July 12th, 2020 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We come together on this 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Scriptures for this day speaks of the seed which the Lord sows upon the earth. This seed is the word of God. In the Gospel Acclamation we sing, “The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower. All who come to him will have life forever.”

Prayer is also the willingness to listen; it is the suitable time for meeting with God. Today, the Sunday of the ‘sower’, we would like to open our hearts to listen to the word of Jesus using the words of St. John Chrysostom that we too may become docile and willing listeners of the saving Word: “Grant, Lord, that I may listen attentively and remember

constantly your teaching, that I may put it into practice forcefully and courageously, despising riches and avoiding the worries of a worldly life… Grant me your strength and that I may meditate on your words putting down deep roots and purifying me of all worldly perils” (St. John Chrysostom, A Commentary on the Gospel according to Matthew 44:3-4).

Let us listen to our Lord Jesus because he can show us the right direction and he is the one who will never leave us alone. His commandments and teaching will lead us to true happiness and one day to the eternal life in heaven. In our busy way of acting, which leads to exterior concerns, we feel the need to stop and calm down in silence… at such a time we become receptive to the

fire of the Word… PRAY MORE WORRY LESS!!! What is the state of our heart? Is our heart open to receiving the words of Jesus or are we hard of heart and a source of

grief to Jesus? We like to think of ourselves as good people and in that sense we are the fertile soil that received the seed and produced much fruit. But since none of us is yet a saint we each have areas in our heart that are in need of spiritual cardiac surgery. Let’s compare ourselves to the people in the parable to see where we stand.

The first type of person is this one: “The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart.”

- This seed unfortunately doesn’t even get a chance to sprout because it didn’t land on soil. There was a lack of understanding and the evil one stole away the word of God. Do we ever reject part of the message of the Gospel because we do not understand it? Whenever we reject part of the message of the Gospel, to use the words of Jesus today, the evil one has stolen the word from our heart.

The second type of person is this one: “The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.”

-Have we ever been moved in our heart by God through a good experience in Confession or at Mass or in private prayer but we quickly went back to our old way of life because we could not see beyond some temporary difficulty or disappointment?

The third type of person is this one: “The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.”

-Are there times when we are too busy to pray? Have we missed Mass because we were too busy or made up some other excuse? Are we too busy to read the Bible?

Finally the fourth type of person is this one: “….the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

Thanks be to God that we each in many ways hear the word, understand it and bear fruit. There is some of each of these four types of person in us. We could be all four of these persons at once, or predominantly one of these types of person for a certain time of life. Let us do some cardiac surgery on our spiritual hearts so that misunderstanding and prejudice, or disappointment and the cross, or worldly anxiety and the lure of riches will not render our hearts unfertile soil for Jesus’ words, so that we do not grieve Jesus.

THANK YOU!!! I am so grateful to the volunteers who are assisting me and our parish each Sunday, following all the Masses, in the work of sanitizing our church building in accordance with diocesan protocols during this time of pandemic. These wonderful parishioners do this task with joy for the love of our church and I thank God for the labor they perform with great humility.

MORE MASSES ARE COMING BACK: NEXT WEEKEND: JULY 18/19 SATURDAY: 7PM (OUTDOOR) SUNDAY: 9:30AM (OUTDOOR) 10:45AM AND 12:15PM (INDOOR) I know some of us would like me to the keep 10am (outdoor) mass but with having 10:45am (indoor) it is almost impossible. I do not want to have two masses almost at the same time. I would like us to go back to what we had before if possible. PLEASE BE PATIENT AND UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS NOT EASY.

.PRAY DAILY.

.PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR PROTECTION AND HELP.

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. BISHOP IS ASKING US TO PRAY A ROSARY DAILY TO MARY OUR MOTHER

From Fr. Javier TEACHING FROM THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH - THE SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH - The Sacrament of Matrimony TEACHING FROM THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH My dear brothers and sisters, let us continued our learning from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. According to our catechism "From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which by its very nature is perpetual and exclusive; furthermore, in a Christian marriage the spouses are strengthened and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and the dignity of their state by a special sacrament." Also the consent by which the spouses mutually give and receive one another is sealed by God himself. From their covenant arises "an institution, confirmed by the divine law, . . . even in the eyes of society." The covenant between the spouses is integrated into God's covenant with man: "Authentic married love is caught up into divine love." Thus the marriage bond has been established by God himself in such a way that a marriage concluded and consummated between baptized persons can never be dissolved. This bond, which results from the free human act of the spouses and their consummation of the marriage, is a reality, henceforth irrevocable, and gives rise to a covenant guaranteed by God's fidelity. The Church does not have the power to contravene this disposition of divine wisdom. God bless you.

CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD COLLECTION FOR THE POOR

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted those living in poverty the most and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson's 3 Food Pantries (Father English Center, Paterson; Hope House, Dover; and Partnership for Social Services, Franklin) are giving out more food than ever before. Most months, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson gives out food to 5,000 - 7,000 people at their 3 food pantries. In April of 2020, this number practically doubled, as they helped over 11,000 individuals who are feeling the direct economic impact of COVID-19. Bishop Serratelli has authorized a Catholic Charities Diocesan-wide food collection in all parishes. This year, the drive has gone virtual, and you can shop online and have items directly shipped to Catholic Charities Food Pantries.
