From the moment you decide you would like a wood floor, we know it can be overwhelming to narrow down your choices. So to help you out, we’ve created this quick-read guide to finding the right floor for your home.

1. Think of the size and shape of your room first, and tone later. Small rooms or unusual layouts may benefit from different formats like herringbone or chevron, so work out which format will really suit your space. The right format will make a big difference.

2. If you are looking at planks, think about what width would suit your space. Wider boards look better in bigger rooms, try not to use really wide boards in small spaces as this will make your space feel smaller. Really narrow planks can work wonders in making a small space feel bigger.

3. Durability and lifespan always need to be taken into consideration. Our wood floors will outlast all man-made alternatives as they can easily be renovated - so if you plan on being in your home for many years, it’s worth investing in the best floor you can afford.

4. Consider a feature floor. Patterns create a statement, while stand-out tones and colours inject personality into your room. Let the floor do the talking, so that it sits confidently alongside other decorative items.

5. Tone is important, but it should be the last thing you look at. Once you have chosen a format that will work in your home - including the direction it should run in - you can then turn your attention to colour.

6. Using an experienced installer who is familiar with our floors is important. Our floors are a natural product, and know-how makes a very big difference. To ensure the best results, we recommend you buy your floor as part of a supply and fit package from one of our approved partners or showrooms.

The trend for using wood on both horizontal and vertical surfaces continues to grow - it seems you can’t have too much of a good thing. The key is to mix up different textures, tones, patterns and finishes to create a striking, ultra-modern look. Here we’ve used Pallene from our Patterns & Panels Collection, while the raised pattern of the Woodworks Walnut wall cladding adds to the eclectic look. Use calm grey on the walls to balance the overall look.

Design tip — start with wood cladding in a cloakroom, creating an atmospheric space using skinny vertical planks in dark wood, or horizontal planks in a paler tone.

This 15mm pattern system really comes into its own when you not only use the planks, herringbone, chevron or squares on their own, but when you combine them together using our unique pattern system.

Where Create® becomes totally unique is when you want to combine these formats together. All of the formats have been designed to combine, so you can design patterns using 4 formats and 10 tones.

Create is made with 15mm thick European Oak. It is made of 100% Oak and this gives superior stability, which is crucial for precision made patterns.

PLANKTaking inspiration from traditional floors, our planks range from narrow widths (80mm), to traditional floorboard widths (140mm) and wide planks (180 to 220mm), making planks incredibly versatile. For wider planks, please look to our Woodworks Collections.

Design tip — Lay on the diagonal for a contemporary spin or lay in a mixture of widths for a traditional feel.

SQUARESOur squares are an unusual format for a wood floor. Mix with planks, chevron or herringbone in our Create® Collection. Lay on their own for a statement look.

Design tip — mix with other Create® elements in small spaces, or mix two tones and lay on the diagonal in your entrance hall.

CHEVRONSometimes confused with herringbone, chevron is angled at 45 or 33 degrees for a strong, statement look. This gives chevron its own very unique appearance as all of the elements line up in a strong pattern.

Design tip — Chevron floors work best in square or rectangular spaces. Use our Create® tool to lay a plank in between each run of chevron for a stunning, statement look.

HERRINGBONEHerringbone, or parquet as it is also known, is increasingly on-trend. Made of individual elements arranged into a variety of designs, herringbone has a strong design impact and works well in all interior styles.

Design tip — Choose herringbone for irregularly shaped interiors to make your space flow really well. Mix it up by designing some rooms in plank, and some in herringbone.

CLADDINGOur stunning wood floors don’t just look good on the floor. For a statement look, use them on walls, ceilings, doors and furniture. Installation is just as easy as standard floors.

HARDENEDOILHardened oil is an oil based finish. It has a natural look with a subtle sheen. The outer layer is hardened to give added wear and water resistance making it easy to maintain.

Look after your floor with Care System 1.

BURNISHED HARDWAX OILThis finish is durable, natural and unrivalled. It combines oils which deeply penetrate into the wood’s pores with a hardwax that is polished to a deep patina.


NAKED SKINLACQUERThis clear, soft-feel lacquer maintains the original ‘unfinished’ look of natural wood, while providing high levels of durability.


RESTORATION OILA truly organic, oiled finish that provides a deep lustre to your floor. The benefit of this finish is that it can easily be restored with Oil Replenish. Oil Replenish is easy to apply and quick to dry.


UNFINISHEDFLOORSWe supply some of our floors unfinished - so you can decide which finish is best for you. The finish will be applied in-situ. The Care System required will depend on the finish you choose.

ENGINEEREDOur engineered floors are made from layered sections of solid wood. Each layer runs in a different direction to ensure durability and stability, reducing the wood's natural tendency to expand and contract. This makes it the perfect partner for underfloor heating, older homes and rooms below ground level. The top layer of an engineered board is known as the wear layer and ranges from 4mm to 6mm. Wood floors can be sanded and resealed and so the thicker the wear layer, the more often you can do this.

SOLIDSolid floors are the more traditional choice and unlike our engineered options they are simply made from a single layer of wood. Due to its single layer construction, solid wood is durable, but because of its natural tendency to expand and contract it is not suitable for use with underfloor heating. Solid wood floors can be sanded and resealed many times because the wear layer above the tongue is 8mm. When taken care of with our Floor Care Systems, our solid wood floors will last a life time.
