Lifestyle Adjustments to Lower Your Risk of Cancer

Cancer is the world’s leading cause of death but 1 in 3 cases can be prevented, according to the World

Health Organization. There is no “magic pill” but we can do some things to improve our odds:

-Stay at a Healthy Weight-nearly 70% of Americans are overweight. Dropping even a few pounds can

lower your risk of cancer and other diseases.

-Eat Less Red Meat-Along with cured meats like bacon, hotdogs and lunch meats, red meat in diets has

been linked to higher risks of colon and stomach cancers. The American Institute for Cancer Research

recommends no more than 18 ounces of red meat per week.

-Wear Sunscreen with SPF 30 or Higher-Ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer, which is the most

common type in the U.S.

-Eat More Vegetables-Vegetables and fruits can help stave off cancer; the recommended daily amount

is 2.5 cups. The ingredients in these foods help prevent cell damage that may lead to cancer later.

-Don’t Count on Supplements-When it comes to lowering your cancer risk, a diet rich in vegetables,

fruits and whole grains is a better bet than nutritional supplements. Supplements do not provide the

same benefits as whole foods and they can throw off the balance of other nutrients in your system.

-Cut Down on Sugar-Foods and drinks with a lot of sugar tend to have more calories per ounce. You do

not need to skip sugar entirely but limit your consumption and keep an eye out for foods and drinks

with added sweeteners.

Exercise-Get off the Couch-Exercise is especially helpful in preventing breast, colon and uterine can-

cers. When you are up and moving, your body uses more energy, digests food faster and prevents

buildup of some hormones that are linked to cancer. It is also helpful in preventing other conditions like

diabetes and heart disease.

-Avoid Smoking-Though the number of Americans who smoke regularly has dropped dramatically in

recent years, tobacco use is still the #1 cause of preventable death in the U.S.

-Limit Alcohol-Too much alcohol raises the risk of digestive system cancers as well as breast and throat

cancers. It can damage tissue and mix with other body chemicals to harm cells. The recommended limit

is one drink per day.

-Get Screened-The sooner the warning signs

of cancer are spotted, the better your odds of

recovery. Early detection is a key factor in

beating cancer once it is diagnosed. Ask your

doctor which screenings you should get and

when.
