Our 13th Annual General Meeting was held on the 5th August 2012 and it was attended by about 60
members and their families. Des opened the meeting and informed members that he would not be
nominating for the position of President for 2012-2013. He thanked all the Committee Members for
their support over the past 10 years while he was President.
He also urged all members to support our social functions and wished the new Committee every
success in the future. I was elected as President for 2012-2013 and thanked Des and his wife Dimpy
for their dedication and support over the past decade. I would like to welcome Kevin Bellet (class of'
91) as a new Member and Committee Member.
It was agreed by an overwhelming majority that COBA should organise a Re-Union in 2014.
A Sub-Committee would be setup to explore the various options of holding such a function in 2014.
One option was to hold the function out of Melbourne (eg. Phillip Island) similar to the one held in
Goa India in 2011. Members who attended the Goa Re-Union would assist in planning.
I am sorry to report that attendance by Members at our last two dances in June and September
were disappointing. We rely on the profits from these dances to finance our Scholarship and other
programs. I would like suggestions from any member if they think we should
change or implement a new strategy to improve attendances at our functions.
At present several of our Members make annual donations of $50 or more to-
wards our Scholarship Fund. I appeal to all members to consider becoming regu-
lar donors to this fund.
Annually we receive approximately $1200 as donations towards our Scholarship
Program.
From the President

What’s Inside ...
There is a saying that goes – “the only constant in life is change” and yes with COBA we
have had some changes but they are positive ones. We have a new President in Loftus Callanan, a
new Secretary in Jude D’Rozario and a new Co-Editor in Laura Fernandez, welcome. Our many
thanks go to Des and Dymphna Hickman for their outstanding contribution over the years to CO-
BA.
In our last Newsletter I had mentioned that we will have a page dedicated to advertising, this will
commence in 2013, all advertising space will primarily be offered to our members who wish to ad-
vertise their business and thereafter to those associated with members of COBA. For all relevant
details please email me: [email protected]
Finally – Don’t just sit on Facebook or watch TV, work out how you will make this world a better
place. Take genuine steps to make sure you don’t undervalue your contribution to society and to
COBA. May the good Lord walk with you in your journey.

Our Blue and White Dance was held on the 15th of September, It was fantastic especially with the music of “PHOENIX & NO
LIMIT”. I would like to thank the members of the two great bands for their effort in highlighting the event with their music , and my co-MC
for the nite Mr. Kevin Bellet. My thanks goes out to our ever willing committee members who contributed with their hard work in running
this function, and all our patrons, members and their families for their support by coming to our functions and having a
great time. I would like to thank all the members who contributed towards the prizes.
We have tried to put in some changes for making our Christmas cheer function with some meaning. The rea-
son being we are organizing these family oriented functions so that the name of the school “CAMPION” should be main-
tained not forgetting the help that is being generated to the young ones studying at our Alma Mater through our schol-
arship program. The music for the night is provided by Dj DENVER. We look forward to your support and attendance.
Please get your tickets early to avoid missing out on this great event.

There's a fine new documentary called Finding Carlton: Uncovering The Story Of Jazz In India. Made by an American of
Indian descent, Susheel Kurien, it has had showings at the UN, at various universities in the USA, a film festival in Toronto, and other loca-
tions. Some think it could come into Oscar reckoning next time around. You could check it out at the
website www.findingcarlton.com . There's a trailer and other video clips about it, to give you a taster.
The documentary is about the jazz scene in India from the early 1920s, and uses Carlton Kitto, a guitarist
who is the last full-time jazz musician in India today, as the peg to hang its hat on. It includes interviews
and recordings of renowned jazz critics, and many fans, in India and the USA. It hasn't been released for
theatre showings yet, and various regulations prevent it from being put on DVD sale, just yet. However, if
you would like to see the film, please email Susheel at [email protected] and he might be able to
plan a showing for groups in Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta, New York and perhaps elsewhere.
I do hope you will see it one day soon. But, this message is equally about helping Carlton Kitto, the musi-
cian. CK is 70 years old. He is one of the finest jazz guitarists India has ever produced, has performed
continuously for over 50 years and is today the last full-time professional jazz musician in India, working
three nights a week at the Oberoi Grand hotel in Calcutta.
As you will see in the documentary, CK is far far from rich. And his situation grew considerably worse
when, not long ago, he fell off a tram, or perhaps it was a rickshaw, and seriously damaged his back. He
can barely walk, he has lost more than 10 kgs in a few months, and is in great pain all the time. You can
see it in his face, in the attached photographs. Even when playing the guitar, his moving fingers send twinges up his spine.
CK needs a spinal operation that is likely to cost Rs 200,000 (USD 4,000 approx). But he doesn't have the funds for even the diagnostic tests
(for example, an MRI scan) that have to be run in the first instance to determine the scope of the spinal operation. A few of us have started a
Helping Carlton Fund (HCF) under the umbrella of the Gina Forever Foundation (GFF), an organisation set up for such causes - see http://
www.ginaforever.org/
The object of the HCF is to assist Carlton Kitto in his medical costs, including diagnostic tests and/or surgery for the treatment of his spinal
injury. With the help of friends in Calcutta, we will establish what medical procedures need to be done, and get CK to go with them. All funds
collected will be paid directly to the medical institutions' bills, and will not be handed over to any individual, including CK himself.
For convenient handling and processing, all donations will be paid into the Gina Forever Foundation. The GFF will acknowledge all funds
(cheques, or cash) received, in writing, if the donor’s address or email address is provided with the donation. Donors in India of Rs 1,000 and
above may request an Income Tax deduction certificate if they wish, as the GFF has received the relevant Section 80G certificate from the Income Tax authorities. The GFF will send out regular emails to all donors, keeping them informed of the progress with CK's medical treat-
ment as well as the disbursement of their donations.
If you feel you would like to make a contribution (of whatever size you wish, no questions asked) please make it out to the "Gina Forever
Foundation" and mail or hand it over to Stanley Pinto (he is one of two Trustees of the GFF) at the address that appears below this message.
Times is of the essence. Do please give this your attention now.
Thank you very much.

Campion Bows Out . . . .Fr.W.Merrifield sj. Contd.
1965
About this time Campion was visited by Archbishop Knox, Apostolic Internuncio of India. He came to inspect the chapel, which he
had helped to build by his munificent donation. Likewise Bishop Picachy S.J., from Jamshedpur, who later as Archbishop of Calcutta came to
share in the festival of the canonization in 1970 of St. Edmund Campion, Patron of our school.
Before coming to the end of this first period of Fr. Tamby, a brief resume of his externa opera might be recalled. We have noticed
he built a new chapel. He likewise gave the Fathers’ bungalow a face lift on the side facing the Mendonca building. He constructed the pavil-
ion after Fr. Fleming and the NCC building close by and made better sanitary arrangements in the bungalow for the Fathers. He laid down a
good road leading from the gate to the bungalow and planted shady trees on either side. Finally, so as to keep a watchful eye on everything
he moved the office from the bungalow to a room in the ground floor of the De Rozario building. In his six years of administration, he kept
everyone on tip toes and brought out so many changes, not only in buildings but in every department of the school life.
1965…..1969
It is not to be wondered at if we call the next four years of Fr. Mathai’s Headmastership a period of quiet and peace. During the
time the same activities of the boys as started by Fr. Tamby were allowed to go on. But the age of building came to an end. It was almost
complete. But Fr. Mathai repainted the outside of the Chapel with a more permanent coat as well as the De Rozario building. Likewise he
built up the building in the next compound previously bought up by Fr. Koilparambil with the money of the De Rozario fund. Our athletes
under Mr. Dennison’s guidance and Fr. Mathai’s encouragement went on improving themselves winning gold and silver medals in Madras Inter
School sports no less than in Trichy in the District Sports and the Pentangular, i.e. the five schools: Montfort of Yercaud, Stanes of Coimba-
tore, Boiler Plant School of Kailasapuram, Vestry of Trichy and ourselves.
Moreover the results of the Public School exam continued to be in the region of cent per cent. Those four years went past like a
flash and we were all aghast one day to hear we were losing Fr. Mathai who was to go to Guntur Public School as Headmaster. It is not to be
wondered at that Staff and students alike gathered together to bid him farewell. If there were no monumental works attached to his
memory, there was this that he won the respect and love of all the boys, parents and staff. A fuller account of this can be found in Caritas of
July 1969.
The next three years saw Fr. Tamby once again at the head. It was a period of much activity. He built a science lab and invited Mr.
Perumal, Director of School Education to open it. It might be noted here that Mr. Perumal was once a boy of Campion. A few new events
were characteristic of the last period of Fr. Tamby’s period of office. Still much attached to things naval, he took 25 boys of the SCC to Madras to adopt a ship of India’s Navy. It was called “State of Rajasthan” and was a training ship for young cadets. Whenever in future the
ship would come to Madras, Campion boys would be given easy accommodation on the railway to be able to visit the ship of their adoption.
Another new feature was the Christmas tree got up for the benefit of the Staff. Prizes were hung on the decorated tree and were this year
distributed by Archbishop Diraviam. Again Fr. Tamby managed to cap another Naval Officer to cap our young naval hopefuls. A quarter deck
was erected in front of the pavilion on which the officer took the salute of the NCC cadets. At this time Fr. Hession suffering from leukemia
for many years, died in Child Jesus Hospital. You will find an account of this in Caritas of 1970.
In two successive years, first the Archbishop of Madurai then Bishop Fernando of Tiruchi presided over the School Day and gave
away the prizes. What was more significant perhaps was the inviting of Lt. General Noronha, formerly of Golden Rock, and a boy of the old
school, to preside over the School Sports. Needless to say in all these affairs the sports gave place to NCC display. But perhaps the crown-
ing event of these three years was the Tridium of celebrations in honour of the canonization of St. Edmund Campion, Patron of the School.
Caritas of that year has a full description of those days. Another very spectacular day was the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Fr. Merri-
field. Fr. Tamby wanted this to be a day of days and it certainly was. A former Chief Justice of Kerala, an old friend of the school, was invited
as well as Fr. Murphy from Madras. There was a large gathering of local gentry, no less than a goodly number of Old Boys. As Fr. Tamby
noted it was a grand day for which he deserves to be thanked. The school has been like the mustard seed. It has grown from very small be-
ginnings of less than a hundred to a school of over eleven hundred. This increase, though gradual at first, made a leap forward when Fr. Flem-
ing began admitting Indian boys in large numbers and Fr. Koilparambil opened the Boarding House in the new building and started a Nursery.
Subsequent Headmasters further added to their numbers both in the Boarding House and the Nursery department.
And now we come to the finale. The school has been handed back to its owner, the Bishop of Tiruchi. Henceforth it will be under
the Fathers of the diocese with one Jesuit, Fr. Macedo, as its Principal for the present. The rest of the Jesuit Fathers and Brothers will find
other fields of activity in other schools or colleges of Ours. Through them Campion has won a name among the schools in the State second
to none. God bless them. There are many other names of Fathers and Brothers of the Society whose names are not mentioned in this brief
narrative. Lest you should think they have been forgotten, we submit here their illustrious names.
Among our brothers are Bro. Balthazar and Bro. Luke with Bro. Kulandai and Br. I. Joseph. The Fathers, some of whom have
served a second term, are Frs. Theckamury and J. Lourduraj, M. Devasia and G. Maliekal, Chirakal and M. Pulikal, Louisraj and Y.M. Joseph,
John Kunjaparambil and Rodney Hart, Mc Entagart and Alphonse Miranda, Leonard Paul and Macedo, who is left alone to carry the torch to
further triumphs. Let us offer him our prayers and best wishes.
(This narrative of the early days of Campion High School, Trichy, from the time of its inception in 1934 until 1969, was written by Rev. Fr. W. Merrifield,
S.J., shortly before he died in April 1973).
Vol.1 Issue 37 coba news July 2012
Born in 1923 in Tangasseri, one of 8 children to Owen and Millicent Jacobs.
He grew up on the tea estates of South India. At the tender age of 8 he was sent to Campi-
on boarding school. In 1942 at the age of 18 he joined the Air Force as a wireless operator.
After the war at the age of 22 he was taken on as an apprentice Permanent Way
Inspector with the East India Railway. These were fun filled years where he got up to no
good with his brother Alf in tow. His charm and good looks meant he was never without a
dance partner.
At the age of 27 he married our mum, Lona De Clase. They had five children. He
had a brilliant career on the railways and I still remember fondly the huge bungalows, ex-
quisite gardens and legions of servants. Invariably our home became the centre of social
activity with numerous parties and functions.
He could have continued to live very happily in India but he gave it all up to bring his family to Australia. He knew
there was no future for us in India and in 1970 with 5 children we arrived in Australia.
The contrast to his life in India could not have been starker and the enormity of the sacrifice more evident. After 6
months of being in Australia we had a visit from mum’s brother Uncle Errol and Wife Joan. Joan summarised it when she
broke down and cried when she saw Dad making sandwiches for work. “If only you could have seen what a Lord Sahib this man
was in India”.
In 1982 he lost mum. This was a difficult time for us all. His strength and character came to the fore. He was totally
devoted to her and to his family and his resilience and independence become evident. I can continue to tell you the story of
Dad; however, I would rather tell you more of the Man than the journey.
Firstly I would like to share with you Victor, as a father. My dad lived with the principle of “Peace at all cost” this
meant he never accused, never blamed, never pointed the finger and always sort to build bridges between his children. He
took an avid interest in all our successes and failures, always encouraged and supported. For every exam, job interview trial or
tribulation, there were Novenas, and prays galore. Julia Gillard would be pleased that Dad has gone, far less candles creating
carbon, have now been extinguished.
Now Dad as a Grandfather: As you have heard from Natalie. Dad played an integral role in their lives. With stories,
support and most importantly with love. He dotted on his grandchildren and without fail, every birthday arrived a birthday
card with the mandatory cheque.
Dad as a friend: This role Dad played with great gusto. Just look around you, he has touched so many lives. His gen-
uine interest in people, his generosity, he always gave freely of himself. I have failed to mention his sixth child, not by any wild
dalliance, but by his giving sprit. He adopted “Kumar”, who came to us, alone from India to this country. Dad welcomed him
into his home and our family and they happily shared the house in Sunshine for nearly 10 years.
The character of the man: When interviewed the actor Paul Eddington of Yes Minister fame, who was then gravely ill,
was asked what would be his epitaph. His reply was “that he did no harm”. He claimed this with no false modesty.
With all pride I can honestly say that my Father was also a great man that caused no harm.
I struggled on how to conclude this eulogy of a great man but thanks to brother Kumar, he gave me the most appropriate con-
clusion:
In Kumar’s words Dad was a true Yogi – a yogi is one who measures what he says, and how he says it. Measures what he eats,
measures what he does, and measures how he conducts himself.
Dad you go with the love and respect of your family and legions of friends.
Eulogy for Victor Jacobs
