All metals react with oxygen in the airto form a film of oxide on thesurface. With ordinary mild steel,
oxidation continues resulting in corrosion orrust. Stainless steel, on the other hand,contains more than 11% chromium and thisis sufficient to modify the characteristics ofthe oxide film, preventing further oxidation.
A REPUTATION FOR DURABILITYNot all stainless steels are created equal. Thereare many different grades, each with differentchemical properties, performance features,end-use applications, and costs. While Type 430is normal for indoor applications, at Bobrick weuse Type 304, a higher grade often used foroutdoor applications such as curtain walling orroofing because its composition includes 18%chromium and 8% nickel. This makes ourproducts more durable and longer lasting,lowers the building owner’s cost of maintenanceand replacement, generating significant savingsover the building’s life cycle.
