~ REFLECTION ~ Today we conclude the liturgical year and
the Jubilee Year of Mercy. As we begin our celebration today, it would be good to reflect on what our merciful God has done
for us. How is our world a better place because of the mercy of God that we have
received and shared with our sisters and brothers?
TEN REASONS FOR
GOING TO MASS
Not so long ago Catholics felt they had to have a 106o fever and a fractured pelvis to be excused from Sunday Mass. Now, some Catholics (especially young ones, but many older ones too) miss a succession of Sundays for much lighter reasons and still consider themselves active members of the Church. Many “ordinary” Catholics find themselves emotionally attached to the old way that stressed obligation. Yet they admire one aspect of the less rigid approach: the freely choosing to attend rather than fearing not to. The following is an attempt to “have it both ways”, as much as possible. Why do I – any Catholic follower of Christ – both freely and responsibly chose to join the Eucharistic community each Sunday, and oth-er times as well?
8. WHY GO TO MASS? BECAUSE I NEED ENERGY
I don't know how grace "works", but I do know that when I feel I can get along without God's very presence, power, love — then one of two things will happen. I will become "independent," isolated, the master of my fate, the captain of my soul, etc. I will become a self-starter, self-made, blind, but all-seeing. man or woman.
Or, I will spend my life desperately trying one hy-podermic after another. With poet Francis Thompson, I may be lucky enough, someday, to realize that "I fled Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled him, down the labyrinthine ways of my own mind; and in the mist of tears; I hid from Him, and under running laughter" (The Hound of Heaven) . So, I need the energy, paradoxically, to become powerless, weak, and totally dependent on God, relaxing in his presence; humanly-psychologically mature and responsible, yet childlike in my need. I need the energy to stop running away from this Hound of Heaven; to stop being the hungry, ex-hausted wanderer, going from one empty well to another.
DID YOU KNOW? From cyberbullying to name-calling and exclusion, bullying can affect people of every age, especially kids and teens in school. Their peers can be cruel, so it’s important to talk about how to handle bullies, especially
before a situation escalates. One way to stop the cycle of bullying in its tracks, is to teach kids to speak kindly to others and to treat eve-ryone around them with respect. For more in-formation, please visit https://www.faithandsafety.org/bullying.
SABIA USTED?
