Herman will share some of his memories and the experiences he and his younger brother encountered as young boys in Java during wartime.

All men are welcome to join a group from St. Matthew’s as

we invest in our relationship with our Heavenly Father,

build relationships with our brothers-in-Christ, slow down,

be refreshed and inspired and return home better equipped

to serve.

For anyone who was unable to attend in the past due to

distance and the longer conference, this is a good

opportunity to attend a shorter version closer to home.

we have to Dig Deep

When I was a child my family would go on holidays to a property at Sofala, it was such fun and the whole

family loved these holidays. We would go gold prospecting in the Turon River, unfortunately I always managed to get those terrible leeches on me, but there were so many good times this was not a problem. My

father would scoop a shovelful of mud from the bottom of the river, water would flood the dish that he was placing the mud in, the water washed away grains of sand and there were dead leaves and twigs floating

to the surface. My father cleaned out the debris and little rocks and pebbles and scoured the bottom of the dish for precious flakes of gold, which remarkably he

often found. When my memory goes back to these wonderful times I realise we are like soil from the

river bottom, worth something but also filled with debris. But when we dig into and apply God’s Word to everyday Circumstances, the Lord filters from our lives what is useless. We seek and God helps us discover treasure in the Bible. As Scripture permeates our hearts and minds, it cleanses us of destructive attitudes. Ephesians 4:31-32 tells us how to deal with bitterness and anger. Philippians 4:6 helps us confront anxious thoughts. The Bible offers solutions for attitudes that block us from becoming the people God created us to be. As we live the truth from God’s Word, our lives can shine with substance and lasting value. CHRISTIAN

MEDITATION

You are invited to come along to the church on

Tuesdays at 9.15am The group will give you (us) a chance to centre and locate

ourselves in God’s presence, an opportunity to leave behind our often hectic lifestyle and simply ‘be’.

All are welcome to come and learn about this way of prayer.

‘The all important aim of Christian meditation is to allow God’s mysterious presence within to become more and more not only

a reality, but the reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to everything we do, to everything we are.

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION

‘”It is as though the mystery of God is a wonderful multi-faceted

diamond. When we talk about God or we think about God, it is as though

we are responding to one or other of his facets. But when we are silent in

his presence, we respond to the mystery which we call God as a whole,

and that, Omni-dimensionally. “

At the very heart of the ecumenical movement is the reality of prayer.

Jesus prayed that we may all be one, united in God in the mystery of the Trinity. That is the

basis and the goal of our search for unity.

Penguin Uniting Church weaving stars to end violence

One million woven stars will hang at the 2018 Commonwealth games, representing light, courage and solidarity to end all forms of violence.

Among them will be 10,000 handmade and sent North from the Coast of Tasmania. The Penguin Uniting Church has registered to contribute the stars and is looking for more weavers and sponsors for the purchase of ribbons.

The project began following the 2012 rape and murder of Victorian woman Jill Meagher, and has since grown into an international show of solidarity.

Organiser Jeanne Koetsier said the activity is ideal for individuals, community groups or schools.

“It’s a great way to start conversations about violence,” she said.

“People find it easier to talk about while they’re doing

something else, like weaving the stars.”

The uniting church is the only group in Tasmania that

has registered to contribute.

Ribbon for 200 stars costs about $20. Interested schools, groups or

sponsors should contact Ms Koetsier on 0488 241 818.
