I stepped into the position of President and CEO of Horizon North at the beginning of 2015. At that time, we immediately undertook a necessary three-year journey of transformational change. The result is a company that has grown from having an existential reliance on the oil and gas industry to having a diversified portfolio of industrial services and modular solutions.

Few organizations can lay claim to working with the same variety of customers as Horizon North. Among others, we work with Aboriginal communities, residential home buyers, commercial developers, government agencies, and Canadian and international energy and mining companies.

In this magazine, we proudly give you an in-depth look at all that Horizon North offers within our Industrial Services and Modular Solutions divisions. Included in our diverse offerings are:

• Workforce Accommodations - We provide workforce accommodations in Alberta’s oil sands region, in the geologically prolific Montney/Duvernay energy corridor, where we are the largest provider of open camp rooms, and across remote parts of Canada’s North, where our full turnkey solution succeeds in volatile weather environments seen in few other areas of the world.

• Industrial Infrastructure - We provide safe, reliable access to remote resource development, utilizing long lasting products like oak mats and environmentally responsible stabilization solutions.

• Modular Solutions - We build modular structures in a timetable significantly shorter than conventional construction, with an emphasis on quality, cost certainty and a smaller environmental footprint throughout the

process. Our world class offering includes single family homes and larger commercial and residential products, including affordable housing, hotels, condos, student housing and senior centers.

The reason this is all possible, and the reason we succeed, is our belief in people—those we work with and our own employees. Three fundamental pieces remain inviolable to us as Horizon North continues to grow:

• Safety - Ensuring the safety of our employees, guests and customers is of paramount importance to us, and I am proud that we are one of the few organizations in our industry prepared to provide full disclosure of our safety records. Our Gold Level standing for Canada’s Safest Employers is a testament to our safety work.

• Indigenous and Community Affairs - We are investors in strong partnerships with Indigenous communities and proudly employ 15 per cent of our workforce as self-identified First Nations members. We do more than talk the talk, we offer true partnership.

• Best in Class Employees - None of our success is possible without the contributions of our workforce across western and northern Canada. We want to be sought after as an employer of choice, with employees who are best in class in everything we do to serve our customers.

Enjoy the following pages as you learn more about us. We look forward to continuing our relationships with the customers that have made Horizon North what we are today, and we look with excitement to new relationships with those who may be hearing about us for the first time.

At Horizon North, we are incredibly proud of our roots. Those roots lay in a region we call ‘the North.’ It is the part of Canada

beyond the 60th parallel north, including the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

In 2006, two public companies with operations in the North merged and established the initial foundation for our organization. Today, we continue to seek opportunities to provide services and build relationships in this region that has deeply influenced us. In all the ways we portray ourselves, the North plays a vital part. It’s in our name, it’s in our work, and it’s in our most prominent symbol, our logo.

Horizon North’s logo incorporates five elements that are integral to the cycle and nature of life in the Arctic:

• The 24 hours of darkness of the winter solstice • The 24 hours of daylight of the summer solstice • The sun• The water• The horizon, where the land and sky appear to meet Together, these pieces form a memorable representation of the beginning of our company, and the continued importance of a region where our expertise thrives.

Aboriginal Focus

Our commitment to communities that call the North home is an essential factor in our success in the region. We are dedicated to building genuine, lasting relationships with the region’s Aboriginal communities, and have been doing so since our inception. “Canada’s North is a uniquely beautiful part of our country, but to live or work there you need to be very adaptive to the harsh extremes that comes with it. The people from the North have a strong character and a special bond to their land,” says Pat Hammerschmidt, Vice President, Aboriginal and Community Relations for Horizon North.

Our five strategic Aboriginal partnerships in the North allow us to involve locals in projects that provide economic and employment benefits, with our Work North initiative aiming to hire staff from within these communities. Wherever we do our work, we meet with the people affected to encourage discussion and information exchange on opportunities and community impact.

The North and Beyond

Our history and project success in the North has given us the experience required to work in one of the world’s most unique areas. Having worked in the remote locations, varied terrains and diverse communities of the region, we are uniquely positioned to handle the opportunities and challenges it presents. This has not only made us ideal for business there, but it has prepared us for business everywhere.

We continue to see the North as not just a part of our past and our present, but as a part of our future.

Arctic Safety Tips

Tip #1: Dress Appropriately

Always dress in layers in the Arctic, with a wind-resistant outer layer for your body. If you start to sweat, remove layers until your body temperature regulates again. That sweat can turn into a layer of cold on your body if the temperature drops. Wear a hat, gloves and something to keep your face warm in the cold, as well as warm and waterproof footwear. In extreme cold temperatures, cover as much exposed skin as possible.

Tip #2: Plan Ahead

Plan for the cold and listen to the weather forecasts, taking note of any extreme cold warnings. If you know it will be cold and you are working outdoors, plan for suitable breaks to warm up. Know where the nearest place is that can act as a shelter from the wind, whether that spot is indoors or outdoors. Don’t forget: Tobacco and certain medications can increase your susceptibility to cold.

Tip #3: Drive to the Conditions

Driving is unique in the Arctic, particularly on ice roads. Know that braking distances are much greater on ice, so follow other vehicles at an appropriate distance. Slow your driving speed to the conditions as well, to ensure you have the right amount of time to react to anything that happens on the road.

Services Provided

Supply, assembly and installation of more than 1,300 camp rooms, plus operation services, including camp management, catering, housekeeping, maintenance, waste water and potable water treatment, and refuse incineration.

Overview

Horizon North was awarded a contract to provide camp services for a customer in the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut in April 2017. Under the scope of the contract, Horizon North will perform a variety of camp installation and operation services over the agreement’s three-year duration. When fully operational, more than 1,300 workforce accommodation rooms will be served, including two 77-person camps (one at the northern port access and the other at the mine site), a 380-person hybrid camp, and an 800-person camp.At the two smaller 77-person camps,

Horizon North will provide full camp management, maintenance, and housekeeping services. At the 380- and 800-person camps, a full suite of operational services, including camp management, catering, housekeeping, maintenance, waste water and potable water treatment, and refuse incineration will be provided.

Due to the northern location, additional hurdles had to be overcome on this project apart from the normal work required for successful camp installation and operation:

Temperature – With effective temperatures in the winter of up to 60 degrees below zero, the camp structures are built to sustain the weather extremes and harsh conditions.

Regulatory requirements – The refuse incineration, waste water and potable water treatment services use technology unseen in other regions to address the stringent regulatory requirements which protect the environment in the North.

Logistics – The remote project location meant that most supplies were delivered by sea lift and then transported to their final home. The timing of all necessary preparations (organizing, safely packaging and loading all equipment) was required to line up with the narrow available window for sea transport, which can be as small as 75 days of open water per year given the icy climate.

MODULAR MICRO-SUITES

Across North America, municipal leaders are seeking innovative ways

to provide access to affordable housing for those without a home and for groups vulnerable to displacement, including students and seniors.

A variety of solutions have been tested and implemented by different cities, including policy changes, purchase restrictions, and incentives for affordable housing. Another solution gaining traction in many municipalities is the construction of ‘micro-suites’, smaller living units that make more efficient use of space.

What are micro-suites?

Micro-suites are an emerging trend in the housing sector, with the necessities of a residence (bathroom, kitchen, bed, living space, etc.) laid out over a smaller footprint, and leveraging wall space and vertical space for any additional needs.

Rather than a typical one-bedroom unit of ~800 sq ft, a micro-suite may be 250-350 sq ft. That smaller footprint means an overall lower cost per unit, meaning micro-suites are attracting groups who have an interest in access to housing for vulnerable groups, including:

• Government organizations with the mandate to provide affordable housing solutions

• Universities and colleges providing student housing

• Senior housing organizations

Our success

Horizon North’s versatile, modular micro-suites have been used successfully in British Columbia, where the provincial government, with the assistance of local agencies, has committed to providing affordable housing options for vulnerable citizens.

Horizon North’s first affordable housing project was 220 Terminal Avenue for the Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency (VAHA). With 40 single-occupancy suites, including wheelchair-accessible units on the main floor, the modular housing project was designed to act as a transition between temporary and permanent housing for low-income Vancouver citizens.

Located on land which is slated for future development, the 220 Terminal Avenue building maximizes usage of a city-owned site while permanent homes are being developed. When the current site is ready for development, because of the innovative design and foundation systems, the modular units from this project can be separated, re-deployed and re-integrated to fit a new site or sites.

Why modular?

In modular construction, multiple sections (modules) are manufactured off-site in a temperature-controlled facility. The modules are then transported to their intended site and joined together to make one integrated building which, when complete, is virtually indistinguishable from those built with traditional construction methods.

Modular construction lends itself perfectly to affordable housing, with units that can be sized appropriately to customers’ needs and which bring significant improvements over site-built construction methods:

• Superior quality – Modular projects are subject to stringent internal quality assurance / quality control processes, which are then confirmed by on-site third-party inspectors

• Cost certainty – Costs remain on track as time delays due to weather, minimal trade availability, accident damage or theft are virtually eliminated

• Sustainability – The lean modular construction process cuts down significantly on waste and improves efficiencies

• Timetable certainty – With manufacturing occurring in the controlled environment at the same time as foundational work on the eventual site, the overall project time can be reduced by up to 50 per cent

Design, manufacturing, transportation, setting, and installation of a modular hotel structure

Overview

The complete turn-key Coast Oliver Hotel project was awarded to Horizon North in September 2017. Following ground breaking in November 2017, Horizon North set to work designing, manufacturing, transporting, setting and installing a total of 61 modules for the project, which aimed for a quick-to-market timeline to opening.

The required modules were built at Horizon North’s temperature-controlled manufacturing facility in Kamloops, British Columbia, while the site foundation was constructed simultaneously on the hotel’s site in Oliver, British Columbia. Craning of the modules onto the foundation occurred in late March 2018, after which the

completion team took over the final phase of the project, fully integrating each module over a period of three months. The hotel opened to its first customers in mid-July 2018.

The 61 modules make up the four-storey, 43,000 sq ft finished structure located just east of busy Highway 97, which intersects Oliver as it winds its way through the Okanagan. The 83-room hotel also features an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, a breakfast-service kitchen and eating area, a modular vaulted grand entrance and a modular elevator.

A leader in the design and construction of modular homes, Karoleena partnered with The Holmes Group as an official

HOLMES Approved Homes builder in April 2017.

Karoleena achieved this prestigious status through an emphasis on quality, efficiency and environmental sustainability, which align with respected Canadian contractor Mike Holmes’ high standards for construction.

What HOLMES Approved Means for You

Simply put, HOLMES Approved Homes are built better. They offer the following advantages to homeowners:

• Industry-Leading Products – Approved homes incorporate features such as fire and sound protection, high indoor air quality, and heat recovery systems.

• Best Techniques – Every approved home uses tried and tested building techniques and practices in its construction.

• Better Inspections – Every approved home undergoes several inspections by approved Mike Holmes Inspectors to create a thorough record of the home’s quality.

• Latest Technology – Mike Holmes Inspectors are accredited Level 1 Thermographers, using specialized equipment like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to generate more detailed information.

• Safer Homes – Approved homes are safer, stronger and more durable, thanks to superior construction practices and a strict adherence to proper code in every aspect.

More About Karoleena

Karoleena is one of a select few modular home builders in North America to be HOLMES Approved, using modular construction technology to create premium modern homes. We deliver superior design and quality craftmanship in an unbeatable timeline.

Acquired by Horizon North in 2016, Karoleena homes are manufactured in a modern facility located in Kamloops, British Columbia. They are then delivered by our in-house transportation team, installed on site and move-in ready in as little as six months from the start of manufacturing.

Our modular built homes are customizable, constructed to fit your needs through a variety of interior and exterior finishes. Whether you want floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize your views of the natural surroundings, something more rustic, or a modern look fit for the city, you have the freedom to choose what suits your vision. If your priority is cost certainty, the indoor modular construction environment provides needed confidence, as the sources of overruns that plague conventional construction like weather delays, damage, trades shortages or theft are virtually eliminated. If you are looking for a sustainable build, modular built homes are also inherently friendlier to the environment, as material waste is reduced and site disturbance from noise, dust and traffic is minimized significantly.

It is no coincidence that modular construction has been a mainstay in European construction for decades and is quickly gaining traction in North America. Simply put, we feel it is a better way to build.

“We don’t allow people to come to us - we source out the best builders!”- Mike Holmes

Design, manufacturing, transportation, and installation of a temporary modular housing structure

Overview

Horizon North was awarded the contract for Vancouver’s first temporary modular housing development in August 2016. The scope of the 220 Terminal Avenue project for the Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency (VAHA) involved designing, manufacturing, transporting and installing a rapid response building to act as a transition between temporary and permanent housing for low-income Vancouver citizens who were facing displacement. Manufacturing of the necessary modules began following the award of the contract, with resident occupancy available in late February 2017.

38 modules make up the three-storey, 14,875 sq ft finished structure. The

building features a central laundry and indoor common area, and 40 single occupancy suites with self-contained bathrooms and kitchens, individual climate control and private living spaces. Several units on the main floor are slightly larger than a typical 250 sq ft to make them wheelchair accessible for those with mobility difficulties.

Located on land which is slated for future development, the 220 Terminal Avenue building is designed to maximize usage of a city-owned site while permanent homes are being developed. With an innovative foundation system that is adaptable and reusable, the modular units from this project can be separated, re-deployed and re-integrated to fit a new site or sites when the current land is ready for development.

Governments and community partners are seeking ways to respond rapidly to a need for housing individuals and families who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness.

Student Housing

Institutions, student groups and the public and private sectors are facing more pressure to create student housing opportunities. Permanent or temporary modular built solutions can meet land-use needs and allow desperately needed facilities to be made available up to 50 per cent faster with no reduction in quality.

MODULAR SOLUTIONS

Affordable Housing

Horizon North’s innovative modular solutions can be delivered quickly and effectively to combat the growing issues of homelessness and vulnerability to displacement among certain groups, including students and seniors. With a high quality modular product completed in a fraction of the time of site-built construction, cities and towns can rapidly respond to the needs of their citizens. Horizon North’s affordable housing solutions are customizable, providing an option between permanent installation or temporary, transportable structures that can address needs as they arise.

Government Infrastructure

Horizon North’s modular construction solutions are ideal for government agencies focused on significantly reducing waste and carbon footprints while maintaining cost control and time certainty. Building occurs in our off-site manufacturing facility meaning less waste and less disruption to the final site, along with no schedule interruptions due to weather. Our innovative products can be used for assisted living, health services, education centers, and movable military infrastructure.

Hotels

Horizon North’s hospitality clients use modular construction to get guests in the door 30-50% faster than site built construction, meaning a head start on their return on investment. Off-site manufacturing in a temperature-controlled facility means no time delays, a significant reduction in waste, and improved efficiencies, to go along with stringent internal quality control processes. Able to incorporate additional features like indoor swimming pools, waterslides, and restaurants, modular hotel construction presents few limitations when compared to traditional methods, in a fraction of the time.

Senior Housing

Horizon North offers award-winning modular solutions to support senior living for the young at heart. With the ability to pre-fabricate high quality modules in different sizes, we can build for a wide spectrum of uses, including larger senior living facilities and smaller laneway homes designed for aging family members. For our Aboriginal partners, Horizon North’s elders lodge construction emphasizes mobility to help those who have steered our path to age gracefully, and integrates cultural art and symbolism in the design.

Indoor Manufacturing

“The innovative modular building practices we offer to our customers are redefining the vision of construction,” says Joseph (Joe) Kiss, Senior Vice President, Modular Solutions for Horizon North. “Particularly in regions that see an abundance of remote locations and unpredictable weather, as is the case in much of Canada, the value that we offer to customers is rooted in the indoor manufacturing environment, which offers inherent advantages over site-built construction,” adds Kiss. “The stringent quality assurance and control processes we have in place ensure a high-quality build. Our lean manufacturing process cuts down significantly on waste and improves efficiencies during construction; then, with much of the work already done, we further reduce our footprint on the final site with less noise, dust and traffic. Our customers’ costs remain on track as time delays due to weather, minimal trade availability, accidents or theft are virtually eliminated.”

“That all of this occurs in a substantially reduced timeframe is perhaps most attractive to our customers, as the construction is ongoing while foundational work is completed on the final site. What developer doesn’t want an opportunity to open their doors faster and start generating a return on the investment they have made?”

“Modular construction is, we believe, simply a better way to build.”

BON APPETIT!

Who doesn’t love a good, chef-prepared meal? One of the key

features for guests staying at a Horizon North open lodge or one of the customer camps where we provide catering services is the nutritious meal selection provided by our culinary teams.

Many of the chefs who lead those teams have spent nearly their entire working lives nurturing a love of cooking in one way or another. We are pleased to tell the stories of three of our chefs, paired with a favourite recipe of their choosing. Bon appetit!

Cuban Style Roast Pork Shoulder with Mojo Sauce - Jeremy Cloutier, Iosegun Lake Lodge

Born, raised and still commuting from London, Ontario, I was 15 years old when I got my first culinary job at Red Lobster. I learned there that gas grills don’t use charcoal from the basement, and a bacon stretcher is just a tool to confuse the new guy.

Over the course of my career, I have had the good fortune to work in high-end establishments, pubs and good old-fashioned steakhouses. It is creativity that drives what I do, and being able to work with so many people with different experiences and backgrounds. It allows me to help others develop new skills while learning constantly myself.

I started with Horizon North in 2014 and I have had some of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I enjoy meeting great people, taking on new challenges, putting smiles on faces and, of course, filling bellies.

The ultimate compliment to me is when one of our guests tells me they have to start going to the gym because they can’t stop eating.

Ingredients:

1 – large 4 or 5 lb boneless pork shoulder2 cups – sour orange, fresh lime or lemon juice1 – large bay leaf2 tsp – dried oregano2 tsp – cumin powder4 tbsp and 1 tsp – coarse sea salt½ tsp – black pepper20 cloves – fresh garlic peeled (cloves can be left whole)½ cup – roast pork pan drippings½ cup – reserved garlic and lime sauce mixture

Cooking Instructions:

The Night Before:

1. With a very sharp boning knife, pierce the roast deeply.

2. Rub with salt, making sure to get into the piercings so that the salt is distributed throughout the roast evenly.

3. After salting, place the pork in a container and leave in refrigerator.

4. In a blender, add the lime/lemon or sour orange juice, garlic cloves, bay leaf, cumin powder, oregano, pepper, 1 tsp salt.

5. Blend on high until all is liquified. This becomes your Cuban Mojo sauce.

6. Pour one cup of the sauce in a jar cover and reserve for later. Pour the rest of the sauce over the pork roast, rubbing the sauce deep into the pork meat and into your piercings.

7. Sprinkle a little more oregano, cumin, and black pepper over the entire roast.

8. Cover and refrigerate until the next day.

The Day Of:

1. Remove pork from the refrigerator. Let stand on the counter for at least one hour, then place the roast fat side up into an oven pre-heated to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not cover with aluminum foil to roast. The fat will brown as it cooks, which is what you want.

2. Roast for 4 to 6 hours, basting your roast every hour with at least a half cup of the reserved mojo sauce.

3. Your roast is done when the juices run clear and the meat is tender. You should be able to gently pull a small piece of meat off with little to no resistance.

4. Add the drippings from your roasting pan to a frying pan over medium heat.

5. Add the onions and fry them with your drippings.6. Take a half cup of the reserved mojo from the refrigerator

and pour it into the onions, sautéing for approx. five minutes.

7. Let stand for five minutes.8. Slice or pull all of your roast. Pour the mojo with onions

all over the meat, mixing it well into all of the pork meat.9. You are ready to serve.

Chiles Rellenos - Ron Schiavone, Kobes Creek Lodge

As with many chefs, my culinary journey began at a young age. At five years old, I remember standing on a kitchen chair helping my father roll meatballs. I began culinary school at 18, working in various restaurants and a maximum-security youth detention center where I found fulfillment in teaching kitchen skills to troubled teens.

After my father’s passing, my passion for cooking faded. I held positions in the financial services industry before deciding to drop everything and move to Mexico. I spent the next nine years immersed in the culture there and met my wife. My passion for cooking was reignited through my wife and her family’s introduction to authentic Mexican cuisine, and collaborating with Executive Chef Ismat Jivani.

I haven’t looked back. I am in my fifth year with Horizon North, running the kitchen at Kobes Creek Lodge in Northeastern BC since its inception two and a half years ago. I love the people at Horizon North – the staff, clients, challenges and successes are all part of my satisfying experience here.

The recipe for Chiles Rellenos is one my wife introduced to me and has become a family favorite

Grilled Pacific Salmon with Cranberry Balsamic Sauce and Wild Rice- Charlie See, Wapiti Lodge

I have been a Red Seal chef for more than 25 years. I began my culinary career in 1987 as a dishwasher at the internationally renowned Sherwood Inn in Muskoka, Ontario, started my apprenticeship in 1989 and achieved my Red Seal through George Brown College in Toronto in 1992.

Through my association with the Sherwood Inn, I was exposed to culinary styles from across Europe, working with chefs from Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and England. My style is heavily influenced by classical French cuisine. From 1992-2004, my work took me across Canada, working at Talisman Mountain Resort near Collingwood, Ontario, Panorama Mountain Resort near Invermere, BC and stops in Banff National Park. I also filled short-term roles onboard the RMS Segwun (the oldest steamship in North America) and the Albany Club of Toronto, founded by Sir John A. Macdonald.

In 2004, the entrepreneurial bug struck, and I went into the catering business in Calgary. For 10 years, I operated as a caterer, launching “See Catering” and then acquiring

and merging with “A Gourmet Affair” catering service. In 2014, I accepted a position as Hospitality Director and Executive Chef at the Rosebud Mercantile and School of the Arts, then decided after two years to pursue a path in the Camp Services field.

I joined the Horizon North team in December 2015 and am currently the Chef at the Wapiti Lodge near Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Preparing the cranberry sauce:

1. Place your ingredients, except the butter, in a pot and simmer on low heat for one hour or until the cranberries are rendered into a smooth sauce with a few recognizable cranberries remaining (for texture). The sauce should be reasonably thick yet pourable to your desired consistency.

2. Stir in ½ lb of whole butter cut into cubes. Adjust your seasoning and final texture with any of salt, pepper, honey and/or vinegar, until you achieve your desired taste.

Preparing the rice:

1. Using wild rice for this dish adds elegance to the finished product. It is rich in fiber and a source of protein, but low in fat and gluten-free.

2. Submerge 5 cups of wild rice in a pot with about 5 liters of water.

3. Bring your rice and water to a boil, then turn down the heat to a low simmer (3-4 setting on your stovetop at home).

4. Cook or simmer for an hour or longer. Cooking times will vary between brands.

5. Cook the rice until all of the individual grains are split open and curling. Your end result should be tender to tooth but still have texture remaining. It is better to overcook wild rice than undercook.

6. When your rice is done, drain the excess liquid and serve. Alternatively, sauté the rice in a dab of butter and seasoning, and add in your favorite vegetables.

Design, manufacturing, transportation, setting, and installation of modular staff accommodations

Overview

The complete turn-key Halfway River community housing project was awarded to Horizon North in September 2016. The scope of the project involved designing, manufacturing, transporting, setting, and installing a six-unit rowhouse for Halfway River First Nation families. The site was cleared in October 2016 and the client turned over a foundation ready for Horizon North to install the building. At the same time, manufacturing of the necessary modules began at Horizon North’s temperature-controlled manufacturing facility in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Craning of the modules onto the foundation occurred in early 2017 along with installation. On-site, a unique roof was built to complete the structure, and possession was handed over to Chief Darlene Hunter of Halfway River First Nation in May 2017. 12 modules make up the single-storey, 6,776 sq ft finished structure, with six two-bedroom units set on an ICF (insulated concrete form) foundation.

First Nations across Western Canada and the North are seeking projects which design a better quality of life for Aboriginal communities, families, and individuals. Horizon North’s modular construction solutions, built on best practices from the manufacturing industry, provide high quality buildings including multi-family residential spaces, elders lodges, and commercial hotel and office spaces. The completed structures realize significant time savings and are virtually indistinguishable from conventional construction methods.

SOIL SOLUTIONS

The stability and accessibility of project sites, no matter the circumstances, is critical to our customers’ work. Weather, terrain and

soil quality can be challenges, requiring solutions that will ensure a project succeeds. Horizon North’s innovative soil solutions emphasize safety, quality, schedule and budget in providing sites with the reliable foundation needed to complete the project at hand.

Frost Ripping (Top Soil Stripping)

In frost ripping, soil is tilled during the winter months (mid-November to mid-March) to help ease construction and excavation. This is typically undertaken for pipelines and utilities on farmland. Our equipment tills at the desired depth in a single pass through automatic adjustments, leaving a stronger, well-groomed area with a defined separation of soils. This minimizes the chance of mixing topsoils, subsoils and clays, and helps to avoid the loss of soil nutrients that is common with machines that require multiple passes to achieve depths. Our solution reduces costs in machine hours as well as payments to farmers and land owners for crop production loss.

Agricultural Land Breaking

Horizon North offers a final land breaking procedure when de-forestation of new agricultural land is completed. That procedure annihilates organics in the soil such as roots, small stumps and saplings, leaving the agricultural land ready for seeding more than a year sooner than conventional methods.

An Exceptional Experience

At Horizon North, we provide an exceptional experience in everything we do. We believe in first-time quality that provides unmatched customer satisfaction. Visit our website to learn more about the soil solutions we offer or to request more information.

/INDUSTRIAL SERVICES

Soil Stabilization

Completed in our Canadian climate between May and October, soil stabilization is a process that changes the properties of soil to improve its strength and durability. Our soil stabilization mixture blends pulverized soil material and engineered measured amounts of chemical additive and water, compacted to high density. As the chemical additive hydrates, the mix becomes strong, durable and frost-resistant.

Before our team starts any work on a site, we take samples of the soil in that area to perform quality testing. Those tests identify the soil’s characteristics and point us to the appropriate solution for the project. Whatever the correct solution, our options all have the following advantages:

• Cost – The maintenance costs associated with a project are lower.

• Schedule – Expediting the drying of soils through chemical additives creates efficiencies.

• Permeability – The amount of fluid that can pass through the soil is reduced or eliminated entirely.

• Strength – The bearing capacity and shear strength of the soil is improved.

• Durability – The soil’s handling of freeze/thaw cycles is improved.

In addition to soil stabilization, we offer several other soil solutions that may be the right fit for a project:

Aggregate Stabilization (Dust Control)

Our aggregate stabilization process, completed between May and October, rehabilitates and extends the life of an unpaved road segment by mixing the existing aggregate with liquid stabilization agents. Those agents enhance the strength of the surface and provide resistance to deteriorating elements like dust, potholes, wash boarding and loose aggregate from traffic and weather.

Road Recycling and Reclamation

To reduce maintenance costs or upgrade road segments, Horizon North provides reclamation techniques that use existing road surface material to enhance the identified space. Soil samples are used to determine the appropriate treatment. After the correct treatment is applied, the road segments can be left as gravel or surfaced with asphalt to complete the maintenance. The reclamation work is typically done between May and October.

Design, manufacturing, transportation, setting, and installation of modular townhomes and condos.

Overview

This complete turn-key project to provide housing as part of the Mackenzie Village community development in Revelstoke, British Columbia was awarded to Horizon North in March 2017. The scope of the project involved drafting support, engineering, manufacturing, transporting, setting, and installing six apartment complexes and one townhome complex as part of a new development between Revelstoke’s core and the town’s popular ski resort.

After contract signing, Horizon North set to work manufacturing the 49 required modules in our temperature-controlled facility in Kamloops, British Columbia. At the same time, foundational work was occurring on-site, helping to significantly

reduce the project’s schedule when compared to conventional site-built construction.

Craning of the modules and installation occurred over the course of Fall 2017. On December 22, 2017, the first occupants accepted the keys to their Horizon North-built home. 49 modules make up the seven individual structures; the six apartment complexes are made up of units ranging from 697 sq ft to 1,045 sq ft, while the townhome units are each 1,635 sq ft. Each apartment and townhome unit includes an energy-efficient building envelope with additional high-density insulation on the exterior side of the wall, and triple pane windows.

To maximize their return on investment, residential developers are seeking ways to control costs and ensure timetable certainty on their projects, as delays due to weather or a shortage of workers result in higher costs for both the developer and home buyers. The strict control measures in place help to create an end product that is high

HORIZON NORTH’S CAMP OPERATIONS

A lodge manager from Brandon, a sous-chef from Vancouver Island, and two camp attendants

from Edmonton and a First Nations community in BC walk into a camp…

It sounds like the set up for a witty one-liner, but it’s actually the reality for several hundred employees working in the dozens of camps that Horizon North operates. Few other workplaces see a group of people from widespread regions get together, in person, to run a successful operation. The unique aspects of camp employment – remote locations and rotational shifts among them – make it possible and, in fact, necessary.

A visit to a client-owned camp south of Fort McMurray where Horizon North provides lodge management, catering, housekeeping and janitorial services gives an idea of ‘camp life’ and the stories of the people who make a living in their ‘home away from home’.

– Camp Attendants

“Nervous and a bit scared” is how Sara Willier and Shaylee Jack both describe the first time they left Horizon North’s Edmonton office for the first shift of their camp jobs. That was in December 2017 for Sara and July 2017 for Shaylee. Now, the two fast friends, who first met on the staff bus to camp, are seen as young leaders within the camp attendant team, the group responsible for ensuring guest rooms are a comfortable space for clients.

The nervousness about what awaited them in camp was to be expected as neither had any camp experience. Sara had some housekeeping experience, and Shaylee had only heard stories from a cousin who was working in the kitchen at a camp. Adding to Shaylee’s nerves was that she would be the youngest person on her team.

Now, the two women are thriving in camp. Their rotation starts on a Monday, with a 6 a.m. arrival at the Horizon North office for a safety briefing and an overview of camp goings-on. At 7 a.m., the bus leaves the office and begins the five-hour journey to their camp. Almost immediately upon arrival, the team gets to work for their first shift, putting in five hours on a typical first day. The remainder of their rotation is 10-hour shifts, starting at 9 a.m. and finishing at 7:30 p.m. with a half-hour break.

As their two-week rotation moves through its cycle, the camp attendants’ duties shift from ensuring guest washrooms are neat and tidy to ensuring all check-out rooms – guests who have ended their rotation and left camp – are clean and prepared for new guests to arrive. Once these jobs are done for the day, the focus turns to linen changes for the rooms that need the once-weekly service.

Knowing that the group coming in on a new rotation is going to be tired from an early morning and long drive, the camp attendants look out for each other. During their last shift, they get as many things done as possible for the new team so that their first day back on the job is short and

– Sous-Chef

At first glance, a remote camp near Fort McMurray seems a long way from a 25-year career working at high-end resorts. By sheer distance it is, but Chris Thrift, a Horizon North sous-chef, sees a lot of similarities between the two when it comes to the overall goal. “Camp food doesn’t have to be low-end food,” Chris says. “My philosophy is we can make great, world-class food here and I’m proud that Horizon North agrees.”

On the job since December 2017, Chris is settling in to his first taste of camp life quite nicely. “I work the same hours as I did in the Fairmonts of the world,” he says, “with the advantage that when I’m away from work and back on the island, I’m not going to be called in.”

easy. That extra work is something they know will be done in return when they go through the same thing coming back from their week away. It’s a little thing, but it points to the unique team atmosphere that exists in a camp.

Just as it is throughout Horizon North, a key focus in camp is safety. Sara summarizes it this way: “Camp life wears off on you. Even when I go home, I say to myself ‘that’s a hazard’ when I see something I’ve been trained to avoid.” Shaylee quickly agrees: “I used to leave things plugged in when I went out, but not anymore. It’s the little things that you take home with you.”

Asked what they enjoy about camp life, Sara and Shaylee take turns listing off several items.

“I like the fact that I get up, get ready, walk out the door and my job is right there,” says Shaylee.

“I know it’s not in every camp, but the extras on this site are good for the times we’re not working,” adds Sara. “I like video games so having them set up in the rec room, along with other games like pool, is fun.”

‘The island’ is Vancouver Island, where he lives with his family, including two young children. Like Sara and Shaylee, Chris works two weeks on and one week off, catching a flight from Comox, BC to Edmonton on Sunday night so he is ready for his Monday morning trip to camp. As soon as the bus arrives back in Edmonton at the end of his rotation, he is on the reverse flight to Comox to spend the week with his family.

A sous-chef’s rotation in camp begins with twelve-hour day shifts before moving to night shifts of the same length for the second week. About four and a half hours of a day shift sees the team preparing that night’s fresh dinner for clients. Other duties on the day shift include tidying up from breakfast, ensuring the 24-hour food and drink service is stocked, and taking part in the 1 p.m. safety toolbox meeting. The 15-minute meeting covers a key safety topic to keep in mind and sees the staff discussing any recent hazard identifications and the corrective measures taken.

When the rotation moves over to the night shift, Chris takes on supervisory responsibilities. He spends roughly three and a half hours at the start of his shift preparing hot boxes for clients to take as lunch to their work site. That is followed by preparations for the night shift’s 1 a.m. safety toolbox meeting, after which the remaining time is spent getting ready for the morning’s breakfast rush from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Given the volume of food served, Chris and the team do prep work as much in advance as possible for meals. Roughly two days out from a meal, they begin any tasks they can, so their attention in the hours leading up to breakfast or dinner is focused on preparation of high-quality, fresh food.

“Where people new to a camp kitchen can get overwhelmed,” Chris cautions, “is not understanding just how much food and how much work goes into a meal for 900 people. That initial shock can be a difficult adjustment, but we have built a great core group of people that have all gone through that learning curve successfully and know what it takes. Now, it’s just part of the job.”

Chris acknowledges the toughest part of being away for two weeks is not being with his family. He looks on the bright side, though, recognizing that tools like FaceTime that weren’t available in the past make it easier to cope because he can still see his family.

Asked about the best parts of camp life, Chris lists the fact there is a gym on site that requires no membership and is accessible at all hours of the day, the ability to listen to music while he works, and perhaps most importantly, the new people he meets every day. “I like hearing people’s stories,” he says, “and we’re so diverse within our own staff and among our clients that if you take the time to talk to people, you learn so many interesting things.”

Like Sara and Shaylee, Chris says the safety culture at Horizon North is like nothing he’s ever seen, from the color-coded cutting boards to prevent cross-contamination, to the speed at which hazards are fixed. “If we do a Hazard ID for something, it gets fixed or corrected right away. The work that is done coaching us on safety really sets us up for success. It might seem like a lot, but I always remember that it’s done for our own benefit.”

- Lodge Manager

Don Griffiths is the Lodge Manager at the camp and describes his role like this: “I’m not the person playing the music. I’m just the maestro at the front ensuring everyone stays together.”

After making clients feel at home in his work as a general manager for a hotel in Fort McMurray, and then overseeing the operations of 23 hotels in the Arctic, Horizon North’s philosophy of providing a home away from home for our many clients was a perfect fit for Don. He also had the benefit of one previous taste of camp life, managing a facility near Fort Hills before joining Horizon North in July 2017.

In that previous two-year camp stint, Don made a truly unique choice that would be impossible in most regular circumstances. He would travel on his weeks off – an all-inclusive resort here, a few days in Vegas there – rather than calling a specific place ‘home’. Now, though, Don lives in Brandon, Manitoba, commuting to Calgary and then Edmonton on the Sundays prior to the start of his rotation. On Monday morning, he takes the client-owned charter plane to camp to begin his two weeks of work.

The similarities of this role with Don’s previous hotel work are easy to see: managing budgets, overseeing client relations, and leading the housekeeping, guest services, food services and recreation teams. The differences between a hotel and a camp start with the sheer size of the facility. “Where a typical hotel I managed would have anywhere between 150-300 rooms, this camp gets up to 900 active guests right now, and has capacity for about 1,500 people,” Don says. “We do as many check-ins and check-outs some days as I had people in an entire hotel.”

Another key difference is the unique life of rotational staff who find themselves a long way from home. “Compared to my hotel days, the staff here are more like family, and they have to be,” Don observes. “Unlike most people, they don’t go home to their families every night, so for two weeks at a time, this is their family. There are so many different backgrounds, even just in terms of life experience, it’s exciting for me to watch them all work.”

There is so much to like about his job now. Don says. “I get to do what I love – provide exceptional customer service and lead a team of great individuals. There is nothing more rewarding than watching the people that report to me succeed and move forward.”

Like Chris, another benefit to camp life that Don lists is the ability to turn his ‘work mode’ off when he is not in camp. Another lodge manager comes on site when Don is away for his week off, and being three flights away, nobody is going to call him into work.

However, that same remote lifestyle can be a double-edged sword with Don’s responsibilities. “If something happens to one of our team members, if they get sick for example, I can’t just call someone in to help out. We all have to pitch in and make do until the next rotation comes in.”

The Right Attitude

Sara, Shaylee, Chris and Don have all seen team members come and go from their camp. After nine months of Horizon North overseeing operations at the camp, though, a core team has emerged that sees little to no change as employees grow accustomed to the more unusual aspects of camp life and start to excel.

For those who might be thinking of a camp job, Don captures the group’s advice best:

“It’s unique, it’s hard work, but with the right frame of mind, it can be great work.”

“You need to want to be there, and you need to come with an open mind. Even if you have worked in a camp before, you need to recognize that no two camps are exactly alike, and you need to find a way to settle into the team and the life. Thinking of a camp job as the golden goose will get you nowhere.”
