OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 4 NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN
When you walk with Jesus and listen to him, you can’t but help ponder his words and take them in deep within yourself. I think that’s the theme of Herbert O’Driscoll’s song “Come and Journey with a Savior.” Walking with Jesus brings
about a change of heart. Discipleship requires a change of heart. It turns one from looking inside to looking outside. O’Driscoll is an Irish born Anglican priest that has only fourteen hymns to his name and has authored many books about faith.
Now that we are in Ordinary Time, our music has changed and we are singing David Haas’ Mass for the Life of the
World, which is a bit jazzy but enjoyable to sing. We have two settings of the Gloria from our supplement that we will alternate every other month so that by doing only one won’t get boring.
Kathy Sanderson, Music Director
Today, we celebrate the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time. We continue in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 9:51-62). Both the gospel passage for this Sunday and the first reading from 1 Kings talk about following after someone—about answering the call.
In the reading from Kings (1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21), Elijah is asked to go and anoint Elisha as the person to succeed him. We are not told anything about Elisha before this point, so we do not know if he knows Elijah. He is a young man plowing the fields, he has his mind on his chores and he is fulfilling the duty he has to his family. All of a sudden a flying cloak is thrown over him. He leaves the oxen and the plow to run after Elijah and ask if he can return to his family to say goodbye? He understands that the cloak is a sign that everything he had thought would be his future has now changed. He also knows that he needs to make this radical choice very quickly. Elisha’s call to leave what he knows behind comes while he is doing his everyday activities. Where do you hear God’s call in your daily work? When you hear the invitation how do you respond? Do you respond or do you just silence what you hear?
In the gospel today, we hear different responses to Jesus’ interaction with the different people. In the village, they would not welcome him because they were afraid of where he was headed. We hear how someone promises to follow him wherever he goes. He makes a pledge that he cannot keep, because he really doesn’t understand what his response means. Do we also do this at times? Do we say we want to be followers of Jesus until we find out that we might need to make changes in our life? Or are we like the people who make conditional statements. How often do we say: “I’ll follow later—but first…but only if…but on one condition…”
Elisha responds with an understanding that he is walking into new territory, and that he first must leave what he knows and the plans he had made for himself. We come to know as the narration continues that he becomes the greatest of the prophets. We do not learn what happens to the people in the gospel story that were offered an opportunity to follow Jesus. They are unwilling to answer the invitation because they preferred things just as they are. Are you listening to the invitations that you are given each day? Are you willing to take the next step forward or do you want to just stay where you are?

In today’s Gospel, we see how Jesus on his way to Jerusalem, sent a “messenger on ahead of Him.” To be the messengers of God is being sent out to bring his love to others. To do this, we must know what it is that God wants us to say and do through him. Please join us in the following prayer from Deacon Mike Lyman, our St. Vincent de Paul Mideast Regional Spiritual Advisor…as we share the love of Jesus Christ with those who look to us in their time of need:
Lord Jesus Christ, allow us to be instruments of your peace and love. Let us convey to those you place before us a love, a patience, a compassion and a hope that is beyond measure. Through our eyes let us bring peace, through our smile and demeanor let us bring joy and through our presence let us bring hope and the true love of God to all whom we touch. We pray all of this in your name. Amen Join us at our next meeting this

Summer is the perfect time to
reconnect as a family and to redirect your daily routine to celebrate a sense of oneness not aloneness! It can be hard to do but with some planning it can be done! Perhaps, one of the following suggestions will assist you.
Make your family a priority. It may seem rather silly to say this but the reality is that we often get caught up in setting up family schedules that serve each individual but does nothing for the family as a whole. Consider this week how often you sit together as one unit or do an activity with every family member present. Plan at least one evening activity this week where everyone is involved. Play a game together, take a walk, watch the sunset, listen to the birds sing their evening songs, watch for the first star of the night to appear in the sky (yes it is late but what is summer for?), etc. Establish unity with daily prayer. Even if it is for a few minutes in the morning or at night stop and thank God together for the day and verbally express whatever challenges await you or whatever confronted you during your day. Ask God to help you with those persons or situations and then be open to how that help presents itself.
As a family plan how you will in some way reach out to others in need. Scour the weekly bulletin for suggestions or listen to the local news. Shop for items that will be put in the bin here at church for Civic Concern or Salvation Army. Search through your gently used clothes that are no longer worn by family members and donate them. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. He will lead you to what it is that you can do.
Why not use the summer season as an opportunity to nurture your family both spiritually and emotionally? Fall will come soon enough with its demands on your time and energy. Ask Jesus to show you how! Could you be called to Share the Good News?
What good news? The Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This fall, 450 children and young people, preschool through grade 8, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow in faith by becoming a catechist in the Faith Formation program. With classes offered late afternoons on Monday and Tuesday, evenings on Monday, as well as the Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday, you are almost sure to find a time that fits your schedule. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow in your knowledge, too! As one long-time catechist put it, “I learn so much from the children!” We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin the week of September 12. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Mary Ellen Skene at (248) 349-2559 or [email protected].
Christ the Good Shepherd Preschool Program If you have a 3 1/2-5 year old child who would enjoy
the Christ the Good Shepherd experience in our Atrium on Sundays during the 9:30 a.m. Mass; or on Mondays from 4:45-6:00 p.m. (4-5 year old children only), please call or email
the Faith Formation Office for registration in format ion or v i s i t the par i sh webs i te (www.olvnorthville.org) and click on the home page banner.

themselves while growing spiritually. Through the archdiocesan Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools, your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal support the work of catechists, who plan vacation Bible schools in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. These faith-filled weeks during the summer help children learn about Jesus in a relaxing and fun way. Dedicated catechists also teach our faith in parishes and Catholic schools. Their mission includes helping others to reflect on their Catholic faith and understand its purpose in today’s world.
