OUR T OWN PUBLISHED BY THE TOWN OF NEW MARKET Volume 48 DECEMBER 2017 Number 12 MAYOR'S CORNER It's the most wonderful time of the year! Most of us seem to have a lighter heart and are full of a little more laughter. However, for some people, December is a month that can be very stressful. The everyday challenges can make this time of year a burden when it comes to buying presents and cooking. These are all things that require extra money. However, there are many items to give that don't cost at all. I don't know about you but I always welcome the gifts of services from someone. A gift of house cleaning, snow shov- eling, garden/lawn work, are all gifting ideas that don't cost any- thing but time on our part. So if you are in the midst of a bad year, give a gift certificate filled with love and your own hard work. You will be surprised at how much a loved one or friend will welcome your gift. When we take time to focus on the many blessings upon us, we soon realize how much “things” are not that important at all. If you do have some holiday purchases to make, remember to “think local, shop local” and visit our town businesses during the holiday season. The perfect time for buying gifts in our Town would be on Saturday, December 2, 2017 during the annual 'Tis the Season event. This is a full day filled with bargains in our shops, a parade, tree lighting, and cookies for everyone. The event begins at 9:00 am. Santa will be at the New Market Library as our special guest of the evening. Bring the children out for a delightful evening to enjoy the festivities! You can visit the Town of New Market's web- page or refer to the special holiday edition of the newsletter for more information. Grab a friend and we hope to see you there. 'Tis the Season to enjoy the holidays! We have a new face in town. J. Todd Walters joins us from Christiansburg as Town Manager. We welcome Todd to our town and look forward to working with him in the coming years. If you have a moment, stop by the Town Office to extend a warm welcome as he gets to know the people in the community and face everyday challenges in his new job. In closing, I wish each of you and your loved ones a joyful and blessed Christmas and my hope for you is that the New Year brings each of you peace and happiness. Once all of the hustle and bustle is put aside, remember that family, friends, and those we love are what is really important and add real value to our daily lives. Enjoy the season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Douglas C. Bradley Mayor of New Market A NOTE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER As I finish up my first weeks as Town Manager of New Market I wanted to share my impressions so far. We live in a beautiful part of the state and we have a beautiful town. The Town holds a lot of history which draws visitors to the town that shop, eat, and lodge here. We have wonderful citizens, and I have been impressed with the town staff that works hard to serve the citizens. I look forward to serving the town as the Town Manager. As we move forward there will be challenges that we will face. As with most localities we have an aging infrastructure which the town has been actively working on improving and has made some decisions in the past to address these issues. We also face the challenge of how we will grow with housing, and commercial development. I believe we are in a good place and we have a good foundation to grow at a smart pace to not lose the character of the town as it is today. I look forward to being able to meet as many people as I can in the future. I hope you and your family have a blessed holiday season! RESPONSIBILITIESDURING INCLEMENT WEATHER

Please remember to do your part to keep the sidewalks openand clear for those wishing to use them this winter season. In 2004the Town Council passed an ordinance in which property owners areresponsible for the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks alongtheir property. The Town thanks you for promptly clearing yoursidewalk for the benefit of not only you, but for your neighbors andthe entire community as well. Please contact the town office fordetails pertaining to the Town Ordinance.

If you are unable to clear snow on or along your property youwill need to find someone to assist you. There are many people whooffer this service. It would be wise to seek out help before the win-ter weather arrives.

Please also maintain access to your water meter. Trimmingfoliage and clearing snow and ice from the lid of the meter pit canensure proper access to your water meter. Maintaining access to yourwater meter will assist us with:

• Emergency shutoffs (for frozen pipes) when you are awayfrom home or are unable to turn off the water inside yourlocation.

• Emergency water meter maintenance.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIESThe onset of the Holidays often brings cold weather and snow

right along with it. Whether the storm totals 1” or 12”+, winterweather presents challenges for all of us. Here are a few tips inadvance of this winter season:

• Be prepared: Predicting weather seems to be a challengeeven with advances in 21st century meteorology. Withfew exceptions winter storms are rarely a total surprise.Winter weather advisories are usually posted days inadvance of the storm. Use that time to restock yourmedications, food and other essentials.

• Be careful: It may seem like an overused piece of advice, but when you travel unnecessarily on snow covered roadsyou put yourself and your vehicle at risk and make clear-ing roads that much more challenging. For those of youwho do have to travel, plan ahead and leave yourselfextra time to get to your destination.

• Be patient: Removing snow from streets takes time.Storm duration, temperature and sunlight all affect howquickly streets are cleared. Often it's not until the sunreturns and day time temperatures exceed 32 degreesthat frozen snow and ice on streets can completely beremoved.

• Be helpful: After the snow has stopped please help keepyour neighbors and friends safe by clearing the side-walk(s) that fronts your property. It's not only the rightthing to do; it's also required by town ordinance.
