Thoughts From Fr. Tom

A man approaches Jesus in the Gospel today and asks: Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? That is an important question for all of us to reflect on. The man is initially very enthusiastic and reverent when he comes to Jesus and he is quick to respond that he has followed the commandments from his youth. But then Jesus says: You are lacking in one thing. Go sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. This one thing is too much for the man so he went away sad, for he had many possessions. After the man walks away, Jesus instructs his disciples by saying: How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of heaven. What one thing might Jesus say we are lacking in that keeps us from following him fully? What “wealth” are we holding on to that causes us to turn away from Jesus? The month of October in the Catholic Church is designated as Respect Life Month. This is a time for us to remember the dignity of human life and our call to protect the gift of life God has shared with us. In his statement for Respect Life Month, Cardinal Sean O’Malley said: Our worth is based not on our skills or levels of productivity. Rather, we discover our worth when we discover our true identity found in the unchangeable, permanent fact that we are created in God’s image and likeness and called to an eternal destiny with him. We live in a world where the lives of some are valued more than others. We see around us how often life is thought to be disposable and cheap. Yet, we are called to a higher standard. One which invites us to respect the gift of all life. The month of October is a good time for all of us to educate ourselves on the important life issues of our time. What can we do to end abortion? What should we know about the plight of immigrants and refugees around the world? How can we respond to the needs of the poor and vulnerable? Do we value the presence of the elderly and the suffering? What are our attitudes about criminals and the death penalty? These are all issues that need our attention and reflection. Let’s pray for the strength to see God’s presence in the lives of all. Please join us for our parish Respect Life Evening this Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. As October is also one of the months dedicated to our Blessed Mother, we will honor her for the life she gave to us all through her Son, Jesus, by praying the Rosary. There will also be time for reflection and representa-tives from various groups to share resources on respect life issues. All are welcome to join us. Many Blessings!

STEWARDSHIP

The phrase in today’s psalm, “May you see your children’s children,” is really a prayer for along life. The good steward knows that everyday is a gift from God, to be lived with joy and thanksgiving. “May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives!” - Stewardship by the Book

YOUTH MINISTRY

If you have a child in the Second Grade or older who would like to prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist but you missed the parent meetings on October 1st and 3rd, please contact Jo Engert, [email protected].

Our first parent and child gathering is Thursday, October 29, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and/or Saturday, October 31, 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

God’ Love This week 100 young people of our parish began preparing for Reconciliation. Please keep them in your prayers in the weeks ahead as they prepare

their hearts. This week, they reflected on Baptism, which marks us a belonging to Jesus Christ, Son of

God. One of the central images the writers of Sacred Scripture used to describe God’s love for His people was the image of God as the shepherd of His people. How are we as a parish helping children to grow in

a deep love for God?

Irish Saints evangelized Ireland, England and Scotland, but also the Continent. Their impact on history is a story that must be told! The vast majority of these saints lived during the 4th—10th centuries, a period in which Ireland was known as the “land of saints and schol-

ars” — it produced many saintly missionaries after the conversion of the isle by the great St. Patrick.

St. Michael High School Update

In early September, another milestone was achieved as preparation continues for site work at the Lee’s Summit site for St. Michael the Archangel High School. The project received a pledge that secures the Loan Reserve Fund requirement for the tax exempt bonds through the entire term of the loan, if needed. This reserve pledge allows all additional gifts to be used to drive down debt, enhance phase one development, and build a scholar-ship fund. Work continues on final bond paperwork, easement acquisition and planning for earthwork later this fall. The site is restricted as the contractor secures it and prepares to move in heavy equipment sometime late October to early November. Memorial and honor gifts can still be made by calling the Stewardship and Development Office at 816-756-1850 or a pledge can be made at fifkcsj.org.

A Special Thank You… Dear Reverend Holder, Thank you for your participation in the Mission Cooperative Program through the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and for allowing Reverend John Fahey to conduct a mission appeal at your parish on July 25-26. The warm reception and hospitality provided by your parishioners was beyond anything that could have been expected. Through their generosity, the Redemptorists can continue their important work to serve the poor and most abandoned throughout our missions in Brazil and Nigeria. Thank you again for your kindness and cooperation. Through the intercession of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, may God continue to bless us both in doing his work.
