Until next time,

Your Principal, Bill Gillespie

Walking home from schoolWe have a few students who are causing us concern about the way they are walking home from school. Some students are playing on the fixed equipment, others are walking up the middle of the driveway and some are walking through the bush rather than using the pathways. Our students have been reminded at assemblies and in the classrooms about going straight home; however, we are asking parents to support us by reinforcing our message by discussing these issues with their children. Please remind them that if you are running late and they are waiting for a while then they are to return to the office so we can contact either yourself or your emergency contact.

Messages for childrenRecently we have been asked to pass on what I would call frivolous messages to students. While we are happy to pass on messages if you are running late or the car has broken down or there has been an emergency, please remember that the school is not a messaging service.

Student achievementCongratulations to our Year 6 boys who competed at the Northern Beaches Basketball Gala Day. The boys were a credit to the school and played very well all day reaching the semi-finals. Well done boys!

Book week paradeHas your child chosen their character yet? What will your child’s teacher wear to the parade? All will be revealed on Wednesday, 26th August!

P&C Working BeeCan you help out on Saturday, 29th August from 1 - 4pm? During the day we will be doing some ground maintenance around the school and will finish the day with a BBQ. I look forward to seeing you there.

Lost propertyWe have a mountain of lost property and none have any names on them. If your child has lost one of the 20 odd jackets or dozen or so hats or other tops please have a look in the clothing pile. All unclaimed clothing will be handed to the Second Hand Clothing shop, this Friday, if it hasn’t been collected.

Art workThank you to everyone who has come to school to collect the art work the children created for the Art Show. This week we will be sending home the remaining pieces of work.

P&C MeetingThe next P&C meeting is next Wednesday, 26th August. We will be meeting in the Staffroom at 7:15pm. I look forward to seeing you there.

... “IF U LIKE ART” CAMP......|......CHLOE POWELL We have some very talented artists at Elanora Heights Public School!

Dylan S (4W) and Ryan T (3S) recently attended one of the Creative Expression art camps at If U Like Art Studio in Brookvale. They learnt new artistic skills and enjoyed meeting students from other schools.

Dylan and Ryan liked the fact that they were given a lot of freedom with their artworks and were able to make completely unique designs. These animal paintings are outstanding! Keep an eye out for more wonderful artworks from the students of Elanora Heights.

... BOOK CHARACTER PARADE..|..Anne-Marie Morrison, Teacher-LibrarianThis parade is for all students K-6 and will be held on Wednesday, 26th August at 9.30am. Costumes are to be made at home and students are asked to wear these to school and remain in them for the whole school day, if comfortable. Those who need to change, if their costume is awkward, may do so at the conclusion of the parade, however I ask that parents assist and then take the student’s costume home.

PARENTS ARE WELCOME.

Students have been reviewing their favourite books during library lessons and will be researching their characters at school and at home to ensure they represent the character well. I have asked all students to choose a character from a book in our school library, in order that others may be motivated to borrow the books their characters represent. Students may need to list the items they need to do the character justice and start preparing now, as it is just over 1 week until this exciting event. There will be Judges and prizes will be awarded for well represented characters in different categories, e.g. the most authentic, colourful, funniest, outrageous, effort etc. Most Children have an idea of the character they would like to be, and it is expected that they will wear a label or hold a sign to let others know who they are representing. For those who need some help, below are some suggested texts with great characters: (you may choose from both lists)

BASKETBALL GALA DAYLast Tuesday at the Northern Beaches Basketball Gala Day an enthusiastic group of boys extended themselves and proved yet again that Elanora Heights students always do their best to achieve and make our school very proud.

All the boys played really well, displaying great teamwork and a lot of heart as all their games were extremely hard fought resulting in very close scores. There was some nail biting moments as one tied game went into overtime and was only lost in the last 20 seconds by one point!

Ky, Angus, Jack, Flynn and Mitch were our main scorers with Jaxson, Michael and Leo using their speed, agility and defensive tactics to steal the ball from the opposition and prevent them scoring which helped get us into the semi-finals.

A big thank you to both Mrs Wachter who managed the team and looked after the boys so well on the day of the event and Ms Zaratsian who trained them at lunch times. The boys really enjoyed themselves and appreciated the support.

... K-4 SING CELTIC CONNECTIONS......|......JENNY CULLENLast Monday, K-4 students enjoyed two separate concerts with visiting Musica Viva trio, Pastance, performing their show “Celtic Connections”. The musicians played a great variety of instruments traditionally used in folk music from the British Isles including harp, bagpipes, fiddle, Baroque guitar, bodhran and an array of recorders.

The preparation done by teachers in class was evident as the students joined in and Pastance complimented Years 3 and 4 particularly on the quality of their singing. 2C and 3S performed simple dances as Pastance played a very old tune, Plethyn Newlyn.

Has your child come home singing? Hopefully, you’ve already heard some of these lilting melodies. If not, see if these songs and the first lines of their choruses help prompt a tune.

Mairie’s wedding – “Step we gaily, on we go, Heel for heel and toe for toe ….”Skye Boat Song – “ Speed bonny boat, like a bird on the wing, onward the sailors cry ….”Serving Maid’s Holiday - “And spindle, bobbin and spool, away, For joy that it’s a holiday!”Wild Mountain Thyme – “And we’ll all go together to pluck wild mountain thyme ….”

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE UPDATE..|..Joanne ArgentIt’s the final week!

LEARN to LEAD.....|.....AMY D (5/6R)On Thursday the 6th of August I did a Learn to Lead activity for Year 1 on the middle oval. My deputies and I did skipping. 20 students turned up and they were evenly split into groups of five. They rotated around in a circle doing different skipping activities including pretzel, normal and backwards skipping, criss-cross and jumping the long rope.

The Year 1’s had 5 minutes at each station which was the perfect amount of time for them.

In the end the Year 1’s said they loved it.

Thank you to all the deputies who helped with skipping.

GREEN WEEK.........|.........Jenny CullenEvery student participated in a stimulating range of activities for Green Week, a fortnight ago, and hopefully came home sharing what they’d learned.

Some of the activities have become annual events such as Year 3 exploring our school grounds and Year 4 walking up to Dewrang Reserve – both with Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre staff. Other activities were new this year. Year 5 enjoyed exploring the geology of Long Reef and Year 6 visited Middle and Deep Creek Reserves to learn about local ecology and human impacts. Year 2 and our compost monitors were abuzz with a session on native bees and made a “bee hotel” to encourage native bees to their gardens.

All of K-2 participated in the environmental art activity, each class creating a large sea creature decorated with the litter that washes to the oceans and to make it 3D, stuffed with ….. plastic! This is too often the reality for our marine creatures with huge numbers dying from swallowing our rubbish. Look out for these creatures soon to be displayed around the school.

A huge thank you to those who offered their voluntary services: naturalist Phil Colman, parent Heidi Hulspas, KP grandfather Ross Fackerell and parents who assisted with K-2 art. Also thank you to Charlotte Reddan and 5/6R who made banners for the final event each grade lined up by a drain around the main playground - holding their cups.

Kaden led with the beat on his drum, accompanied by members of the Intermediate Band. At the drum signal, teachers poured water into the cups at the far end of the line and the children poured into the next cup while chanting “Only Rain Down the Drain” until the last children poured it into the drain. I hope the message sticks for life!

Only rain down the drain!!

.. Whoa, we’re half way thereWhoa, livin’ with a dare. Apologies to Bon Jovi. Surprise, surprise, this week’s lead story is the P&C Voluntary Contribution. And what a week it’s been. We have received some quite overwhelming donations from some families whose generosity is without peer. A massive thank you to them and the 98 families who have very generously contributed $10,358 to the P&C Voluntary Contribution fund, you are leading the way.

So far 26% of families have made a contribution. Teachers have spoken with me where, at other schools where they have taught, the parent participation rate is around the 90% mark. We still have some considerable territory to cover and on behalf of every student at EHPS I urge you to contribute any amount you deem appropriate. There are 282 families who can still make a contribution and at $34 each (65 cents per week or 10 cents per day, surely this is doable!) it would get us to the target and make a significant contribution to the resourcing of our school. Remember, any amount is better than nothing at all.

Contributions in cash are accepted by placing your donation in a clearly marked envelope with your Surname and class(es) in the P&C letterbox outside Mrs Millar’s office.

A copy of the contribution form is included in the newsletter and as Bon Jovi wanted to say, we dare you to make the contribution.

Working BeeAt the last meeting of the P&C it was agreed that the working bee, cancelled last term, will now take place on Saturday, 29th August from 1pm to 4pm. A thank you sausage sizzle will be provided to all who help on the day.

P&C MeetingThe next meeting of the P&C is on Wednesday, 26th August at 7.15pm in the Staffroom. Please email any items you wish to place on the Agenda to [email protected] by 6.30pm this Friday, 21 August. We look forward to seeing you on the night.

NAVY BAND WORKSHOP/CONCERT DAYThis year we are again very fortunate to have the Navy Band coming out to do a workshop and concert with our band students absolutely free of charge. It will be done a little bit differently to last year in that it will be held on a Sunday at Pittwater RSL and we will open the concert (after the workshops) up to the public and charge an admission fee.

Pittwater RSL has very kindly offered us the use of their auditorium for the day and we are hoping that this will turn out to be a great fundraiser for our music program at EHPS. The auditorium can potentially seat 350 people, so we really hope we can get close to that!! You will also be able to eat and drink whilst at the concert, so please come along, bring some friends and make an afternoon of it.

The RAN Band are making posters and flyers up for us to distribute and there will be advertising material that we will share on social media and also via email. This will also be a great opportunity for any Year 2’s (and any other students) who are considering joining our band program next year to go to the afternoon concert so they can be inspired.

If you are able to offer any kind of assistance in the organisational running of the day, please come along to our committee meeting this Thursday night.
