Dear Parishioners, President Kennedy frequently shared this quote that he attributed to Dante. “The hottest

places in Hell are reserved for those who in time of moral crisis preserve their neutrality.” Kennedy actually was paraphrasing Dante’s reflection in The Divine Comedy. Dante is a bit more elegant in postulating the entrance to hell as a special place for those who are satisfied to do nothing. In every generation and in every nation and community there are some who do more work and others who sit on the sidelines. Sometimes people who feel passionately about some issue simply burnout. Frequently, we are not sure exactly what to do. At times there are real conflicts. The old movie, On the Waterfront, is one of many cinematic explorations for the struggle between doing what is right and doing what is expedient. It is never easy. In every age there seems to be different moral challenges. We have our own moral issues today and I would suggest it is a challenge to confront them, especially in our hyper-polarized society. Yet the challenges remain. As Christians we believe that every human being is a miracle of life and a child of God. This means at a minimum we seek a society that does the following:

-Respects human life in the basic right to life from beginning in the womb until natural death. -Treats every person with dignity and respect. This means every person! -Protects family life as a sacred reality and ensures the safety and well-being of children. -Shares its blessings with the less fortunate in this world.

This is the minimum that the Gospel asks of us. Good people may disagree on how best to achieve these values but the goals are those of Jesus Christ. The struggle for many is how to live their own lives while seeking to navigate the challenges of the Gospel. It is my own struggle as well. We cannot do everything but all of us can do something. In this increasingly secular world, I believe people of faith can lead the way. It will not be easy but following Christ never is. Next week we welcome Father Bernard Viagappan from India who will lead our mission appeal. In Christ,

Father Mike
