HAPPY NEW YEAR. Welcome to 2013. I trust that you have all had a good break and are raring to go. Last year saw us regaining the ladies TT league, placing well in the men’s league and enjoying numerous podium finishes. Well I believe we are in for an even better 2013, and I look forward to seeing the results week after week. This year we have the incentive of finding our fastest half marathoner and marathoner in both the ladies and men’s section. If you are running an event out of town, please notify us of your results ASAP afterwards so that we can capture these as well. In addition to this we will also be introducing the Westville Incentive League, which will involve a number of events —more details will be forthcoming soon. Then as per normal we have the King & Queen of the mountains and the various club champ events. We look forward to seeing as many of you participating in these as pos- sible. For renewing your license we will be open on Saturday the 12 January 2013, from 9am—1pm, alternatively you can go to the website and download the form and pay via EFT. According to KZNA the license numbers will be late so you will be permitted to run in with your 2012 license until 31 January 2013. As soon as we receive the new licenses we will notify you to collect. Westville kit will be available on a Tuesday evening and we encourage you to also pur- chase our tracksuit and baggies. Stage 5. The Runner - The Best of All Stages

soon as possible.

As a runner you experience the enjoyment of each stage and retain the best of each of them. You can relive the beginner’s excitement in discovery, appreciate the jogger’s balance of fitness and enthusiasm, share the competitor’s ambition, and internalize the athlete’s quest. Having consolidated and balanced all these stages, you appreciate the creative and positive aspects of each and let them enrich your run-ning life. “

The final stage of the running journey blends the best elements of all the pre-vious stages. The runner balances the elements of fitness, competition, train-ing and social life and blends running with the rest of his or her life. There may be times when the runner reverts to earlier stages — mature people in any field have this problem — but these are only passing bouts that are assimi-lated into the overall harmony. The run-ner is a happy person.

As a runner, the primary focus of your life is not running. It may be family, friends, work, and is often a blend of many things. Running is now a natural part of your daily program — as is eat-ing, sleeping or talking. You know you’ll get in that daily run although you may not know when. When you do miss a run you aren’t in agony. In fact, you don’t miss many days over the span of a year.

If scientists announced tomorrow that running was harmful, you’d read the news with interest and go out on your daily run. You know about the positive effects of exercise, but that alone doesn’t get you out on the roads. You get so much satisfaction from the expe-rience itself that running has become a necessary and stable part of your ac-tive lifestyle.

As a runner, you’ll enjoy the compan-ionship of running with others, but most of your running will be done alone. You appreciate the peace and inner reflec-tion provided by the solitary run more than you did in the earlier stages.

Great satisfaction comes from being able to mould your body into form, and there is an art in combining just the right amounts of strength, endurance, form and performance training. A race can be the opportunity to pull out deep hidden strengths. Once you’ve learned these things, the joy lies not in the race, but in the running.

Even though you may plan for occa-sional competition with the same care as a competitor, there is none of that fixated intensity. The race isn’t sacred. If stresses or problems arise there are always other races.

Occasionally the runner is injured. This is usually due to reverting to one of the earlier stages in a workout or race. Now — through experience — you’ll know the difference between a common ache and a problem and you’ll back off at the first sign of the latter. You’ll sacrifice workouts, races and time goals to heal an injury early and get back to 100% as

WESTVILLE INCENTIVE LEAGUE 2013

Westville Athletic Club Committee is proud to announce the Westville Athletic Club Incentive League. The purpose of creating this league is:

To encourage members to increase their participation at Road Races, Time Trials and Cross Country events.

To reward members who are consistently participating in this league through quantitative points system, which will also be presented at the Annual Awards evening.

To grow our presence in KZN at all three of these events.

Members may earn points in the following way:

Members are awarded points for attending selected events during the year. Members are required to attend a minimum number of events across all categories in order to earn the corresponding attendance awards.

A minimum of:-

4 x Road Races (from the selected races) – 20 points per road race you complete within the cut-off time

4 x Time Trial League events – 40 points per event you participate in

3 x Cross Country events – 40 points per event you participate in

Rules for participating:

You are required to participate in the minimum number of events as specified.

It is the duty of the member to ensure his/her attendance and time is captured at road races by going to the club tent after finishing the event.

Failure to do so will result in those points not being allocated. If the club tent is not present at the event, it is up to the member to email their results to the committee by the end of the Monday after the race.

Prizes:

R1000 to first man and woman at the end of the League.

R750 to the second man and woman at the end of the League.

R500 to the third man and woman at the end of the League.

RACES:-

A list of the qualifying events will be placed in the newsletter next week. Keep an eye out for it and good luck to all.

On the light side:

Following the tragic death of the Human Cannonball at the Kent Show, a spokesman

said "We'll struggle to get another man of the same calibre."

Just been to the gym. They've got a new machine in. Only used it for half an hour as I

started to feel sick. It's great though. It does everything - Kit Kats, Mars Bars, Snickers,

Crisps, the lot.."

I thought the wife would be the ideal candidate for a new TV show. Turns out I got it all

wrong and the program's called Fact Hunt.

Happy birthday

Happy birthday to all our

members who are having

a birthday this week. We

hope you are spoilt rotten.
