Welcome to Hollywood Park Nursery School.

This pack aims to provide general information about the Nursery and outlines

some of the facilities available for children and families.

As Parents and Carers, you are your child’s first educators and you provide

important continuity for the child. We believe that by working together,

sharing views, knowledge and experiences we help children and their families to

gain maximum advantage from the facilities on offer.

We aim to provide the best opportunities for your children to learn in a

challenging but secure environment.

We are sure you and your children will enjoy your time with us.

THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS)

At Hollywood Park Nursery School, we aim to provide a broad, balanced and

differentiated curriculum which follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework

(Revised 2012).

The EYFS sets standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to

five. The four themes and principles which should shape practice are:

- A Unique Child

- Positive Relationships

- Enabling Environment

- Learning and Development

THE AREAS OF LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

There are seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational

programmes in Early Years settings. Three are Prime Areas and four are Specific Areas:

The 3 Prime Areas are:

Personal, Social and Emotional development;

Communication and Language;

Physical Development;

The 4 Specific Areas are:

Literacy;

Mathematics;

Understanding the World;

Expressive Arts and Design

For more information on the EYFS go to:

www.foundationyears.org.uk or

www.education.gov.uk/publications/standard/AllPublications/Page1/DFE-00023-2012

THE COMPETENT LEARNER

At Hollywood Park NS we recognise that every child is a competent learner from birth

and that young children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. Each

child is unique; with unique needs and interests.

Building positive relationships is crucial to children becoming strong and independent and

for this reason each child is allocated to a ‘Key Person’ who is responsible for supporting

their learning and development.

The ‘Key Person’ is responsible for ensuring each child’s individual profile and Learning

Journey is completed to show the child is progressing. THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY

High quality play, both indoors and outdoors underpins all development and learning for

young children. Although most children play spontaneously, some children may need

adult support to develop play skills.

Through play, in a secure and challenging environment and with effective adult support,

children can:

Explore, develop and represent learning experiences

that help them make sense of the world;

Practice and build up ideas, concepts and skills;

Learn how to understand the need for rules;

Take risks and make mistakes;

Think creatively and imaginatively;

Communicate with others as they investigate or

solve problems.

PLANNING FOR LEARNING

Children have a natural curiosity; a need to explore, communicate, create, investigate

and learn. They learn best when they are following their own interests and the adults

around them respond sensitively to these interests.

At Hollywood Park NS, the children are central to the planning process. We

continually observe the children in their play and use these observations to plan their

‘next steps and opportunities’.

You, as Parents and Carers, are your children’s first teachers and we want to include

you in this planning process. Each term your child will focus child and a form will be

sent home for you to tell us if there are important events happening in your child’s life

such as birthdays, holidays.

This means that all staff observe the ‘focus’ children over the week so that evidence

can be built up of their interests and the activities they like to do at Nursery. All of

this information is included in your child’s Learning Journey and is a unique reflection

of your child’s interests, progress and development during his/her time in the

Nursery.

At Hollywood Park NS, we provide experiences/activities which follow the child’s

interests, stimulate and structure learning and bring about progression appropriate to

each child’s needs and abilities. Our planning is a continuous cycle and is constantly

under review.

Discussion takes place with the whole nursery team. Weekly forecasts are made which

consider a review of the past week, the interests of the children as well as any

identified future needs of the children individually or as a group. A short daily review

may alter some of the weekly planning as necessary to cater for children’s immediate

needs and interests.

It is the responsibility of the teachers to collate the plans to ensure a balance of

provision.

Although the children’s interests are uppermost in our planning process, we also

include experiences/activities related to the seasons, relevant celebrations and

festivals, life cycles, visitors and visits.

The children also spend time each day with their ‘Key Person’ group. This group time

focuses on developing more specific skills, concepts and knowledge.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Hollywood Park Nursery School welcomes involvement from Parents/Carers and we

aim to make the atmosphere inviting. We encourage a two way exchange of

information passed on a daily basis. We would welcome any observations or points of

view that Parents/Carers wish to put forward.

There are Parent/Carers notice boards in various places throughout the

nursery.

We keep you informed of forth coming events and activities by newsletters

and posters.

A comfortable Community room is available for you to use.

On occasions you will be invited to special events such as fund raising, concerts and

open days. Your support on these occasions is always appreciated.

Each child’s achievements are recorded in their Learning Journey and throughout the

year we will invite you to discuss your child’s progress with their ‘Key Person’. To

ensure progress we assess children on entry and again when they leave.

A personal reflection on each child’s time in the Nursery is written by their ‘Key

Person’ and sent to the relevant Primary School when they leave.

We are always available to meet with you at the beginning and end of the day but if

you want to speak with a specific person, where possible, it is better to make an

appointment.

Parents/Carers have representation on the Governing Body which meets once a term.

SETTLING IN PROCESS

Every child is different and the settling in process is personal to that child. We

endeavour to settle the children as quickly as possible, during the first two weeks

of your child’s time at Hollywood Park NS. We have a gradual settling in process,

which is to enable your child to familiarise themselves with the staff and the

building. It also gives you time to speak to staff and fill in relevant forms to give

us the information we need.

You are expected to stay with your child for at least the first two sessions. We have a

Community room where you can make yourself a drink and be on the premises but away

from your child. There are no hard and fast rules after the first two days as each child

settles in at a different rate.

Throughout the gradual admission procedure we will be working closely with you to

ensure a happy start to your child’s nursery life.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

We can be flexible in children’s starting time but it is very important that you arrive at

Nursery before 9.30 am at the very latest.

Please do not arrive at Nursery before 9.15 am in the morning or before your child’s

finishing time of 2.15 pm as this can be disruptive to the session.

If someone other than yourself is picking up your child, please ensure that you have

informed a member of staff. Children need to be brought to, and collected from

Nursery by an adult; that is someone over of 16 years of age.

NURSERY FUND

Our Nursery Fund is a voluntary contribution. We rely very heavily on

Parents/Carers’ generosity to help finance many things in the Nursery School

which would otherwise not be possible.

All expenditure from the Nursery Fund is for the benefit of the Nursery School or in

respect of an activity as required by the 1988 Education Reform Act.

The many things we use funds for include the following:

Photographs for children’s Learning Journey books

Home loan books

Developing various areas within the Nursery eg: garden

Children’s celebrations

Curriculum areas

We are very grateful for any such contributions and will let you know from time to time

how the money has been spent.

We would suggest £1.00 per week for a voluntary contribution but there is no obligation

and no pupil will be treated differently if Parents/Carers choose not to do so.

The Nursery School has a ‘Charging Policy’ and you will be asked to sign that you have

read it.

BOOK LENDING LIBRARY

We have a Library area for children to borrow books to share at home. The children visit

the Library to choose books with their parents on arrival at Nursery. We hope that you

will make use of this facility as a child who enjoys looking at and sharing books will be

much more enthusiastic about reading.

TOYS

Although we appreciate that children may need the security of bringing a favourite toy

during the settling in process, we would ask that children are encouraged to leave their

toys at home as soon as possible. Toys sometimes get lost or damaged and children

therefore find this upsetting.

CLOTHING

It is important that children wear comfortable, easily manageable clothing to Nursery.

We encourage children to become increasingly independent and it is therefore a great

asset if they are able to manage their own clothes when they go to the toilet and put their

coat on to go outside.

Although children wear aprons when involved in creative activities there is always the possibility of

getting paint or clay on clothing. Therefore please do not send children to the Nursery in ‘special

clothes’.

We do hope that children will wear our Hollywood Park NS uniform.

Clothing should be clearly marked with your child’s name as this avoids loss and confusion.

Shoes: As children are encouraged to spend a great deal of time involved in outdoor

activities it is important that they wear comfortable and sensible shoes, preferably with a

non slip sole and a Velcro fastening. This will enable them to ride the tricycles, climb and

run safely without slipping. Again, children should not come to nursery in their ‘best’

shoes.

Jewellery is not allowed because of the possibility of accidents particularly with

necklaces, bracelets and hooped earrings. (Studs can be worn in pierced ears) We can

accept no responsibility for loss or damage in relation to jewellery, clothes or shoes.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

All children are offered a third pint of milk each day and a drink of water is always

available. We do ask that children do not bring snacks such as crisps and sweets to the

Nursery.

From September 2014, the Nursery has no longer been able to provide cooked lunches for

children. All children will need to bring a healthy packed lunch.

If you think your child may be entitled to free meals please see the Administration Manager for a

form. A requirement for free meals is that you are receiving ‘Income Support’ or ‘Job Seekers

Allowance – Income Based’. The Nursery will provide a packed lunch for those children who are

entitled to free school meals.

PAYMENTS FOR ADDITIONAL PROVISION

All payments for Additional Provision: Additional Hours: ‘Before and After School Care’ and/or

Additional Days should be placed in a named envelope and you will be given a receipt for this

money.

** PLEASE NOTE ** All monies MUST be paid in advance.

MEDICINES

The Nursery should be informed if your child has an on-going medical condition such as asthma.

Once your child is admitted to the Nursery, you will be asked to complete an Individual Healthcare

Plan for your child.

Medicine for certain medical conditions, such as asthma, can be administered in Nursery providing

you complete a ‘Consent Form for Medication’ and clearly label the medicine with your child’s name

and the dosage required.

All medication MUST be handed over to a member of staff to be stored securely. A record is kpt

of the medicine given.

Antibiotics should be given at home and your child well recovered before returning to

school. Further information is available in the Nursery ‘Medical Conditions in Schools Policy’ and ‘Policy for

the Administration of Medication’.

PARKING

As with many schools, the parking of cars at Hollywood Park CNC is an issue. We would

ask you not to park in the staff car park but to park on the road.

It is important to remember that it is an offence to stop on a school entrance clearway and any

person found committing this offence can be dealt with by way of a non-endorseable fixed penalty

ticket under the provision of the Traffic Act. This also includes parking on limited and no waiting

lines; ie single and double yellow lines.

The safety of our children is of paramount importance and is our major concern but we would not

wish to see any of our parents receiving parking tickets.

Dear Parents,

Medical Conditions in Schools Policy

As part of our Medical Conditions in Schools policy, we are required to keep up to date

information about individual children’s medical conditions. If your child has a complex health

need, for example: diabetes, anaphylaxis, severe asthma that has required a hospital admission

within the last 12 months or epilepsy with rescue medication then the school needs to be informed

and an Individual Health Plan will need to be completed to record important details about the

condition, triggers, signs, symptoms, medication and other treatments.

Please complete the form below so that we can update our records and send out Individual

Health Plans for completion, if required.

I would also like to take this opportunity to stress that the school can only administer medication

for long term conditions such as asthma and we can only do so if a Medication Permission Form

has been completed and signed to authorise administration of the medication and specify the

exact dosage and times for the medication to be taken. All medication brought into nursery

should be in the original box/packaging which states the dosage and should be clearly marked

with your child’s name.

We regret that we cannot administer antibiotics.

** Please note **

ALL MEDICATION MUST BE HANDED OVER TO THE OFFICE STAFF AND MUST NOT, IN ANY

CIRCUMSTANCES, BE LEFT IN CHILDREN’S BAGS ON THEIR PEGS.

Yours sincerely,

Catherine Armstrong

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

We aim to promote good behaviour by the staff acting consistently towards the children

and taking into consideration individual children’s needs and levels of development. There are certain expectations, determined by safety factors, that children are encouraged to

understand. We expect children to behave with respect for others and the environment and to

respond to instructions appropriately.

Positive behaviour is praised and the children’s efforts are recognised by staff.

If children behave negatively then it is explained to them why such behaviour is inappropriate and

it may be necessary to remove them, for a few minutes, from a situation which is dangerous,

unkind or disruptive to others.

If you would like further information, please ask to see a copy of the Nursery ‘Behaviour

Management’ Policy.

ILLNESS

If your child is ill it is important that you inform us. Parents/Carers are required to keep

their child at home if they have an infectious illness or condition, for example,

conjunctivitis, chicken pox etc.

The Consultant in Communicable Disease Control and the Health Protection Agency issues every

school with guidelines, so please contact us if in doubt.

Any child suffering from diarrhoea or vomiting should be kept at home until they have been

symptom free for 48 hours.

If your child is taken ill whilst at the Nursery every effort will be made to contact you.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Hollywood Park Nursery School is designated as a Resourced Nursery for children

who have Special Educational Needs and for these children we have an extra

allocation of staff. Children may therefore be admitted to the Nursery School who

have already been identified as having Special Educational Needs. We see the

inclusion of children with Special Educational Needs as an important part of our

provision, as we view it as a positive learning experience for all children.

Special Educational Needs may include behaviour difficulties, learning difficulties, speech

and language problems, medical problems and physical disabilities as well as exceptionally

able children.

At Hollywood Park NS we acknowledge the importance of early identification and recognition

of a child’s specific needs in order that a structured programme of support can be

implemented. Staff have a key role to play in the early identification of children with a

range of difficulties and we follow the staged procedure according to the Special Education

Needs Code of Practice.

We liaise on a regular basis with outside agencies such as Speech Therapists, Occupational

Therapists, Physiotherapists, Educational Psychologist, Social Workers and Health Visitors.

The Headteacher, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and staff work as a team to

ensure maximum support. Parents/Carers are encouraged to work in partnership and take an

active role in the child’s individual educational programme.

For further information, please ask to see a copy of the ‘Special Educational Needs’

Policy.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

Young children learn at a very early age the difference of race, gender, physical

abilities, family structures, life styles and experiences. It is our intention that

children recognise that these differences are good and that they develop a positive

self identity and respect for others.

Further information is available in the Nursery School’s ‘Equality and Diversity’

Policy.

SAFEGUARDING AND CHILD PROTECTION

At Hollywood Park NS we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the

welfare of all children, in line with the duty placed on us by section 175 of the

Education Act 2002.

We follow the policies and procedures generated by Stockport’s Local

Safeguarding Children Board.

We strongly believe that all children have the right to feel safe and to be

protected from physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect. Schools have an

important part to play in the detection and prevention of child abuse.

At our Nursery School, Safeguarding encompasses child protection, safer recruitment,

managing allegations against members of staff as well our approach to the Team Around

the Child (TAC) process. It is also supported by our approach to behaviour management,

our response to managing bullying, our response to care and control, our response to

children who are absent from school, our response to the use of technology in school and

our health and safety procedures. These are documented in separate policies.

Throughout our work we have a clear commitment to supporting families. We aim to work

well in partnership with Parents/Carers and any other appropriate agencies to promote the

welfare of our children.

If we are concerned that a child may be at risk from significant harm (abuse) or is being

abused, the Nursery School is required to refer its concerns onto Social Care and the

police if necessary. In some circumstances this may happen without the consent or

knowledge of Parents/Carers.

The Nursery School also has a responsibility to act upon other concerns that they

may have about a child’s welfare in circumstances where there are no suspicions of

child abuse. Examples of this may be when a child is demonstrating inappropriate

behaviour, is involved in bullying, is failing to come to school or where difficulties

at home are having an effect upon the child’s wellbeing. However this list is by no

means exhaustive.

The Nursery School’s ‘Safeguarding Children’ Policy is available should you require

more information.
