PARISH CALENDAR FOR THIS WEEK!

Do You Know Someone Going through a Difficult Time?!Do you have a friend, neighbor, co!worker, or relave who has been struggling with the loss of

single parenthood, or any of countless other life challenges? Our Stephen Ministers can

provide them with the focused care, encouragement, and support they need to make it through the crisis. If you know of

someone who is hurng, talk with one of our Stephen Leaders: Emily (224!6296) or Michelle 727!1757). They can talk with

you about how we can connect the person you know with one of our Stephen Ministers. It’s a great way for you to show

how much you care!

A MOMENT WITH TODAY’S SCRIPTURES!

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER!

This Sunday's Gospel is known as the "priestly prayer" of

Jesus. The enre passage is Jesus entrusng us to the Father.

"When I was with them I protected them ? I guarded them,"

Jesus says. He asks his Father, "Keep them in your name." In

this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our

life as Chrisans in the world. He ancipates struggle for the

believer. He describes it in strong words, words that could

even appear frightening to the believer. "I gave them your

word, and the world hated them." Not only that, but with

our eyes on eternal life, we "do not belong to the world."

And yet in the midst of those realies, Jesus doesn't take us

out of the world. On the contrary, "as you sent me into the

world, so I sent them into the world."

Chrisans live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus o=en

defies nice, neat categories. We uphold jusce as virtue yet

are invited to love our enemies. We offer gi=s and generous

hospitality to others while being reminded of the value of

temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and

wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It

can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a

Church that preaches moral perfecon can easily fall under

scruny when it falls short.

In the midst of these complicaons, Jesus offers a

message of hope. He is well aware of the contradicons into

which he sends us, and his Father will equip us accordingly.

"Consecrate them in truth."

"Keep them from the evil

one." Jesus does not

abandon us to the tensions

of our me but remains near

at hand by the grace alive in

his Church.

PARISH COUNCIL CORNER!This month we honor our heavenly mother, our

Blessed Virgin Mary. It is especially appropriate to think

of her on Mother’s Day, for she is our mother as well as

the Mother of Jesus.

She can surely idenfy with every mother, because

of all she went through during her life. I hope that you

can idenfy with her, and receive from her the

consolaon and inspiraon that only a mother can give.

I can’t imagine being her and going through all she

had to endure. It started with being pregnant before

marriage and having to ride a donkey on a long trip to

Bethlehem. Must have been very uncomfortable.

Surprising that the baby survived in her womb. Then

having to give birth in a stable or cave. A=er the baby

was born, they had to flee the country because the local

ruler started killing all the neighbor babies out of fear. I

wonder if she knew some of the mothers of the babies

that were slain. I can’t imagine having to carry that

burden.

One might think Mary was not happy that Jesus

chose the career of being an inerant preacher, having

to rely on other people’s generosity for food and shelter.

He could have been successful in the carpentry business,

made good money and sll preached. Or He could have

gone to rabbinical school and been a cerfied scholar.

Mary had to live through every mother’s nightmare.

She outlived her child. She had to witness Him being

publicly humiliated, beaten and put to death as a

criminal. It doesn’t get much worse than that. Do you

think she can idenfy with our pain?

Somehow, Mary made it through all this and held it

together. She had to have the ulmate trust in God that

things would work out for the best. She had to have

trusted her son. I’m sure Jesus appeared to her a=er His

resurrecon. She was with the apostles at Pentecost to

help and serve them as only a mother could.

Many believe Mary rered to Ephesus to live out

the rest of her days. I am sure she was emoonally spent

and needed a lot of me to recover and ponder it all.

Throughout history, a=er Jesus, Mary has occasionally

appeared to common everyday folk, to encourage and

exhort us to pray, fast and give of our me and talent.

She is a wonderful and beauful mediator for us. A

mother for us. And someday we will get to meet and

thank her.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK!

Prayer is essenal to Chrisan living and decision making.

The goal of prayer is really rather simple. By prayer we can

deepen our love and desire for God and increase our

knowledge and understanding of God's uncondional love

for us. Prayer is not about acquiring this or that or

convincing God to act on our behalf. Prayer is the way we

begin the process of change, of coming to see as God sees

and realize that God's presence permeates all God has

created. If we strive to develop this life of prayer, then Jesus

naturally will become our way, our truth and our life. We can

then live in the world as he would live in the world.

2. Also, during our Dr. Seuss author study, we

read a lesser known story called Bartholomew

and the Oobleck. Oobleck was something that

was green, gross, and sticky. We tried making

it and used our senses to describe it. It was

green, gross, and sticky!!

3. Our school is lucky enough to have Math

and Movement mats. We used them to help us

learn to count 100 by 1’s and 10’s.!

This time of year is always so busy for the

students! We are trying to wrap up everything

that the students need to know before going

into 1st grade, taking field trips, and exploring

all the things we have already learned. Some of

the exciting things we have done this year that

stick out to us were:!

1.! Making “Fizzy Green Eggs”. When we

were reading Green Eggs and Ham during

our Dr. Seuss author study, we decided to

see what would happen when we made

“green eggs” out of water and baking soda

and added vinegar to them. We loved

watching the reaction as they mixed

together to release Carbon Dioxide!!

ARMED FORCES DAY

MAY 19!Almighty & eternal God, !

We invoke your blessings upon the members of

our American military forces, those brave men and

women whose courage and commitment to that for

which this country stands protects us all. !

Whether by air, land or sea; wherever their orders

take them, we ask, dear God, that they be protected

within your sheltering presence. Shield them from

harm and from pain, assuage their loneliness, and

sustain their faith in the face of the formidable

enemies that they confront. May all of their efforts be

crowned with victory, and the assurance that we who

depend on their courage appreciate and understand

the great difficulty of their work.!

Most of all, we pray what for all soldiers is the

ul!mate prayer that they be privileged to return to

the loving arms of their families and a grateful country

safely, speedily, and in good health. Because of their

courage, may we all be privileged to know and savor

the blessings of true peace and security. Amen.!

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP!

Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments!

In the Church, we observe a liturgical calendar

that takes us through the life of Jesus and highlights

fundamental doctrines of our faith. Starng with

this Sunday, our observance of the Easter Season

connues for one more week unl the celebraon

of Pentecost. While many outside of the Church

only see Easter as a one!day celebraon, we

celebrate for an enre season, much like we do

during Christmas as well. Of course, this calendar

only serves to remind us and point to greater

realies.

We are not called to be more generous at

Easter or Christmas than we are on other days. We

do not choose to love more during one me of the

year. The fact is that Jesus is alive right now and at

all mes is calling us to give of ourselves.

When we make an intenonal decision to

follow Jesus and adopt a stewardship way of life,

we commit ourselves to this journey 365 days a

year. We are an Easter people at all mes. The high

and low points of our journey are not ed to a

liturgical year, but instead to our own experiences

of life and shortcomings. A season or holiday may

make it easier to have a giving a*tude, but we

need to do the same when li+le around us is

poinng us in that direcon. It is somemes when

few are paying a+enon that love and generosity

are most needed.!
