the church exists not only to en-

joy its own fruit, but to see the

growth of disciples multiplying

into more disciples.

That said, we do en-

courage Disciples to become

members. Membership is re-

quired in order to participate in

voting procedures of our congre-

gation. Membership also shows

commitment to the mission and

ministry. All prospective new

members are required to attend

our “Discovering Our Redeemer”

course, which introduces you to

Jesus’ teaching, The Lutheran

Church Missouri Synod, and Our

Redeemer Lutheran. Maybe you

are interested in church member-

ship, or maybe you are just curi-

ous about what we teach, believe,

and confess here. Either way, you

are encouraged to attend Discov-

ering Our Redeemer this Fall.

August is a busy

month. But I find myself antici-

pating September. Starting on

September 8 Our Redeemer will

be going to two services. There is

a lot of work to be done to pre-

pare for this change. Part of that

work also includes preparing to

offer a special series called Discov-

ering Our Redeemer beginning

on Rally Sunday.

Discovering Our Re-

deemer is the name of the “New

Members” class that I will be

using in the future. I tested the

course with one of the small

groups this spring and it went

very well. Both prospective new

members and some veteran mem-

bers all seemed to enjoy it. I

would like to offer this class as

our weekly Bible Study for nine

weeks in the Fall. ALL MEM-

BERS are being asked to commit

to this class as a refresher as you

get to know our Redeemer Jesus

better, but also Our Redeemer

Church better. Prospective new

members are invited to attend

this class as the pathway to be-

coming a voting member at Our

Redeemer. Please plan to set

aside one extra hour per week to

meet with your church family to

re-discover Our Redeemer.

Topics for this class will

include:

* It is all about discipleship.

* What’s so distinctive about

being Lutheran?

* The significance of the Bible.

* Our new life with God.

about our giving?

A couple of years ago

we had an “emergency” door

offering for Missionary Bernie

Lutz who was in Sudan and need-

ed to buy an ox to support villag-

ers there. It was a proud moment

when I was able to announce that

we received enough to buy almost

3 oxen.

More recently, I was

asked by the organization “Faith

Coomes By Hearing” to receive a

special offering for Bible Memory

Sticks to be sent overseas to our

troops. I reluctantly agreed think-

ing that I would be satisfied with

a couple hundred dollars. We

sent over three thousand!

In many ways this con-

gregation is so very generous. But

when I see the numbers below,

and how far behind our budget

we are, I get a little concerned.

DON’T SKIP OVER

THIS PAGE! I wonder some-

times how many people read the

newsletter. I’ve often wondered if

I should put a challenge before

the congregation, “If you read this

article, let me know.” That way I

could estimate how many people

actually read the newsletter. The

financial page is the place I won-

der about the most. After all,

church and finances just don’t

mix. At least, that’s what some

Christians would have you be-

lieve. But what does the Bible say

about that?

Paul writes in 2 Corin-

thians 8:7, “But as you excel in

everything- in faith, in speech, in

knowledge, in all earnestness, and in

our love for you- see that you excel in

this act of grace also.” What was

the act of grace to which Paul

referred? Material giving.

Paul encouraged the

Corinthians not to focus only on

those parts of discipleship that

seem pious and “spiritual”. Faith,

speech, and knowledge are worthy

areas to work on growing as disci-

ples of Jesus. It makes us feel

good when we get glimpses of

stronger faith. It helps us to feel

like we are becoming more like

Christ when we speak like him.

And, balanced out with Paul’s

warning that knowledge puffs up,

knowing God’s word also helps us

to feel like we are growing in our

ability to communicate the Word

more effectively. These are all

areas in which disciples should

focus their attention. But what

about giving?

YES! An important

part of discipleship is learning to

share our material blessings with

others. When people talk about

mention the friendliness of the

people, the inspirational worship,

the focus on God’s Word, or the

work done through our minis-

tries. But what could be said

This is the report as it is given by the treasurer from our Shepherd’s Staff program for tracking church finances and membership data. The column that you especially want to notice is the Year to date Actual income minus the Total Expenses Actual, which gives us a surplus of $15,527.96 This means that we are spending wisely the resources that God has given us to manage. However, notice that we are almost $25,000 short of what we need to meet our budget. The budget is only a tool used to help us manage God’s resources. We certainly don’t want to tremble in fear when we see such a huge shortfall. But it should make us wonder why we are so behind. Is God getting our very best? Do we expect that our gifts will help grow the church? Or do we give what we think the church needs to “get by?” These are tough questions that each one must ask him/herself. Let’s not forget to give God our very best.

For years Our Redeem-

er has wrestled with the idea of

having two services. Evidence

from church growth experts sug-

gests that when a sanctuary is

about 80% full, growth stops

because the “comfort” level of the

worshippers is affected. There are

only two options to fix this prob-

lem. 1. Add space. 2. Add time.

The quote to add space to our

sanctuary several years ago was

over a million dollars. I think its

safe to say that isn’t going to hap-

pen. Adding a second service is

the only option we have if we

want to have overall growth in

worship attendance.

Our goal as disciples at

Our Redeemer is to grow more

disciples. That happens two ways

by adding a second service. First,

it encourages more people to be in

worship on a Sunday morning

hearing God’s Word. Second, it

gives more people an opportunity

to use their gifts in worship. We

will need people to step up and

help with communion set up,

music leading, technology team,

greeters and ushers, readers, etc.

This is an exciting time.

It will be fun to see how God is

going to bless these changes. Of

course, with all change there is

accompanying loss. Each of us

will have to struggle to adjust to

what we perceive as loss. One

9AM service has been a comforta-

ble place for many of us to be

nurtured and grow in faith. It

may take some time to mourn the

loss of that 9 AM start time, rela-

tionships with people who choose

a different service, the feeling of a

full sanctuary, etc. But God will

help to comfort us during this

transition time.

There are challenges to

overcome as we move forward

with these plans. I recently met

with those leaders involved in our

worship to address some of those

challenges. I was encouraged by

their enthusiasm and willingness

to trust that God will direct us

through this change. Please be

patient as we work through this

transition.

Some things to help you

know what to expect this Fall:

• Changes will take effect on

Rally Sunday, September 8,

2013.

• Rally Sunday will kick off

with the church picnic at

Tioga Beach on Saturday,

Sept. 7 from 4-7PM.

• The first service will not

change in format from what

we currently do.

• The Wednesday service will

not change from what we

currently do.

• We’ve added an every Sun-

day fellowship time in the

Fellowship Hall. Coffee and

donuts will be provided to

encourage sit-down visits

with church family and

friends.

• Education Hour moves up

an hour, but remains basical-

ly the same.

• The 2nd Sunday will still be

“Youth Sunday”. And Cin-

namon rolls are still the 4th

Sun.

from this event are going to sup-

port their mission trip to Tanzania

next Summer. Would you be

willing to volunteer to help serve

Narthex of the church.

We are also collecting

used eyeglasses in a basket in the

Narthex. We have been asked to

collect up to 3000 eyeglasses to be

shipped over to Tanzania. We

will be working with an eye doctor

to perform vision checks and fit

people for glasses. This will also

afford us the opportunity to share

the Gospel with those we meet at

the eye clinic.

We are also receiving

donations for Bibles to ship over

to Tanzania. Most people do not

have access to a personal Bible in

their native Swahili language. We

will be able to purchase and deliv-

er Bibles for the on site missionar-

ies to give the Word away to

Christians they encounter. If you

would like to make an offering for

this purpose please get it to Ron

Evenson in the church office.

the economy is good, my choices

don’t always reflect a heart of

gratitude for all that God has

done. The economy doesn’t keep

me from buying $5.00 coffee

drinks. It doesn’t keep some of

our members from buying new

boats, campers, and 4 wheelers. It

doesn’t stop the exotic vacations.

Did you know that the

average income for Grand Rapids

is $38,000? Based on our budget

and membership our members

give annually less than 3% of their

salary to the church. Some give

much more and, sadly, some don’t

give anything at all. Let’s all take

time to evaluate how our giving

reflects our discipleship so that we

can learn to excel in the grace of

giving.

economy? I wish I could blame it

Wondering how decisions

are made around here?

Sometimes we take for grant-

ed that everyone knows how

things get done. This has

come up recently, and we

want to be as transparent as

possible about who makes

decisions at Our Redeemer.

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, pa�ence, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Gala�ans 5:22 :

Ruby's Pantry had a great 2nd Anniversary! All par�cipants and volunteers

signed one of the two Thank You posters made by Krys�ne Jurvelin which

Nancy Loscheider presented to Affinity Plus in apprecia�on of their $1501.50 dona�on in June. The cashiers

drew three share numbers prior to the sale of shares. When the par�cipant went to purchase that number,

they were told it was free, a gi/ from Affinity Plus. Three shares will be given away each month un�l next

July.

The day was beau�ful, very warm and humid. We received a phone call from the home office telling us the

semi had blown a fuel-line near Moose Lake. They said a replacement semi was on the way and the truck

would be there ASAP. Thanks again to our ladies who prepare the cookies and coffee as the volunteers took

the wai�ng �me to visit with one another and the par�cipants. We are very blessed by our Volunteers!!!

The Blessing Boxes were picked up by the local churches and the cashiers sold the first share about 20

minutes later than usual. Thank You to each and every one of the 68 Volunteers !!

In July of 2012 the number of shares sold was down over 100 from what we had been selling. We were told

that is common in July and August at most sites. The number of shares ordered for July 16th was 425. We

sold 407. That is only 18 less than we have been selling since earlier

this year. Praise the Lord!

As many of you know, we try hard to con�nually improve our distribu�on. A/er looking at the pick-up area

of our distribu�on, a few changes were made. We are elimina�ng using tape and more importantly elimi-

na�ng duplica�on of pick up numbers. Now, the end of the line volunteers are using labels and handing out

colored cards, designed by Carlee Kleno�ch, with the Fruits of the Spirit on them. July's color was lime green

with the fruit of the spirit is love. Without a doubt the members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, who

faithfully volunteer their �me and talents to Ruby's Pantry, are fulfilling the second of the two great com-

mandments and that is " To Love your neighbor as yourself."

• Refocus your vision with God at the center and everything else in increasing distance from Him… Draw this as a map & plot your stressors

Baked Ham & Cheese Sandwiches

2 doz. dollar buns- fill with 1 slice deli ham and Swiss cheese

Put in 2-9x13 cake pans

Cover with foil and refrigerate over night.

Bake covered with foil at 350 for 25 min.

Remove foil and bake another 5 min.

Melt 1 1/2 C. buGer and add:

2 TBSP poppy seeds

1 TBSP worchestershire sauce

2 TBSP mustard

4 TBSP brown sugar(packed)

Mix well and pour over buns

SEWING KITS FOR OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES

In a few short months, members and friends of Our Redeemer, will once again be filling and collecting shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse, to be sent to underprivileged children all around the world.

Over the years, these boxes have been graciously filled with such items as: socks, mittens, stocking caps, tooth-brushes and paste, hair brushes, bar soap and cloths, school supplies, toys, dolls, puzzles, games and hard can-dy. These boxes are a vessel in which the TRUE GIFT is delivered: Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Isn’t it a blessing to be involved in this ministry!!!

It was brought to my attention last year, that the older girls would greatly benefit from receiving SEWING KITS. These kits can make SUCH a DIFFERENCE in the lives of these young women – helping to provide an income for their families and help them to stay off the streets as prostitutes.

There are kits available in department stores, or you can make up your own and put them in a sturdy zippered bag. Suggested items for the kits are:

• sturdy sewing scissors

• 3-6 spools of different colored thread

• small container of straight pins

• safety pins

• flexible tape measure

• needles – can be 2-3 sizes

• seam ripper

• buttons – assorted colors/sizes • needle threader The Quilting Ladies of ORL will be donating material to go along with the sewing kits. If you wish to use their materi-al for your kits, please contact Pam Nagel 326-4968 or Bev Callahan 247-7374 between November 1st and 16th. Col-lection of boxes this year is November 18-25.

From the Kitchen Coordinator……….

Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather we have had lately. Starting September 8,

2013, there will be two services on Sundays. There will be a coffee/fellowship time from 9:30

-11:00. We will be purchasing donuts for this coffee time. I will be putting out a sign-up

sheet for people to host the coffee hour. The responsibilities for the hosts will be to make cof-

fee, set out water, coffee and donuts, and clean up after the coffee hour. Coffee and donuts will be available

except for the last Sunday of each month. The youth will be serving their delicious cinnamon rolls on that

Sunday. Please consider signing up to host these coffee times and enjoy the fellowship with each other. If

ESTHER SISTERS Greetings, As I write this we are eagerly awaiting our afternoon paddle and picnic, so I can’t tell you what an awesome time we all had.

Overview of our meeting on July 8th: • We adopted a Rummage Sale & Bazaar policy to help new coordinators manage the event. • We voted on the responsibilities of the serving groups when assisting with events in the Fellowship Hall as well as

updated the current Fellowship Hall/Kitchen usage policy. This will go to the Board meeting in August for their input and/or approval.

• We disbursed the funds from our rummage sale: $200.00 Tithe to ORL (for the Sound System) $300.00 Faith Comes By Hearing (12 Bible Sticks) $500.00 Pastor Chris & Bethany’s Mission Trip $500.00 Zion Lutheran Church (Finland MN) which burned to the ground $500.00 set aside for ESTHER expenses per the April meeting $2000.00 • Community Involvement: We served a meal for Habitat for Humanity workers in July.

We will be at the Fair on August 16th representing ORL and ORLs various outreach groups, stop by and say hi. • FALL RUMMAGE SALE!!!

September 11 & 12, the proceeds will go to Pastor Chris & Bethany for their mission trip to Tanzania (July 25-Aug 6 2014). Please do not bring your donations to the church before Monday, September 9 due to Rally Sun-day and the festivities associated with that.

we will order the unit for installa�on once we have sufficient pre-sales. Please contact the Church

God Opens Doors

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cohasset, MN, with great enthusiasm, is pleased to host a Volunteer Donor Dinner August 17. The purpose of this dinner is to thank the many people who have and continue to support the Salam Lutheran Ministry, reaching out with the Gospel to Muslim’s who have settled in the Chicago land area, to find and encourage new support for this vital ministry, and to continue to expand spiritual growth through mission education.

On August 17th, we invite you to hear how a door was open to Hicham Chehab (now an ordained LCMS minister of Salam Arabic Fellowship Lutheran Church, Lombard, IL.) that would change his life forever. This event will be a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow partners of the faith, enjoy food from the Middle East and to support the ministry to the Muslim of the Chicago land area. The dinner/program will be enjoyable with special music, testimonials of Mus-lims who have converted to the Christian faith, and Hicham Chehab’s dynamic testimony of how the Word of God changed his life forever. The event will

begin at 4:00 and conclude with dinner by 7:00. Because special food will be cooked by the women of Salam Lutheran Church, Lombard, IL we will need to know how many people will be attending. Ruby's Pantry is in need of Volunteers who can work shorter shifts. We have on average 70 Volunteers each month who are the backbone of our Distribution!! The Food and Drug Administration instituted a new regula-tion that affects our distribution. The food we receive from the warehouse must be either on the pallets or on the table. None can be place on the floor. Not even pop or bottled water. We need a new volunteer position of "Runner." No, that doesn't mean run. It simple means we need a Volunteer for each food item we get to keep the supply on the table for the Volunteer who hands the food to the participant. The Runners would come at 3:30 and stay until 5:30. In July, we were short of Volunteers with this new ruling. As many remember, it was hot and humid. Unfortunately, with the 68 Volunteers we had, we didn't have one to spare. Not even one to relieve those working outside in the heat. (So sorry to those working outside. Thank You for all you do!)
