YEAR OF MERCY

Excerpts from Pope Francis’ letter on the Year of Mercy We must pay close attention to what St. Paul says if we want to avoid making the same mistake for which he reproaches the Jews of his time: “For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes

from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified” (Rom 10:3-4). God’s justice is his mercy given to everyone as a grace that flows from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus the Cross of Christ is God’s judgement on all of us on the whole world, be-

cause through it he offers us the certitude of love and new life.

WOMEN’S CORNERSTONE 2016

GIFTED WITH GOD’S PEACE & GRACE

GOD'S PEACE

As I face the rising sun,

Feeling its warmth and promise of the new day,

I thank the loving God for gracing me with His peace,

In my home, in my heart, and within the depths of my soul.

Amen

Plant the seed and bring a friend!

Our posture is often a tip-off to our hospitality and rev-erence for the Lord. Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests.

In the Gospel story, Jesus’ friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak.

How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scrip-ture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our broth-ers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards?

Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord’s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him.

Peace, Fr. Frank

Birth Parents Must Take Action to Preserve Their Privacy

For well over a century, the Catholic Church in New Jersey has provided adoption services. Throughout all those years, the Church promised to honor the privacy of birth parents and adopt-ees. That promise of privacy also was assured by law and af-firmed by the State Superior Court. Those promises can no long-er be kept. On May 27, 2014, a new law took effect that will al-low adoptees and certain relatives to request and obtain the names of their biological parents beginning January 1, 2017. Any birth parents who wish to preserve their privacy must submit a Redaction Request Form to the New Jersey Department of Health no later than December 31, 2016. By filing this form, birth parents will be able to keep their names off any documents provided by the State to adoptees or anyone else. The State made the Redaction Request Form public on August 3, 2015. The form can be downloaded at http://nj.gov/health/forms/reg-36c.pdf If you know a person who placed a child in adoption, please tell them that if they do not file a Redaction Request Form, their name and other information could be given to the adoptee. Any-one needing assistance can call a HELPLINE AT 609-989-4809.

GOING ON VACATION?

Visit www.masstimes.org to find a church while on vacation.

GIVE YOUR PRAYER LIFE A BOOST

A rich prayer life is the key to happiness in this life and the next. Enriching our prayer is not always about the prayers we say, how-ever. How we approach our time in prayer can be as important. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:11). When we greet a dear friend we may wave, hug, or say hello. When begin-ning prayer, start by placing yourself in God’s presence and greet him as a dearly loved one. Come as you are. God is the only one in our lives with whom we can be completely ourselves. We don’t need to have special clothing , use flowery language, or fold our hands a certain way. For prayer to work, we just have to bring our whole selves. You will be amazed by what he will do with that. Take time out. “Silence is so lacking in this world which is often too noisy, which is not favorable to recollection and listen-ing to the voice of God.” (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) Find fifteen minutes you can make silent and place God at the center of your attention. Don’t stop with prayer. Prayer helps us to learn God’s will for us. When we act in communion with his will, it is then that our whole life becomes a prayer in action.

RECONNECT WITH FAITH THIS SUMMER

The lazy days of summer can make it tempting to be lazy about prayer and worship but the slower pace of summer makes it a great time to reconnect with the one who loves you most.

Make Mass. There’s no vacation from Mass, even though we are on vacation. In fact admiring churches in new places and par-ticipating in different parish customs can freshen our own out-look. Summer reading. Give beach reading a new meaning. Read a spiritual book of which you may have heard but not yet read. Whether a classic or a more contemporary religious book, reading it during the summer can give you more time to reflect on what you read. Serve. Par ish ministr ies usually suffer from low staffing dur -ing the summer. Call your parish office to see if you can fill in if help is needed
