Dear Quilting Friends: I certainly hope this finds all of you well, this flu business is scaring me to death. My little one year old Great Grandson has it so please lift him up in your prayers. We had another good meeting Monday night and as always we missed all of you who were not there. The wheels are really turning for our quilt show in September and I urge all of you to enter a quilt, wall hanging, table runner or in other words anything quilted. We are going to have an un-judged category and I know that as much talent as there is in this guild that you all have something you could enter and if you don't there is still time to get something ready. I don't mean to beat this horse to death but, am so thankful for all of you and all you do to make our guild so much fun. It makes being president so much easier. Even though I'm not a fan of cold, ice, and snow it has been nice to have more than one pajama day and get my number six UFO all pieced. This has been great and am so glad we are doing it again this year. If we keep doing it for about five years I might not have any UFO's. Happy Quilting,

~ Charity Quilts ~

We are trying to clean out at Sidney's to make room for the new. We were having trouble getting around with all the wonderful donations that have been made. THANKS so much to all of you who bought scrap bags and old blocks at the Guild meeting. We will have more next meeting. Looking for a volunteer to straighten the shelves so we will have room on them. We are also working on kits, so let us know if you are interested in another day of sewing on Charity Quilts. A big thanks to everyone who has helped with the Charity Quilts in 2017. Keep up the good work. Sidney

~ Blocks of the Month ~

Don't you love freebies? Do you have a lot of extra time on your hands?? Then you might like these 2 new blocks of the month that have just started online: On Feb 2, http://www.farmhousethreads.com/ is starting a block of the week that is among several bloggers. If you sign up to receive emails on the farmhouse site, you'll get a notice when it starts. I'm working on a block of the month from Buttermilk Basin that was published 2 years ago and love it. There is a new one starting this month. Hurry and download your pattern. After 30 days, it is no longer free. It can be a little confusing to find this particular BOM. At the main page, http://www.buttermilkbasin.com/ look under "Mystery BOM." It's called "Buttermilk Homestead."

~ Saturday Workshops ~

February, 2018, no class projects are planned for the month. If someone would like to have a class, please contact me and will attempt to have a date and info for the class. Thank you. Cely Slover

~ 2018 Heart of Arkansas Quilt Show ~

2018 Heart of Arkansas Quilt Show - That has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? And it’s going to be here before we know it! Here are just a few notes about the 2018 Show. In our last show we had 130 quilts. We anticipate around 200 to 230 this year – but that’s just wishful speculation on my part. Have you done your quilts yet? Well, get a move on! This year we’re going to allow non guild members to enter, but they’ll have to pay a $5 entry fee per quilt. So you know what that means, right? It means that we guild members will have to get our entries in that much sooner! The best scenario is that we’ll have all our guild entries safely registered, then we’ll simply stop outside entries when we run out of display space.

How much display space do we have? Good question! We have 2.5 times as much floor space as we had last time, but it was tight. We want to allow plenty of vendor space, plenty of walkway space, and enough pathways within the display area that you don’t have to circumnavigate Benton to get from point A to point B. Myrna and Gwen are working with Nikki at the Event Center to get a nice workable layout, and at the same time, determine how many racks we need to rent. That’s why I said earlier that 200 to 230 was wishful speculation on my part. I could be wrong! I’m working on the Quilt Entry Registration Forms and the final category list, but I’m waiting for some more input. I’ll get them out as quickly as I can! You will notice something a little different about the registration forms this time. You know how the previous forms had sizes on a lot of the categories. For example, on the pieced quilts, there was a category for 69 to 89 inches, and another category for 90 inches or larger. This year we won’t divide into sized sub-categories until all the entries are in, and we know how many there are of each size. This way, we can more evenly distribute the numbers of entries in each sub-category. I expect this to level the playing field tremendously for the pieced entries and the wall-hangings. It might also help with grouping Miscellaneous items into wearables, pillows / decorator items, etc, once we see what’s been entered. This will be more work on the part of the worker bees, but it should make things more fair for entrants, and should also help the judging process. And if it doesn’t, well, we’ll go back to the old way for the 2020 show! Get those quilts finished soon! Terri Dobbs

~ Library Report ~

Fabric Collage Quilts Using Creative Applique and Embellishments, by Joanne Goldstein, is fun to look at and a great source for design ideas, helpful hints, and general quilting information. For years the author was happy to be sewing traditional pieced and appliqued quilts, but decided she would like to create something fresh and new. Starting with yardage of huge chrysanthemums, she found that she could cut out individual motifs of different sizes and shapes from the flowers and leaves to be used as appliques. She liked the results, which led her to notice the wide variety of large-scale prints that could be found in the fabric store, as well as in her fabric stash. She experimented with colorful birds, fish, butterflies, etc., employing techniques of broderie perse. She then added traditionally-pieced backgrounds to the formula, along with some embroidery, beads, silk ribbons, and lace embellishments. The results are stunning. I would definitely want to start with a small project, and I would have to "polish up" on my hand embroidery and applique skills, but this author certainly caught my interest; her instructions and diagrams are thorough and appear to be easy to follow. I would be happy to help you CHECK THIS OUT. Myrna Yandell Librarian
