Generally, I am on vacation for the first week of August with my daughters. We have traveled all over the country, and we always take a beach vacation at some point during the year. Whether it be in Florida, Maryland, California, North Carolina or Cape Cod, we love the ocean and our beach vacations. We have never missed a beach vacation since the girls were born. Like everyone, I always look forward to our vacations and the time we spend together as a family. I am so fortunate for my time with my daughters. This year is different as we are preparing to send Jenna off to college. Now, we did have an amazing vacation in the spring, so we cannot complain. But I just could not manage another trip this summer (although I still may fit in a few days somewhere local in August). The summer is flying by, and there are few weekends left before we have to drive her to school. Instead of traveling, we are having fun shopping and planning for college. That is more fun for me than Jenna since I love to shop and she doesn’t, but it is wonderful to see how excited she is about college. Everything for me is tinged with a bit of sadness. How many more trips will we all be able to take together as summers become filled with work, internships and travels with friends? What will happen if she settles away from Chicago after graduation? And...who will I watch Game of Thrones with next year? I want to slow down time. I want to take back our encouragement to go to school far away from home. I want to know that she will always live near me. I can’t imagine what it will be like next year when she is gone and how much I will miss her every day. It is a very bittersweet time. Enjoy the rest of summer. I wish you days filled with sunshine, joy, love and laughter! “When I look back now, that summer seemed to last forever; and if I had the choice...yeah, I’d always be there. Those were the best days of my life.”

Physical Activity for Older AdultsMany people decrease their

exercise as they age but continuingto exercise has definite benefits forolder people. Being fit isimportant to everyone. Flexibilityand stretching, which helpprovide a full range of motion formuscles and joints, can help youfunction better. Everyday tasksthat are difficult, such as gettingup, walking, tying shoelaces orreaching to a shelf may becomeeasier. When you stay flexible, youalso keep a more natural walkingpattern and decrease your chanceof falling. Most flexibility that isseemingly lost through aging iscaused not only by aging but alsoby inactivity or lack of movement.Aerobic exercise strengthens theheart and reduces the risk ofcoronary artery disease. It can alsoincrease the amount of sleep youget at night and may reduce thetime it takes to fall asleep.

Strengthening exercises canhelp you maintain your muscle, strengthen bones, and protectknees and other joints. Theseexercises may include, resistancetraining, such as lifting weights, and weight bearing such aswalking, jogging or dancing.

Your physical activity does nothave to be strenuous. Older adultscan gain significant healthbenefits with a moderate amountof physical activity. This can bedone in longer sessions ofmoderately intense activities suchas walking or in shorter sessions

of more vigorous activities such asfast walking or stair walking. Youcan benefit from physical activityeven if you think of yourself aselderly or you already have oldage conditions such asosteoarthritis or heart disease.Being more active may improveyour quality of life and canprevent or delay disability.

It is advisable to talk to yourdoctor before starting a fitnessprogram. You may have healthproblems that limit what youcan do.

At Belmont Village we have aPhysical Fitness Program availablefor all residents with consentsfrom their doctor. The program iscoordinated by a personal trainer. The Sit and Be Fit Exercise groupalso meet Monday through Fridayat the Town Hall. We also haveseveral exercise equipmentavailable at the Center for LifeEnhancement for the residents touse when supervised by a personaltrainer.

Remember When:Drive-In Movies

Premiering in 1933, drive-inmovie theaters grew inpopularity, hitting their peak inthe 1950s and capitalizing onAmerica’s love for theautomobile. From families withpajama-clad children to coupleson a date night, carloads of folkstook in big-screen features fromthe comfort of their ownvehicles—both in them and ontop of them. Since admissionwas often charged per person, some patrons took to hidingpassengers in their car trunks.
