means ‘what belongs to the Lord’ (751).
We belong to the Lord. Peter understood that truth deeply. Peter is filled with the grace and blessing of faith. The Lord entrusts a great deal of authority to Peter. But Peter’s authority is established as a result of his own confession of faith and his own realiza on of his u er dependence upon Christ. As members of the Church we are privileged to be gathered around Peter’s Successor, today, the Holy Father, Pope

T We welcome Sister Maryann Schaeffer of the Salesian Sisters who will speak to us about the missionary work of the Church. Our second collec on this week will help to support the Church’s missionary ac vity. Missionaries spend their lives in service to the Gospel and a end to the needs of the poor and the suffering. We pray for all missionaries and we welcome Sister Maryann who will speak to us in the name of all missionaries who o en carry out their ministry in distant and remote places. Sister Maryann will tell us of the powerful work that so many missionaries carry out all over the world in the name of Christ and his Church. We are glad to have Sister Maryann with us. Thank you for your always generous support to the vital work of evangeliza on.
F F S M In a short me we will begin our new faith forma on year. It is a blessing to have so many young people in our faith forma on program who learn about the Lord and his Church through the efforts of our catechists. It is a great gi to be able to assist parents in their role of handing on their own faith in the Lord and his Church to their children. Please check out our “Faith Forma on Corner” in the bulle n for news on our faith forma on program on pages 7 and 8. Our faith forma on is important and I am very proud and grateful for the work of Ms. Trish Filiaci in making this complex program run as well as it does. With that said, there is no subs tute for Sunday Mass. I ask parents to remember that the greatest gi that you can give your children in handing on the faith is to accompany them to Mass so that they know what a great responsibility and gi Sunday Mass is for us. The Lord gives us his own Body and Blood to strengthen us through the Eucharist. The greatest gi of faith that can be given to your children is Sunday Mass. Thank you for entrus ng your children to our faith forma on program and for allowing us to assist you in handing on the faith to your children. Thank you for your faithfulness that you made at the me that they were bap zed to hand on the faith to your children.
V L M O In seeking to honor departed loved ones, family and friends o en look for ways to honor the sacred memory of the departed through prayer. There is no be er way to remember our loved ones than by commending them to God’s mercy. One opportunity to remember departed loved ones is through the perpetual memorial candles that are in our shrine area at the entrance of the church. The Shrines of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Jude Thaddeus, and Thérèse of Lisieux all have candles that burn in perpetual memory of the departed as well as candles burning for other inten ons as a sign of prayer. Mrs. Beverly Cuccinelli can provide you with more informa on with this opportunity. Mrs. Cuccinelli can be contacted at the parish office. Thank you, as always, for your generosity. A number of parishioners have already taken advantage of this opportunity to designate these candles as perpetual memorials for departed loved ones. To say that the candles are “perpetual” is to say that they will remain designated as such as long as Our Lady of the Holy Angels remains here . . . and we pray that is a long, long, long me. With God’s help, it will be so!
P M C Thank you for your generosity in the parish maintenance collec on that helps us to a end to so many of the ongoing maintenance needs of our parish buildings. As you know, care for our parish buildings is an ongoing project. Just

trying to keep up with the small things is a major ongoing project. Your generosity in the Parish Maintenance Collec on helps us to keep our parish building and grounds in good repair. Thank you!
S C A gentle reminder: we rely upon your generosity throughout the year in order to meet our budget. This summer we have seen a significant drop off in our collec on. Significant to the point that I am greatly concerned; a loss of more than two or three thousand dollars of what we have budgeted cannot be sustained. I ask you to please remember that we rely upon your ongoing support to provide all that we expect from our parish. Thank you.
Backpack Project Thank You The Justice and Peace and Integrity of Creation committee (JPIC) would like to thank everyone who donated in any way to the backpack project for Syrian Refugee students. At the picnic held for them and their families on August 13th, our Community at Holy Angels, along
with several other congregations, was able to present the students with 75 completely filled backpacks!! It was an amazing response of love and generosity and your help meant more than you could know. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Faith Formation Corner We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend Rachel's Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild, and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer a supportive, confidential, and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release, and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions and begin the process of restoration, renewal, and healing. For more information, contact Marie at 973-377-1004 x-425. All calls will be held in strictest confidence.
THE CURSILLO METHOD Written by Pope John Paul II ~ July 29, 2000 Cursillo World Conference held at the Vatican
The Cursillo method aims at helping to transform in a Christian Way, the environments where people live and work through the involvement of "new men and women" who have become such from their encounter with Christ. This is a goal of the three day "little course" on Christianity, in which a team of priests and lay people, supported by prayer and sacrifices of the movement's other members, communicate the fundamental truths of the Christian faith in an especially "living way." If you are looking for such an experience, the next weekend dates are:
192nd Men's Cursillo September 28-October 1, 2017 176th Women's Cursillo October 26-29, 2017
For more information, please contact Lorraine and Bob Oechslin 973-227-4770.
Children’s Books Needed! We are searching for children's books, appropriate for young children, related to:
God, Creation, Trinity, the Holy Spirit, Jesus, Lent, Easter, Advent, Christmas, Prayer, Discipleship, Forgiveness, Mass, etc...
If you have books at home that you would like to donate, related to any area of our faith, our Faith Formation Sunday Morning program would put them to very good use! All book donations can be dropped off at the Parish Ministry Center.
Thank You!
