OUT OF MY MIND Tim Hughes, Senior Minister

We are in the middle of an all-church study entitled Life on Mission. This study is reminding us, or maybe challenging us for the first time to reach out to others who do not know Christ. I’ve been hearing a lot of positive comments and yet I know that for most Christians the idea of sharing our faith is filled with fear that we may bungle our opportunities and accidently turn someone off from any interest they may have in Christ. We are often overly conscious of coming on too strong and so we tend to shy away from encounters with non-believers. However, we should not fear since the Bible tells us that God will be with us and will help us in those moments when we feel most vulnerable. In recent times much of evangelism has been relegated to something more like good works and acts of love directed toward those who don’t know Christ. Sometimes we get the impression that we will never have to say a word, that somehow our actions will do all the talking for us. Well, our actions do a lot of talking, that’s for certain but we also need to speak of the gospel as well.

In his book The Best Kept Secret of Christian Mission, John Dickson writes about his introduction to the Christian faith:

“Under God, my own conversion was the result of one person's willingness to embody the mission of the “friend of sinners.” … One of the relics of Australia's Christian heritage is the once-a-week Scripture lesson offered in many state high schools around the country. … One of these Scripture teachers—Glenda was her name—had the courage to invite [my] entire class to her home for discussions about God. The invitation

would have gone unnoticed, except that she added: “If anyone gets hungry I'll be making hamburgers, milkshakes, and scones.” … As I looked around the room at all my friends—all skeptics like me—I was amazed that this woman would open her home (and kitchen) to us. Some of the lads were among the worst “sinners” in our school: one was a drug user (and seller), one was a class clown and bully, and one was a petty thief with a string of [breaking-and-entering charges] to his credit.

“I could not figure Brenda out. She was wealthy and intelligent. She had an exciting social life married to a leading Australian businessman. What was she thinking inviting us for a meal and discussion? At no point was this teacher pushy or preachy. Her style was completely relaxed and incredibly generous. When her VCR went missing one day, she made almost nothing of it, even though she suspected (quite reasonably) it was [someone from] our group. For me, her open, flexible, generous attitude toward us “sinners” was the doorway into a life of faith. As we ate and drank and talked, it was clear this was no missionary ploy on her part. She truly cared for us and treated us like friends or, perhaps more accurately, like sons. As a result, over the course of the next year, she introduced several of us from the class to the ultimate “friend of sinners,” Jesus.”

Hopefully this book excerpt will be of some encouragement to all of us. You and I certainly won’t have the kind of specific opportunity this person describes but we have our own unique opportunities that come along and God has beautifully equipped us for those moments.

Senior Adult Ministry Report For the month of September, 30 of us went to Louisville and cruised on the Belle of Louisville. Their lunch buffet was

well prepared and plentiful. The trip down the river was really enjoyable. For the month of October, we are going to step back into history. We will be visiting the homes of James Whitcomb

Riley and Benjamin Harrison. We will leave the church at 9:15 to arrive at the James Whitcomb Riley Museum for a 10:00 tour. The admission charge is $4 each. Our arrival time for the Benjamin Harrison Museum is 1:00 pm. The cost is $8 each. They do have an elevator between floors, but there are 4 or 5 steps into the building. The tour will be divided into 2 groups and will last about an hour. We will pick a place to eat down town between the two museum visits. We should be back at Cornerstone around 3:00 pm.

Camp Allendale

Randy sent me an update on their Capital Campaign. Sewage Expansion: The contractor is doing their final “punch list”; mostly landscaping and reseeding remains. The system has functioned well this summer, with no issues! Finally, secondary projects (i.e. manhole restoration, sewer line replacement) to be completed this fall. Beach Bath House: The interior is 100% complete; landscaping around the building to be completed this fall and the exterior painting has been completed. New Hillside Mini-Lodge: Cana Cabin and Fair Haven Cabin (old ones) removed to prepare site for new lodge. Floor plan has been finalized with construction to begin by late fall; with the goal of completion by April 2015. Unless Campaign: The pledges now total $392,400. They still have a ways to go for the $1,000,000 goal. If you have not had a chance to participate in this project, just write your check and send it to Camp Allendale.

Way to go Men! We had 12 men attend the Capital District Christian Men’s Fellowship; the total attendance was 89 men representing 11 churches. The general offering was $747. Chapel Rock Christian Church took home the attendance trophy and Cornerstone Christian Church brought home the mileage trophy.

Randy said they have been very busy since camp closed. They have already had 35 groups use the facility; 2,000 people have attended. Between now and Christmas they will have 50 other groups use the facility; they project 3,000 to attend. Four colleges have used the facility to train their RA’s.

Randy went on to say that the Schedule for 2015 has been set. Program directors are in place for the 2015 camp season as well. The theme for 2015 is “Worship.” They are working on some special programs for the 1st week of camp for High School campers.

Next month we travel to Connection Pointe Christian Church. Circle Monday, October 20 on your calendar and plan on going with us. Terry Crist from Church at Mount Gilead will be our speaker. We will not be taking the bus. We sit down to eat at 6:00. Men plan on bringing you sons and grandsons; they are the future of CDCMF.

Church Administrator David Keith

The Good Fight

The front of the book by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrot says, “The Good Fight; How Conflict Can Bring You Closer. How is that possible? Don’t we often experience a conflict worsening our relationships? Isn’t that why we often times avoid conflict? That is precisely why this study on four consecutive Thursday nights will help those of us who are in relationships with others. The Good Fight will help you turn the most painful moments of your marriage into milestones that mark a deeper joy and a greater passion for each other. Those of you who took the Love Talk video class are already familiar with Drs. Les and Leslie Parrot who wrote and produced this material.

This class will be offered beginning Thursday, October 30 at 7 pm in room 212. There is a book and workbook to purchase and some of the class material is presented by way of DVD. Sign up on the Sunday program tear-off and indicate if you need childcare.

Connecting to Cornerstone Teachers: Chas LaPierre, Alyson Lurker A new class will be announced. This class will include the elements of fellowship, Bible exploration, and discussion. The focus will be on what God has said to us in the Bible and how we can take action on that truth in today’s world. Anyone may attend this new class; however, the class is designed for those who are new to Cornerstone. This class could help you develop the faith you desire, invigorate a faith you already have, or define how you want to grow and serve. You may join this class at any time. Each of the ten sessions is self-contained. The sessions will be repeated throughout the year, so, if you miss a session, you can pick it up the next time the series is presented.

Home Builders Teachers: Kevin Bayless, Scott Curtis, Tom Dillow The Family Project Whether we have toddlers, teenagers, or an empty nest, we are all part of a family. Families can be a source of joy, love, and encouragement, but they can also be a source of frustration and disappointment. Join us this quarter as we learn how God uses the family to reveal His character and develop practical ways to help our families thrive for current and future generations.

Pathfinders Teacher: Scott Keller Life Principles Continued We will continue with the study on Life Principles and watch a video series by Ray Vander Laan entitled “With all your heart.”

New Generation Leaders Teacher: Justin Spears Defending the Church The modern church is under attack. We will analyze the sources and criticisms of church theology and the role of the church in modern society. Some topics will include discipleship, worship, fellowship, political discourse and

family resource. Please note: The first week of this quarter will actually be taught on 9/28, 10/5 will be the brunch date.

Halas Teachers: Steve Matthews, Jim Harter The Many and Various Names of Jesus The scriptures, both Old Testament and New Testament, use many different names and references to identify and name the person and work of Jesus. He is the Word, Light of the World, Messiah, Savior, Bread of Life, and many more. This quarter’s study will be to look at and study some 50 different names used to refer to the person and mission of Jesus, the Christ, and Redeemer, and the background and context of those various names. The many and various names for Jesus give us a deeper insight and understanding of His work on earth.

Philia Teacher: Bill Estes Old Testament on Location The stories of the Old Testament can take on new meaning and significance when viewed within the setting of the lands and the cultures of biblical times. Join us this quarter as we view two video series shot on location in the lands of the Old Testament. The first series will walk us through the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In the second series, host Ray VanderLaan explores the turbulent history of Israel’s Prophets and Kings. Each week we will follow up the video with a discussion of how we can learn from these events to further our trust in God’s wisdom and guidance.

Sonrise Teachers: Dave Blanford, Walt Brown Looking Closely at Jesus We’re going to examine who Jesus was, why He came, and what He left behind. We’ll gain understanding about His humanity and dig deeply into His divinity. We’ll try to come away with a greater appreciation of why staking everything on His resurrection is such a profoundly wise decision.
