TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn’t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you’ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is do-ing. In early days, when reconciliation was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. Ministers’ serving assigned Mass: EMs, lec-tors and altar servers are asked to please arrive at Church and sign in within the sacristy a mini-mum of 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the celebration of the Mass. This allows Father Guidry to be sure all necessary people assist-ing at Mass are present. With the advent of Spring, ball and other seasonal activities, dis-tractions abound to keep us from satisfying our responsibilities to our Church but more impor-tantly to Our Lord. The donation to the Lord of our time and talent is important throughout the year. Please be cooperative with one another regarding substituting. Some parents are refus-ing to allow their child/ server to sub for others. This is not an appropriate model for your chil-dren much less Christian witness to the neces-sity of charity toward one another. God bless you in your role at the Mass. You are allowing graces to pour over you.

Third Sunday in Lent

Moses stayed on the mountain of God forty

days (Exodus 24:18). Elijah traveled forty days

before he had a vision (1 Kings 19:8). And Je-

sus spent forty days in the wilderness, praying

and fasting, before his public ministry (Matthew

4:1-11).

"Forty days" in the Scriptures—and in the life of

the Church—traditionally signifies a time of

preparation, discipline, devotion, and testing. In

the Transfiguration, God gave the three disci-

ples a sneak peek at the glory of the revelation

of Christ that was first witnessed by Moses on

the Mount. They would not immediately under-

stand the purpose of the suffering Christ was

about to endure. But having witnessed that mo-

ment of resurrected glory, they would one day

come to understand that God's redemption

would be accomplished, not by a conquering

Messiah, but through one who would suffer.

This Transfiguration anticipates not only

Christ's glorification, but our own as well. Paul

said, "It is the Spirit himself bearing witness

with our spirit that we are children of God, and

if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow

heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in

order that we may also be glorified with

him" (Romans 8:16-17).

Action Step

The Catechism teaches, "By the solemn forty

days of Lent the Church unites herself each

year to the mystery of Jesus in the de-

sert" (CCC 540). How will you unite yourself

this Lent with Christ in the "desert" in a particu-

lar area of your life, so that you too can experi-

ence the glory of Easter? Taken from

peared in glory and spoke of his [exodus],

which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem."—

What did you give up for Lent this year?

Chocolate? Coffee? Dessert? When I was

younger, I usually chose something intrinsi-

cally unappealing, like lutefisk (a Scandinavian

specialty of codfish soaked in lye). But as the

days of Lent rolled on, my admiration grew for

those around me who had made genuine sac-

rifices. It was common to hear the faithful

speak longingly of a hot fudge sundae or

French silk pie toward the end of those forty

days. Me? I didn't really look forward to any-

thing at the conclusion of Lent, nor had I antici-

pated the grand focus of Lent: the resurrec-

tion. So while my friends and family eagerly

anticipated the conclusion of Lent, life went on

as normal for me.

When Jesus led Peter, James, and John up

that high mountain (see also Mark 9:2-10),

their lives were anything but normal. Moses

and Elijah appeared and began to speak to

Jesus, as he was transfigured before them, his

Garments a glistening, intense white. We call

this event “the Transfiguration”.

As we read the text, we should ask ourselves,

"Why are we hearing about Moses and Elijah

appearing to Jesus in the readings during

Lent?" One important reason is that these

men all experienced a forty-day period of

preparation. (Matthew 4:1-11).

Sacred Heart Lenten Mission 2013: March 4,5,6, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church

“Fourth Century Faith for the Twenty –First: Sts. Ambrose, Monica and Augustine” In this Year of Faith, Fr. Lucas Tomson will lead the parish on a journey back to the 4th century. Together, we will meet three saints from the patristic era of the Church. While quite different from each other, they encountered Christ and received from Him the gift of faith. With this virtue, they spent the rest of their lives seeking Him in communion with the Church. Although they lived long ago, they have much to teach us today, for we share one faith.

OLQAS Mission is scheduled for March 12, 13, and 14th be-ginning at 6:00PM each eve-ning. Deacon David Guillory will speak on “Living the Beati-tudes”. Mass will be celebrated each night. Confessions will be heard a half hour prior to the

Mission. Come and join fellow parishioners and enrich your spirit life during this Lenten season.

Change in Holy Hour Schedule: There will be no more Holy Hours on 1st Fridays– rather Holy Hour will be held on the Thursday be-fore each First Friday from 6-7PM following Mass with the exception of July 5th when it will be held from 11-12 before noon Mass. During this Lenten season, we have the opportunity to reflect on how we have responded to the Gospel call to serve Jesus through the poor and vulnerable. On March 9 and 10, the Diocese of Lafayette will host The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collection in all of our parishes.

Catholic Relief Services provides assistance to our marginalized, impoverished, and vulnerable brothers and sisters all over the world. It provides vocational education and job skills for the unemployed in underdeveloped nations. The Catholic Relief Collection provides aid to anti-trafficking programs that combat the proliferation of human slavery throughout the world, where young women are kidnapped and force to work as prostitutes or in slave labor conditions. It also provides assistance to immigrants, and refugees, including victims of war, natural disaster, and drought.
