CALL TO WORSHIP

P: Blessed is He who comes as king!

C: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

P: Hosanna to the Son of David!

C: Hosanna in the highest!

P: Blessed is He who comes as king!

C: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL: JOHN 12:12-16

The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was

coming to Jerusalem. 13

So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet

him, shouting,

"Hosanna!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord--

the King of Israel!"

14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written:

15 "Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion.

Look, your king is coming,

sitting on a donkey's colt!"

16His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glori-

fied, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been

done to him.

SUNDAY OF THE PASSION / PALM SUNDAY

OPENING SONG

TO BE ANNOUNCED

WORDS OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P: We confess the sin of our lips, our minds, and our actions, and we pray for your

forgiveness.

C: God, your will be done.

P: We confess that we have hurt others and participated in the evil of our world.

C: God, your will be done.

P: We confess our apathy and complacency regarding justice and compassion for all

people everywhere.

C: God, your will be done.

P: We confess we make choices that are self-serving.

C: God, your will be done. Forgive us and renew us through the power of your

Holy Spirit. Give us a glimpse of your grace and teach us how your will might

be done in our lives.

P: There is good news for all of God’s people. Jesus Christ has come to save and for-

give. The life, death, and resurrection of Christ is good news for people who cannot

keep God’s commands. In Christ we are forgiven and given God’s new possibilities

for life. Through the power of Christ, sin is destroyed, and God’s will shapes our

lives.

C: Amen

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray;

Almighty God, you sent your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take our flesh upon

him and to suffer death on the cross. Grant that we may share in his obedience to

your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection; through your Son, Jesus

Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever.

C: Amen

CHILDREN’S SONG

TO BE ANNOUNCED

CHILDREN’S SERMON

READING: PHILIPPIANS 2: 5-11

Paul quotes from an early Christian hymn that describes Jesus' death on the cross

as the primary model for Christians of obedience and unselfishness.

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the

form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7but

emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form, 8he humbled himself and became obedient to

the point of death--even death on a cross.

9Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above

every name, 10

so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and

on earth and under the earth, 11

and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is

Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

R: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: MARK 15: 16-39

P: The Gospel according to St. Matthew the 15h Chapter.

C: Glory to you, O Lord.

16Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the gover-

nor's headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. 17

And they clothed

him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on

him. 18

And they began saluting him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19

They struck his head

with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him. 20

After mocking him,

they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led

him out to crucify him.

21

They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his

cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. 22

Then they

Page 6: Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/oursaviourslutheranchurch1/documents/Apr … · Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church 4900 Kinsey Drive Tyler, Texas

brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). 23

And

they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. 24

And they crucified

him, and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should

take.

25

It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. 26

The inscription of

the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews." 27

And with him they crucified

two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. 29

Those who passed by derided

him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and

build it in three days, 30

save yourself, and come down from the cross!" 31

In the same

way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among them-

selves and saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32

Let the Messiah, the

King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe."

Those who were crucified with him also taunted him.

33

When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the after-

noon. 34

At three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema

sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 35

When

some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah." 36

And

someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to

drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down." 37

Then

Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. 38

And the curtain of the temple was torn

in two, from top to bottom. 39

Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw

that in this way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was God's Son!"

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to you, O Christ.

THE CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the

power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under

Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.

On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at

the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the

dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of

saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ever-

lasting. Amen

THE PRAYERS

A: As we mark this Lenten season with repentance and forgiveness, let us pray for the

renewal of the church and the restoration of the world to the life of God.

( A brief silence )

A: For all who have sojourned through Lent, that in this holy week we may look to the

Savior, who entered into suffering and death. Let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

A: For all who witness to the gospel of Christ, that in their proclamation they may bold-

ly confess Christ's obedience to death on a cross for the world's life and salvation.

Let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

A: For those throughout the world who long and work for peace, that they may be sus-

tained by the word of God. Let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

A: For those in distress and those who are sick (especially,) that your face may shine

upon them and that they may receive help and healing from God. Let us pray to

the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

A: As we enter this Holy Week show us anew all that you have done. Strengthen your

church, and lead us onward in faithfulness. Let us pray to the Lord.

THE LORD’S SUPPER

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and

praise.

P: It is right and fitting that at all times and in all places we should give thanks and

praise to you, almighty and everlasting God. Your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord, has

walked the path of humble service, even to a cross. Through His giving He has

gained our salvation. And so with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we

Page 9: Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/oursaviourslutheranchurch1/documents/Apr … · Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church 4900 Kinsey Drive Tyler, Texas

praise your name.

In the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave

thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying; Take and eat; this is my body,

given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the

cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying; This cup is the new covenant in

my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the

remembrance of me.

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy

will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and

forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead

us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and

the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

LENT – 2012

During this Lenten Season we have enjoyed a series of soup suppers followed by a

worship service. During the suppers, we also enjoyed and learned from a special bible

study. We thank every person who brought soup or salad, set up or cleaned up our

Fellowship Hall, led our Bible Study, or organized the different events; you are all

wonderful and we very much appreciate you sharing your gifts with us. We especially

thank our Intern, Cindy, for her hard work in preparing and presenting all of our Lenten

worship sermons.
