Our Lady of the Woods Parish Orland Park, IL
Under the protection of the Mother of God, we are a faith community called by the Father, energized by the Son, and moved by the Spirit to unite in
witnessing and proclaiming the Good News. We share in friendship, gather in worship, and do proclaim our desire to
minister, welcome, celebrate, and extend His Kingdom.

Dear Parishioners, This weekend the Nation and our Parish celebrates Memorial Day. This National Holiday, which originally developed to commemorate the dead of the American Civil War, has become a day to honor
all our dead, with a special emphasis on those military veterans who are deceased. One important ministry at Our Lady of the Woods is our Veteran’s Ministry. This ministry has sought to assist veterans in need by providing information about services, reach out to those in our parish who are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and help our parish in our awareness of the sacrifices that so many undertake. At the Sunday Mass this weekend we will offer a special blessing for our veterans. This year we also remember all those who have died. Many of you will visit cemeteries to pray for your loved ones. As you do so, remember to pray for all those who have died of coronavirus (nearly 100,000 in the United States) and in a special way those first responders and health care workers who lost their lives caring for others. Traditionally in May priests celebrate their ordination anniversaries. Bishop Gorman was ordained 68 years ago. Father Ed was ordained 47 years ago. Father Andrew was ordained 10 years ago and I was ordained 34 years ago. This year the various class celebrations have been cancelled - another result of COVID 19. Nonetheless we are all grateful for the years of service and our opportunity to be part of your lives. Jacob Dunne, one of the seminarians who has been with us for the past three years was ordained to the diac-onate in his home diocese in Iowa. Jake’s ordination was largely private, due to the requirements of distancing but I know you rejoice with him and we look forward to seeing him next year as our transitional deacon. Once again, I want to thank you for your support of those whose needs are greater. I will share part of a letter I received from Christopher Torres, regional Director of Catholic Charities. “I just wanted to thank the people of Our Lady of the Woods for the food donations and volunteers that have been coming into the pantry at Saint Blase. Christine Collins is wonderful BTW!!! We have experienced a 50% increase in volume at the pantry in the last few weeks and have been stretched to keep up with the demand. Your support really helps us ensure that everyone who comes to us gets served.” Finally, I am including Cardinal Cupich’s letter to the Archdiocese regarding the partial reopening of Catho-lic Churches in Illinois. I had included it on the website last Sunday but for those who only read the bulletin, this becomes another way to hear from our Cardinal. In Christ,
Father Mike
