Please join us in prayer this week for :
Second Sunday of Advent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church December 9, 2018
From the Pastor:
This week and next, our Gospel readings invite us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets, preaching repent-ance and reform to the people of Israel. To affirm this, Luke quotes at length from the prophet Isaiah. John baptizes for re-pentance and for forgiveness of sins, preparing the way for God's salvation.
The three Synoptic Gospels—Mark, Matthew, and Luke—attest to the importance of the baptism of John in preparing for Jesus. Only the Gospel of Luke, however, extends the connection be-tween these two men to their birth. The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel tell about the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. These stories set the stage for the beginning of Jesus' public min-istry in chapter 3.
. In today's Gospel reading, as elsewhere, John the Baptist is pre-sented as the figure who bridges the time before Christ and pre-pares the way for Christ's own ministry.
In today's Gospel we also note Luke's attention to political and historical detail. Luke shows that salvation is for all people and situated in world events. Therefore, Luke lists the political and religious leaders at the time of John's appearance in the desert. Salvation is understood as God's breaking into this political and social history.
John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives the coming of the Lord, as John did. https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-year/sunday-connection/second-sunday-of-advent-cycle-c-sunday-connection

which originated in France, is sung or chanted Christian prayer, with musical accompaniment, using sim-ple repetitive words, refrains and melodies. “It is a time to rest in
God, to let the words listened to and sung pene-trate one’s being.” So says Brother John, a Taizé monk, in lectures and writings explaining what the service is all about.
There is no preaching, no teaching, no talk of sin or repentance or forgiveness. There is just this elegantly simple service: short chants, repeated several times as well as short Scripture readings or psalms, and silence, time to be at peace. A Taize prayer service is an hour or less.

Consider a new tradition for Advent!
The parishioners of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart are generous, regular supporters of the Food pantry at People to People.
During this season of preparation for Christmas, instead of receiving a little treat on each day of Advent, consider creating a food box or basket in your home with the addition of one non-perishable food item each day. Children would love to decorate the boxes, perhaps help you choose items when you shop, and contribute from their own allowance. Sharing the message of tak-ing care of those in our own community who are in need is a powerful lesson.
So many of us are blessed with so much! Your donations may be brought to the parish office or left in the Church lob-by.
Aging religious need your help!!!
Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests min-istered for years for little pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today's second collection for the Retirement Fund for Reli-gious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous
Remember the Sisters!
As is our tradition at OLSH, we remember
the service of the retired Dominican Sisters of
Blauvelt with small gifts each Christmas.
Please take one of the tags from the Giving Tree in the Church
lobby and place your gift beneath it.

The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12, goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story.
A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was bap-tized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small vil-lage near Mexico City. On Saturday morning December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.
Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own lan-guage and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.
Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan’s uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma.
On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his
tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to
the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees.
On the tilma where the roses had been ap-
peared an image of Mary exactly as she had
appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. Mary’s appear-
ance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a
powerful reminder that Mary—and the God
who sent her—accept all peoples. Our Lady of
Guadalupe cries out to us that God’s love for
and identification with the poor is an age-old
truth that stems from the Gospel itself.

Flowers will be placed on the altar in the main Church for the weekend and then moved to the Chapel for weekday Masses. The name of your loved one along with the name of the person making the request will be printed in the Bulletin and they will be remembered in a special way by the Priests as they celebrate Mass. We will also continue to take requests for the Tabernacle Candle Memorials. Please call the Parish Office (359-1230) for more information
