Dear Friends,Richard Keefer was born in the
charming town of Wellsboro,Pennsylvania on July 11, 1939.His mother was a nurse and hisfather an engineer. Richard wasten years old when his brotherRobert arrived. Now, ten year oldboys may not be interested in anew baby brother, but Richardwas thrilled! When Richard was18, the Vietnam War was on thehorizon. His father advised him tojoin the Air National Guard. Thenext 6 years was spent as a POLman; he ensured the planes hadfuel and oil.
When Richard was 21, he wentrollerskating and met a girl namedRose, whom he married. They hadtwo children; Kelly, who is anurse, and Michael, who obtaineda degree in finance and art. Sadly, the marriage ended after 13 years. He had a group of friends, single, whom Richard refers to as apartying crew. One of the crewhosted a party. It turns out awoman named Barbara, a schoolteacher, crashed the party! Richardsaw the hostess look at the partycrasher questioningly and hejumped up and introducedhimself to the party crasher. Theyquickly became a couple, marriedtwo years later, and movedto Chicago.
Kelly, who wanted to be a nurse
like her grandmother, decided togo to Elmhurst College. So Kellymoved in with Barbara andRichard. Then Michael wished tobe close to his sister and hedecided to attend ElmhurstCollege as well. Interestingly,Richard also went back to schooland graduated from ElmhurstCollege at age 41 with a degreein business.
One of Richard’s favoritememories were Christmasholidays; the kids waking up at2:00 a.m., ready to open presentsand trying to get them back to bedagain. Kelly remembers her fatheras being practical, rational, and ofcourse, a loving father. However, the practical part could get a littleyucky. One time, Richard, Kellyand Michael were eating pizza andRichard felt the pizza neededmore sauce. To Kelly’s dismay, hereasygoing father simply addedketchup!

Continued From FrontCover Story:
Richard is a history buff andtook the kids on trips to theNational Parks. Kelly said thathistory was her favorite subject, thanks to her Dad. Richard sharedhistory about his family thatextends to the Civil War atGettysburg. He fondlyremembered an aunt, last nameHollingsworth, that convincedRichard as a young child that thegovernment owed them moneyfor land utilized during the warand they would be very wealthy. He wryly comments that he isstill waiting.
Richard is very proud of his twochildren; he shakes his head inamazement at his son Michael’sartistic ability and Kelly’s passionfor nursing. Richard is devoted tohis wife Barbara who lives withhim at Belmont Village. Richardhas an amazing memory; he
paints an accurate picture of daysgone by. You can tell that as ayoung child he listened intently tohis grandparents’, aunt’s anduncle’s stories because he takes thelistener with him as he recountstheir tales. During ourconversation, Richard said that hisfather taught him a man’s wordwas everything. Richard was veryproud of his father, and hasalways tried to live up to thatmotto.
Happy Father’s Day, Richard, and to all the wonderful fathers!
